Chapter 6 - The Recording My Father Hid From Me

The voice behind me said my name.

"Daniel."

I froze.

Not because I was afraid of the voice.

Because I recognized it.

I turned slowly.

And there he was.

Ryan.

My younger brother stood in the doorway of my father's hidden room.

The same brother who hugged me at my wedding.

The same brother who told me he would always stand beside me.

The same brother whose messages had been hidden from me for almost a year.

He looked different.

Not physically.

But something in his eyes had changed.

There was no guilt.

No surprise.

Only exhaustion.

Like he had been carrying a secret for too long.

"You shouldn't have come here."

I stared at him.

A strange calm came over me.

Hours ago, I thought discovering my wife's affair was the worst thing that could happen.

I was wrong.

The person standing in front of me was proof.

My marriage wasn't the only thing that had been falling apart.

My entire family had been built on lies.

"How long have you known about this room?"

Ryan didn't answer.

That was enough.

I looked at the recording device still sitting on the table.

"You knew Dad left this."

His jaw tightened.

"Yes."

The answer hit harder because he didn't deny it.

"You knew?"

He stepped inside.

"Daniel..."

"No."

I raised my hand.

"Don't say my name like you're worried about me."

His expression changed.

A small flash of pain crossed his face.

Good.

I wanted him to feel something.

Anything.

"You were my brother."

"I still am."

I laughed quietly.

"No."

I looked at him.

"My brother wouldn't help destroy my life."

Ryan looked away.

For the first time, I saw something in his expression.

Shame.

But it disappeared quickly.

"You don't understand."

I looked at him.

"That's the problem."

I pointed around the room.

"I have spent my entire life trying to understand everyone."

I stepped closer.

"I understood when Dad gave me more responsibility."

"I understood when you were angry."

"I understood when you pulled away."

I shook my head.

"But nobody tried to understand me."

Ryan remained silent.

The recording device sat between us.

A piece of my father's final truth.

"You heard the message?"

He nodded.

"Parts of it."

My eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

He looked uncomfortable.

"Some of it was missing."

"Missing?"

Ryan walked toward the table.

"There was another recording."

My stomach tightened.

"Where?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation.

Again.

Another person hiding something.

"Ryan."

He looked at me.

"The original recording wasn't meant for you."

I stared.

"What?"

"It was meant for me."

The room went quiet.

I couldn't understand.

"My father recorded a message for you?"

Ryan nodded.

"Before he died."

I looked at the device.

"Then why did he mention me?"

Ryan's face became darker.

"Because he knew I would make a choice."

I felt a chill.

"What choice?"

Ryan didn't answer.

Instead, he walked to the bookshelf and touched a small section near the bottom.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was another device.

Older.

Covered in dust.

My father's handwriting was on it.

Ryan.

I stared.

My brother picked it up.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he handed it to me.

"No."

I looked at him.

"You listen."

His eyes met mine.

"I've heard it enough times."

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my father's voice.

"Ryan."

I stopped breathing.

Hearing my father's voice again felt impossible.

"I know you are angry."

A pause.

"I know you believe Daniel was chosen over you."

Ryan looked away.

The recording continued.

"But anger is not the same thing as being betrayed."

My chest tightened.

My father knew.

He knew exactly what was happening inside my brother.

"I need you to understand something. Daniel did not take anything from you."

The sound cracked slightly.

"He never asked for more. He never wanted to hurt you."

Ryan closed his eyes.

I kept listening.

"I gave Daniel responsibility because he earned it."

A long silence.

"But I gave you something more important."

The recording stopped for a second.

Then my father's voice became softer.

"I gave you my trust."

Ryan looked down.

The words clearly hurt him.

Then my father's tone changed.

"If you are listening to this because you made a mistake, there is still time to fix it."

My hand tightened around the device.

A mistake.

That word again.

Everyone wanted to call betrayal a mistake.

"Ryan, if you are working with someone who is manipulating you, walk away."

My eyes moved toward my brother.

Someone.

My father knew there was someone else.

The recording continued.

"The person you trust most may not be the person protecting you."

The device clicked.

Then silence.

The message ended.

I looked at Ryan.

"What did he mean?"

Ryan didn't answer.

"Who was he talking about?"

Still nothing.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

This time, from Emily.

I looked at the screen.

Please don't trust Ryan.

My heart sank.

I looked at my brother.

Then back at the message.

Another message arrived.

He isn't the person who planned this.

I stared.

My fingers tightened.

A third message appeared.

Ask him what happened the night Dad died.

I looked up.

Ryan saw my face change.

"What did she say?"

I didn't answer.

Because suddenly, the question that had been buried for five years came back.

The night my father died.

The night Ryan was the last person to see him alive.

I remembered that night.

The phone call.

The hospital.

Ryan telling me Dad had collapsed suddenly.

A tragic accident.

That's what everyone called it.

An accident.

But now every word felt different.

"Daniel."

Ryan's voice interrupted my thoughts.

I looked at him.

"What happened that night?"

His face changed instantly.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

"You shouldn't ask that."

I stepped closer.

"Why?"

He looked toward the recording device.

Then toward the door.

"Because once you know the truth, there is no going back."

I stared at him.

"That sounds like something someone says when they have something to hide."

Ryan closed his eyes.

"I didn't kill Dad."

The words hit the room like an explosion.

I froze.

Because I hadn't asked that.

I hadn't even thought that.

But Ryan had said it.

Automatically.

Like it was the first thing he needed to defend.

"Why would you say that?"

He looked at me.

And for the first time in years, my brother looked genuinely afraid.

"Because someone else already thinks I did."

The lights suddenly came back on.

A loud sound came from the hallway.

The office door slowly moved.

Someone was standing outside.

Ryan stepped backward.

His face turned pale.

"Daniel..."

I looked at the door.

"Who is it?"

Ryan whispered:

May you like

"The person who has been controlling all of us."

The handle started turning.
