Chapter 6 - The Man Who Controlled the Shadows

The photograph fell from Adrian's hand.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
For several seconds, the only sound inside the hidden room was the rain hitting the mansion windows above us.
I stared at the message written on the back.
"Daniel was never on our side."
Six words.
Six words that destroyed everything we thought we knew.
Daniel stood near the doorway.
His expression had changed.
The calm, patient man who claimed to protect my father's secret was gone.
What remained was someone calculating.
Someone cornered.
"That's not possible," Adrian said.
His voice was quiet.
But I heard the anger underneath it.
Daniel looked at him.
"You're still trusting words written by a dead man?"
The sentence made the room colder.
Because Daniel didn't sound shocked.
He sounded prepared.
Adrian stepped forward.
"You knew my father."
"Yes."
"You worked with him."
"Yes."
"You had access to his investigation."
Daniel didn't answer.
That was enough.
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"How long?"
Daniel smiled slightly.
"How long what?"
"How long were you lying?"
My heart raced.
Because I realized something.
Daniel wasn't afraid of being exposed.
He was waiting for something.
Like this moment was part of a plan.
My mother moved closer to me.
"Emma, stay away from him."
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time, anger appeared on his face.
"Still pretending you were protecting her?"
My mother froze.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel laughed softly.
"You really never told her."
I looked at my mother.
"What?"
She looked away.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
I felt exhausted.
"Tell me."
My voice was low.
"Please."
My mother closed her eyes.
"I didn't tell you because I thought it would destroy you."
"Everything you hide destroys me anyway."
The words hurt her.
But they were true.
Daniel opened the folder again.
"Your mother wasn't just hiding from the people who killed your father."
He looked at me.
"She was hiding from what your father discovered about her."
My stomach tightened.
I looked at my mother.
"Mom?"
She didn't speak.
Daniel continued.
"Your father found out Elena Carter had been working with Adrian's father."
Adrian immediately turned toward him.
"That's a lie."
Daniel smiled.
"Is it?"
My mother finally spoke.
"I was working undercover."
Everyone stopped.
I stared at her.
"What?"
She looked at me.
"I wasn't helping them."
"Then what were you doing?"
"I was trying to find evidence."
My hands trembled.
"You were part of this entire world?"
She nodded slowly.
"Before you were born."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
The woman I remembered baking cookies in our kitchen.
The woman who sang while washing dishes.
The woman I thought had a normal life.
She had been living inside a war I knew nothing about.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because the moment you knew the truth, you became a target."
Daniel interrupted.
"She is already a target."
My eyes moved toward him.
"What do you want from me?"
For the first time, he looked directly at me.
Not like a victim.
Not like a daughter.
Like a person holding something valuable.
"Your father left something behind."
I looked at the flash drive.
"The drive?"
He nodded.
"Inside it is everything."
"Everything about what?"
Daniel looked at Adrian.
"About who really controls the Valenti empire."
Adrian's expression changed.
"I built this company."
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"You inherited it."
The words hit him.
Because Adrian knew.
There were parts of his family's history he had never been able to uncover.
Parts hidden from him.
I watched him carefully.
The billionaire.
The feared man.
The person everyone thought had all the answers.
For the first time, he looked lost.
"Where is the rest of the evidence?"
Daniel smiled.
"Still asking the wrong question."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Then what is the right question?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Why did your father trust Emma with the final piece?"
The room went silent.
I felt everyone looking at me.
"What final piece?"
Daniel walked toward the desk.
He opened a drawer.
Inside was another envelope.
Different from the first.
This one had my name on it.
Emma Carter.
My breath stopped.
My father had written it.
I reached for it.
But before I touched it, Daniel grabbed my wrist.
The movement was quick.
Too quick.
Adrian reacted instantly.
He grabbed Daniel's arm and forced him back.
"Don't touch her."
Daniel looked amused.
"There he is."
Adrian's eyes hardened.
"The man your father wanted you to become."
"What does that mean?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at the ceiling.
At the hidden cameras.
Then he smiled.
"You really think this room is secret?"
A second later, every screen inside the hidden office turned on.
The same camera feed appeared.
But this time, it wasn't from the ballroom.
It was from the secret room.
Someone had been watching us.
Watching everything.
Daniel looked directly at the camera.
"Are you happy now?"
Nobody responded.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Confident.
Familiar.
Victoria.
"You took longer than I expected."
My blood ran cold.
Adrian turned toward the speakers.
"Victoria."
Her laugh echoed through the room.
"Did you really think I was the one afraid tonight?"
The screen changed.
Victoria was sitting inside Adrian's private office upstairs.
She wasn't alone.
Someone was sitting across from her.
Someone whose face was hidden in darkness.
Daniel looked nervous for the first time.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Daniel was the man who had controlled every conversation.
And now he was afraid.
Victoria leaned closer to the camera.
"Emma."
I stepped toward the screen.
"How do you know my name?"
She smiled.
"Because I knew your father."
The room went silent.
Then she said:
"And I knew the night he died."
My breathing stopped.
Adrian stared at the screen.
"You weren't even in the city that night."
Victoria smiled.
"That's what I wanted everyone to believe."
The hidden office suddenly went dark.
All lights disappeared.
Then a single emergency light turned on.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming closer.
My mother grabbed my hand.
Adrian moved in front of us.
Daniel backed away.
Nobody knew who was coming.
Then the door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
The lock clicked.
May you like
The door slowly opened.
And the person standing outside was holding the original copy of my father's death report... with one word written across the front in red ink.
