Chapter 4 - The Person Behind The Warning

The door opened.
And I saw him standing there.
My heart stopped.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I knew that face.
I had seen it before.
Not recently.
Not in my home.
But in old photographs.
"Ethan's father?"
Richard Carter stood in the doorway.
The same man who had spent the morning carrying my boxes.
The same man who had avoided looking me in the eyes while his wife packed away my belongings.
But now he wasn't angry.
He wasn't confident.
He looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying a secret for years.
"Evelyn," he whispered.
Vanessa stepped away immediately.
"You shouldn't be here."
Richard looked at her.
"I could say the same thing."
I tightened my grip on the folder.
"What is going on?"
Nobody answered.
That silence told me more than words could.
I looked at Richard.
"You sent the message."
His eyes moved to my phone.
Then to the folder.
Finally, he nodded.
"Yes."
The room felt smaller.
"Why?"
He looked at Ethan's office.
Then closed the door behind him.
"Because you were about to make the same mistake I made."
I frowned.
"What mistake?"
Richard looked at me.
"Trusting him."
The words were almost identical to the message I had received.
And suddenly, everything became more terrifying.
Because this wasn't just one person warning me.
There were multiple people who knew something about Ethan.
Something I didn't.
"You knew about the plan."
Richard didn't deny it.
"I knew pieces of it."
"Pieces?"
My voice rose.
"My husband planned to remove me from my own life, and you only knew pieces?"
His expression changed.
Guilt.
Real guilt.
"I tried to stop him."
"When?"
"Before you came home yesterday."
I stared at him.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
He looked down.
Because he had no answer.
And that hurt more than if he had lied.
For years, I had thought Ethan was the only person who had betrayed me.
I was wrong.
There were people who watched.
People who knew.
People who stayed silent.
Richard took a breath.
"Ethan changed after his business recovered."
I laughed quietly.
"Recovered because of me."
He looked at the folder.
"I know."
The way he said it surprised me.
"You knew?"
Richard nodded.
"My son told people he saved himself."
He paused.
"But I knew the truth."
My hands tightened.
"Then why did you let him take credit?"
Richard looked away.
"Because I thought he would eventually realize what he had done."
I stared at him.
"He didn't."
"No."
The answer was immediate.
"He didn't."
Vanessa moved closer.
"So what exactly is Ethan planning?"
Richard looked at her.
"You don't know everything either."
Her face became tense.
"What does that mean?"
Richard didn't answer her.
Instead, he looked at me.
"The folder you found isn't the entire plan."
My stomach dropped.
"What?"
"There are more documents."
"Where?"
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation made me angry.
"Where, Richard?"
He looked toward the floor.
"Under the house."
I froze.
"What?"
"Ethan has another office."
I stared at him.
"The room upstairs was fake."
My eyes moved around.
A fake office.
A fake marriage.
A fake life.
How much of my reality had been manufactured?
Richard continued.
"He created the upstairs office so people would think they understood him."
"And the real one?"
"Hidden."
"Where?"
He looked at me.
"In the basement."
I felt a chill.
The basement.
The one place Ethan never let me enter.
I remembered all the times I asked why the door was locked.
"Old storage."
"Nothing important."
"Don't worry about it."
Every answer suddenly sounded different.
Richard reached into his jacket.
And pulled out a small key.
He placed it on the desk.
"This opens the basement."
I looked at the key.
"Why do you have it?"
Richard was silent.
Then he said:
"Because Ethan doesn't know I took it."
Before I could respond, Vanessa stepped forward.
"Wait."
We both looked at her.
She looked nervous.
"There's something else."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She swallowed.
"When Ethan left this morning, he wasn't going to the office."
Richard's expression changed.
"Where was he going?"
Vanessa looked at me.
"To meet someone."
"Who?"
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
"The person who helped him create the plan."
The room became silent.
I looked at Richard.
He looked as shocked as I felt.
"Who?" he asked.
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, my phone rang.
The screen showed Ethan's name.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The three of us stared at the phone.
Finally, I answered.
"Ethan."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Are you in my office?"
I didn't respond.
"You found the folder."
Still silent.
He laughed softly.
Not nervously.
Confidently.
"You always were curious."
I felt anger rise inside me.
"You planned this."
"No."
His voice remained relaxed.
"I planned everything."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"What does that mean?"
A pause.
Then:
"It means you still don't understand what kind of situation you're in."
I looked at Richard.
Then Vanessa.
"Ethan, what are you trying to do?"
His answer came quietly.
"Protect myself."
I almost laughed.
"From your wife?"
"From someone who knows too much."
The words made my body freeze.
"Who?"
Another pause.
Then Ethan said:
"You should ask your father-in-law why he really stayed quiet."
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone looked at Richard.
But Richard wasn't looking at me.
He was looking at the floor.
Like Ethan had just revealed something he had spent years hiding.
"Richard."
He didn't answer.
"Why did Ethan say that?"
His face changed.
And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.
Fear.
"I didn't tell you everything."
My heart sank.
"What didn't you tell me?"
Richard walked toward the desk.
He picked up the folder.
Then opened a hidden section inside.
There was another document.
Older.
Yellowed.
With a signature at the bottom.
I looked closer.
The signature belonged to me.
But the date was from before I married Ethan.
I stared at it.
"I never signed this."
Richard whispered:
"I know."
My breathing stopped.
Because if I didn't sign it...
Someone had signed for me.
Richard turned the paper around.
And pointed to the name written beneath mine.
The name of the person who had created the agreement.
The name of the person who started everything.
And when I saw it, I finally understood why Ethan had never been afraid of losing me.
Because he had never planned to let me leave.
May you like
The name at the bottom was:
Evelyn's father.
