Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Came Back

The door handle stopped moving.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

For a moment, I thought the person outside had left.

Then the handle moved again.

Slowly.

Like whoever was standing there wanted us to know they were waiting.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

It was a small movement.

Almost invisible.

But I noticed.

He wasn't protecting himself.

He was protecting me.

Margaret grabbed the edge of the desk.

"Eleanor..."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Get away from the door."

I looked at her.

"You know who it is."

She didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

The handle moved one more time.

Then a voice came from the other side.

"Eleanor?"

My blood went cold.

Because I knew that voice.

It was David.

I looked at Daniel.

His expression hardened.

"He followed us."

I shook my head.

"How?"

Daniel looked at the hidden camera on the shelf.

"Because he never stopped watching."

My phone vibrated.

Another message from David.

I didn't open it.

I didn't need to.

I already knew.

He wanted me afraid.

He wanted me to feel like I was trapped.

Like every move I made belonged to him.

But something had changed.

A few hours earlier, I had been a wife trying to understand why her husband betrayed her.

Now I was someone who finally understood what kind of person I had married.

I wasn't scared of him anymore.

Daniel slowly walked toward the door.

"Stay behind me."

I grabbed his arm.

"No."

He looked at me.

"This is my life too."

For a second, he didn't say anything.

Then he nodded.

The lock turned.

The door opened.

But nobody was there.

Only an envelope sitting on the floor.

Daniel immediately stopped.

"Don't touch it."

I stared at the envelope.

My name was written on it.

Eleanor.

Again.

David's handwriting.

"He wants me to find it."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Then let's see what he wants me to know."

I picked it up.

Daniel looked like he wanted to stop me.

But he didn't.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

No explanation.

No apology.

Just one sentence.

"You always wanted the truth about your father. Be careful what you find."

I read it twice.

Then I turned the paper over.

Nothing.

But underneath the message was a symbol.

A small black mark.

Daniel saw it.

And his face changed.

"What is that?"

I looked at him.

"You know."

He didn't answer.

"Daniel."

He took a breath.

"That symbol belonged to a private organization."

"What organization?"

"The one your father was investigating."

I felt my chest tighten.

"David was part of it?"

Daniel looked away.

"Not exactly."

"Then what?"

"He wanted to control it."

I stared at him.

The pieces were becoming impossible to ignore.

The affair.

The money.

The hidden accounts.

My father's disappearance.

They weren't separate events.

They were connected.

And David was at the center of all of them.

Margaret walked toward us.

"There's something else you need to know."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She hesitated.

Then she reached into the pocket of her sweater.

She pulled out an old key.

"I kept this for years."

I stared at it.

"What does it open?"

She looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

"Your father's safety deposit box."

My heart skipped.

"You had this the whole time?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I was afraid."

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I was tired of hearing that word.

Everyone was afraid.

My father was afraid.

Margaret was afraid.

Daniel was afraid.

And while everyone was afraid, David kept winning.

"Where is it?"

Margaret looked down.

"At a bank in Manhattan."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Then we go now."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because if David knows about the key, he will move before we do."

I looked at the envelope again.

The message.

The symbol.

The warning.

David wasn't trying to hide the truth.

He was trying to control how I found it.

That was his mistake.

He thought he was writing the story.

He didn't realize I had picked up the pen.

The bank was almost empty when we arrived.

Daniel drove.

I sat in the passenger seat holding the key.

Margaret stayed behind.

She was too afraid to come.

I understood.

Some truths were easier to avoid than face.

But I couldn't avoid mine anymore.

The security officer looked at the paperwork.

Then looked at the key.

"You are Eleanor Hayes?"

I nodded.

He studied my face for a moment.

"Your father listed you as the only person allowed access."

My heart tightened.

"He knew I would come?"

The officer didn't answer.

He simply handed me the access form.

The box was opened in a private room.

Daniel stood beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

The small metal box looked ordinary.

That almost made it worse.

Inside something so simple could be the answer to years of questions.

I opened it.

At first, I saw documents.

Old photographs.

A small recorder.

And a sealed envelope.

My name was written on the front.

Not by David.

By my father.

I touched it carefully.

"Eleanor."

I looked at Daniel.

"He wrote this before he disappeared."

Daniel nodded.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My father's handwriting filled the page.

My daughter,

If you are reading this, then David has already shown you who he really is.

I stopped.

My hands shook.

I continued.

I wanted to protect you from the truth because I knew what he was capable of.

But hiding the truth also gave him power.

There was another document inside.

A list of names.

At the top was David Hayes.

Below it were several others.

Executives.

Investors.

Lawyers.

People with power.

Then I saw one name that made my stomach drop.

Claire Bennett.

Daniel leaned closer.

"She was involved."

I looked at the list.

"She wasn't just the other woman."

"No."

Daniel's voice was quiet.

"She was part of the operation."

I looked at the recorder.

My father had left a message.

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

My father's voice.

The sound I hadn't heard in years.

"Eleanor."

I covered my mouth.

My eyes filled immediately.

"If you are hearing this, I need you to know something."

A pause.

"I did not leave you."

I closed my eyes.

Those four words broke something inside me.

All those years.

All those nights wondering if he had chosen to abandon us.

He hadn't.

"I tried to expose David."

The recording continued.

"But I discovered something worse."

Daniel looked at me.

The recording became quieter.

"The person who helped David hide everything was not Claire."

I froze.

The room felt smaller.

My father's voice continued.

"It was someone you trusted more than anyone."

I looked at Daniel.

He looked confused too.

Then the recording stopped.

Just like that.

The battery died.

"No."

I pressed the button again.

Nothing.

Daniel immediately took out his phone.

"We need to recover the file."

I looked at the documents.

The list.

The names.

The evidence.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke at first.

Only breathing.

Then a woman's voice.

"Eleanor."

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it many times before.

At my kitchen table.

During family dinners.

On the phone.

The voice of someone who had comforted me while knowing the truth.

"I know you opened your father's box."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Who is this?"

A pause.

Then she said:

"The person who tried to save you."

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone pale.

Because he recognized the voice too.

Then the woman whispered:

"Don't trust Daniel."

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

A new message appeared immediately.

From the same number.

One photo.

I opened it.

And my entire body froze.

It was a picture of Daniel.

May you like

Standing beside David.

Taken the night my father disappeared.
