Chapter 5 - The File That Should Have Disappeared

The basement door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The person standing behind it held a thick brown folder against their chest.
My father's investigation file.
I knew it before I even saw the label.
The handwriting.
The worn edges.
The small black mark in the corner.
Everything about it was familiar.
Because I had spent years searching for that exact file.
And I had always believed it was gone forever.
The figure stepped into the light.
A man.
Older.
Gray hair.
Dark suit.
His face was tired, but his eyes were sharp.
Adrian immediately recognized him.
"No."
The word came out like a warning.
The man's expression didn't change.
"Hello, Adrian."
The guards raised their weapons.
Adrian lifted his hand.
"Lower them."
Everyone looked at him.
"Sir?"
"I said lower them."
The guards hesitated.
Then slowly lowered their weapons.
I stared at Adrian.
"You know him."
Adrian didn't answer.
The older man looked at me.
Not at Adrian.
At me.
"Emma Carter."
Hearing my name from another stranger made my stomach twist.
"Who are you?"
The man looked down at the folder.
"My name is Daniel Cross."
He paused.
"I worked with your father."
My heart tightened.
Another person.
Another connection.
Another secret.
Everyone had known my father.
Everyone except me.
"Why do you have his file?"
Daniel looked at the folder.
"Because your father trusted me to protect it."
"Then why didn't you give it to me?"
His eyes changed.
Regret.
"I tried."
The answer confused me.
"What do you mean?"
He looked at my mother.
And the expression between them told me something.
They had met before.
"You weren't supposed to find this tonight."
My mother's voice became tense.
"Daniel."
He ignored her.
"You were supposed to stay away from this house."
I looked at Adrian.
"This house?"
Daniel nodded.
"Your father spent his final months investigating what happened inside this mansion."
Adrian's face hardened.
"My house?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Not yours."
A pause.
"The house belonged to your father first."
The words changed the room.
Adrian stepped forward.
"What are you talking about?"
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Photos.
Reports.
Names.
Dates.
I couldn't see everything.
But I saw one thing.
My father's handwriting.
Daniel pulled out the first page.
"He discovered someone inside the Valenti family was selling information."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Who?"
Daniel looked at him.
"That was the question your father never got to answer."
My mother closed her eyes.
Because she already knew where this was going.
"Someone killed him before he could finish."
The room went silent.
I felt anger rising again.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
I looked at Daniel.
"My father was killed."
"Yes."
"Then tell me who did it."
Daniel didn't answer.
And that silence made me furious.
"No."
I stepped closer.
"No more secrets."
My voice echoed through the basement.
"I spent fifteen years believing everyone I loved was gone."
I looked at my mother.
"Then I find out my mother is alive."
I looked at Adrian.
"Then I find out the man I was told to fear knew my father."
Then Daniel.
"And now another person appears with my father's file."
I pointed at the folder.
"I want the truth."
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel slowly handed me the file.
"Your father wanted you to have this when you were ready."
I took it.
The folder felt heavier than it should have.
Like it contained more than paper.
Like it contained every lie I had been living with.
I opened the first page.
The title was written at the top.
VALENTI FAMILY INVESTIGATION.
Below it were several names.
Adrian Valenti.
Victoria Hayes.
My father.
And one more.
A name I had never seen before.
But Adrian recognized it.
Because the moment he read it, his face changed.
"Impossible."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He didn't answer.
He took the paper from my hand.
His fingers tightened around it.
"Where did you get this name?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Your father found it."
Adrian's voice became colder.
"My father told me nobody knew."
"Your father was wrong."
I looked between them.
"Who is it?"
Nobody answered.
That scared me more than anything.
Because powerful people could lie.
But fear was harder to fake.
Then my phone vibrated.
Everyone looked at me.
I slowly pulled it out.
A new message.
Unknown number.
My heart sank.
Because the sender knew exactly where I was.
I opened it.
One photo.
A picture of the basement.
Taken moments ago.
From inside the room.
The message below contained only five words.
"Look behind your mother."
I froze.
Slowly...
I turned around.
My mother was standing exactly where she had been.
But something was different.
The wall behind her.
The old wooden panels.
One of them was slightly open.
Like someone had recently moved it.
Adrian noticed too.
He walked toward it.
"Stay back."
Nobody listened.
Because everyone saw the same thing.
A hidden space behind the wall.
Daniel's face turned pale.
"No."
My mother whispered.
"You found it."
Adrian looked at her.
"You knew this was here?"
She didn't answer.
That was enough.
Adrian pulled the hidden panel open.
Inside was a small room.
Not a storage area.
Not a basement closet.
A secret office.
Dust covered the desk.
Old documents filled the shelves.
And on the wall was a collection of photographs.
Photos of my father.
Photos of Adrian.
Photos of my mother.
And one final photograph placed in the center.
A photograph taken years after my father's supposed death.
My breath stopped.
Because standing beside my father in that picture...
Was the person who had been helping us search for the truth all night.
Daniel Cross.
The room went silent.
Then Adrian picked up the photograph.
And on the back was a handwritten message from my father.
May you like
Six words.
"Daniel was never on our side."
