Chapter 3 - The Folder That Exposed His Secret

The lights went out.
For a few seconds, I couldn't hear anything except my own breathing.
I stood frozen inside Ethan's locked office, my hand still resting on the folder with my name written across it.
The Exit Plan.
The words on the cover suddenly felt heavier than paper.
They felt like a warning.
My phone screen was still glowing in the darkness.
"If you found that folder, it means Ethan already started the second phase."
"You have five minutes to leave the house."
I read the messages again.
Then again.
My first instinct was to run.
But I didn't.
Because I had spent years running after Ethan.
Running to fix his problems.
Running to protect his reputation.
Running to save a marriage he had already decided to destroy.
I was done running.
I grabbed my phone and turned on the flashlight.
The office looked different in the darkness.
More dangerous.
The shelves that once looked ordinary now seemed like they were hiding something.
I looked at the folder again.
My fingers tightened around it.
If someone had risked sending me a warning, there was a reason.
And I needed to know why.
I opened it.
The first page was a document.
A legal document.
My eyes moved across the lines.
At first, I didn't understand what I was seeing.
Then I did.
My name.
My signature.
A transfer agreement.
But the date was wrong.
The document was dated six months earlier.
Six months before Ethan gave me divorce papers.
Six months before Vanessa appeared in my kitchen.
Six months before he told me our marriage was over.
My heart started beating faster.
I turned the page.
There were more documents.
Property transfers.
Financial agreements.
Insurance paperwork.
And then I saw something that made my stomach drop.
A document titled:
Emergency Separation Protection Plan.
I read the first sentence.
"This agreement ensures the removal of Evelyn Carter from shared assets following marital dissolution."
I stopped.
Removal.
Not separation.
Not divorce.
Removal.
I flipped through the pages faster.
Ethan wasn't planning a divorce.
Not at first.
He was planning a disappearance.
My disappearance.
The phone in my hand vibrated.
Another message.
Unknown number.
"Now you understand."
I stared at the screen.
My fingers moved quickly.
Who are you?
The reply came almost instantly.
"Someone who made the same mistake you did."
I frowned.
What mistake?
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally:
"Believing Ethan loved you."
I felt a cold feeling move through my body.
Because whoever this person was...
They knew him.
They knew what he had done.
A noise came from downstairs.
A door closing.
I froze.
The house was supposed to be empty.
Ethan and his parents had left hours ago.
I turned off my flashlight.
Slowly.
Carefully.
I stood completely still.
Another sound.
Footsteps.
Someone was walking through the hallway.
My first thought was Ethan.
But then I remembered.
Ethan had a key.
A person who owned a key didn't need to break in.
The footsteps moved closer.
I looked around the office.
There was nowhere obvious to hide.
The handle moved.
My breath stopped.
The door opened slightly.
A shadow appeared.
I grabbed the nearest object from the desk.
A heavy metal paperweight.
The door opened wider.
"Don't."
The voice was quiet.
Female.
I lowered the paperweight slightly.
A woman stepped into the room.
And I recognized her.
Vanessa.
But she looked completely different.
Gone was the confident woman from my kitchen.
Gone was the woman wearing my robe and drinking coffee like she owned my life.
Now she looked terrified.
"What are you doing here?" I whispered.
She closed the door behind her.
"I need to talk to you."
I laughed quietly.
"About what?"
She looked around nervously.
"About Ethan."
I stared at her.
"You came here to warn me about the man you were leaving me for?"
Her face tightened.
"I know how it looks."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You don't."
She stepped closer.
"Evelyn, I didn't know."
I almost smiled.
"Didn't know what?"
"That he was doing this."
I held up the folder.
"Doing what?"
Her eyes moved to the papers in my hand.
And I saw fear.
Real fear.
"He showed me a different version of everything."
I didn't answer.
Because I had heard that before.
Everyone had a different version of Ethan.
The hardworking businessman.
The victim.
The survivor.
The perfect husband.
But somehow, every version had one thing in common.
He was always the hero.
"I thought he was leaving you because he was unhappy," Vanessa continued.
I looked at her.
"And now?"
She swallowed.
"Now I think he was preparing to take everything from you."
The room went silent.
I wanted to hate her.
I really did.
But there was something in her face.
Something I recognized.
The same realization I had when I saw the divorce papers.
The moment when someone discovers the person they trusted wasn't who they thought.
"What happened?" I asked.
Vanessa looked toward the door.
Then lowered her voice.
"Two months ago, Ethan asked me to sign something."
"What?"
"A confidentiality agreement."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"He said it was because of your divorce."
My grip tightened.
"But?"
She looked at me.
"But I found another document attached to it."
"What document?"
Her voice became quieter.
"The one saying I would receive money after you left."
I felt my chest tighten.
"After I left?"
She nodded.
"Not after the divorce."
A pause.
"After you were gone."
The words hung between us.
I looked down at the folder.
The exit plan.
The second phase.
Five minutes to leave.
Suddenly, everything connected.
This wasn't about divorce.
It was about control.
Ethan didn't just want my marriage gone.
He wanted my life rewritten.
My phone vibrated again.
Both Vanessa and I looked at it.
Another message.
This time, the sender wasn't unknown.
It was Ethan.
"I know you're in my office."
My blood went cold.
Vanessa stepped back.
"He knows?"
I stared at the screen.
A second message arrived.
"You always were curious, Evelyn."
Then another.
"That's what made you dangerous."
I looked at Vanessa.
"How does he know I'm here?"
Her face changed.
"I don't know."
But then I noticed something.
Something small.
Something I had ignored.
Vanessa wasn't holding a phone.
She didn't need one.
Because her eyes moved toward her purse.
Slowly.
Guiltily.
I stepped back.
"Vanessa."
She froze.
"Why are you here?"
"I told you."
"No."
I looked at her carefully.
"You didn't come here to warn me."
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
"You came here because Ethan sent you."
She immediately shook her head.
"No."
But she said it too quickly.
I knew that reaction.
I had seen it in Ethan.
The desperate need to deny something before the question was even finished.
I moved closer.
"Who gave you the key?"
Silence.
Her face turned pale.
And that was the answer.
The front door downstairs suddenly slammed.
Hard.
Someone had entered the house.
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
"Evelyn..."
I grabbed the folder.
"Who is it?"
She didn't answer.
The footsteps below began moving upstairs.
Slowly.
One step.
Then another.
Vanessa whispered:
"You need to hide."
I stared at her.
"Why?"
She looked at the office door.
Because whoever was coming wasn't looking for the folder.
They were looking for me.
The footsteps stopped outside the room.
The handle slowly began to turn.
And then a voice came from the other side.
A voice I never expected to hear again.
May you like
"Evelyn..."
The door opened.
