Chapter 3 - The Secret My Brother Helped Them Hide

The name on Michael’s phone screen was the one name I never expected to see.

Ryan Carter.

My younger brother.

For a few seconds, my mind refused to understand what I was looking at.

The letters were there.

Clear.

Impossible.

My brother’s name.

The person who stood beside me at my wedding.

The person who gave a speech about loyalty and family.

The person who told me I was lucky to have found a woman like Emily.

I looked at Michael.

Then at Emily.

Neither of them looked surprised.

That was when the pain changed.

Before that moment, I thought I had lost my marriage.

Now I realized I might have lost my entire family.

"What does my brother have to do with this?"

My voice sounded empty.

Michael lowered the phone slightly.

Emily stepped forward.

"Daniel, please."

I looked at her.

"Don't say please."

She stopped.

Because she knew.

That word no longer had the power it used to have.

"Answer me."

Michael looked at Emily.

She shook her head.

"Not here."

I almost laughed.

Not here.

After everything that had happened, she still wanted to control the moment.

Still wanted to decide what truth I was allowed to hear.

I took the phone from Michael's hand.

Emily tried to stop me.

"Daniel."

I ignored her.

The screen showed a conversation between Michael and Ryan.

At first, I couldn't focus.

My eyes moved across the messages, but my brain refused to process them.

Then I saw the dates.

The first message was from eleven months earlier.

Almost one year.

Long before I suspected anything.

Long before I started feeling the distance.

Long before I asked Emily if something was wrong.

Ryan:

"He still doesn't know anything?"

Michael:

"No. He trusts both of us."

I stopped breathing.

I kept scrolling.

Ryan:

"Good. Keep it that way."

Michael:

"How much longer do we have to pretend?"

Ryan:

"Until everything is ready."

My hands became cold.

Everything is ready.

What did that mean?

I looked up.

"My brother knew?"

Nobody answered.

I raised my voice.

"My brother knew?"

Emily covered her face.

Michael looked away.

That was enough.

The answer was yes.

A thousand memories suddenly felt different.

Every family dinner.

Every holiday.

Every conversation.

Ryan asking about my marriage.

Ryan telling me I should "give Emily more space."

Ryan saying I was too focused on work.

I thought he was helping me.

I thought he cared.

But maybe he was protecting himself.

"How long?" I asked.

Michael remained silent.

I turned to Emily.

"How long did my brother know?"

Her lips moved.

But no sound came out.

That silence destroyed the last piece of respect I had left.

"Answer me."

"Almost from the beginning."

The room went completely still.

Almost from the beginning.

I stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Emily started crying.

"Daniel..."

"No."

I stepped back.

"No more using my name like that."

She looked like I had slapped her.

Good.

For once, I wanted her to understand that words could hurt too.

"Tell me the truth."

She sat down slowly.

"I met Michael through Ryan."

I felt my stomach drop.

Through Ryan.

Of course.

The pieces were finally connecting.

Emily had told me Michael was a business contact.

A person she met through networking.

A coincidence.

Another lie.

"Ryan introduced you?"

She nodded.

"At a charity event."

I laughed quietly.

A painful, broken sound.

"My own brother introduced my wife to the man she cheated with."

"No," Emily said quickly.

I looked at her.

"No?"

She shook her head.

"It wasn't planned."

I stared at her.

"Then what was it?"

She looked down.

"I don't know."

That answer made me angry.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was empty.

People always said they didn't know when the truth was something they couldn't defend.

I walked toward the window.

The city lights outside blurred.

I remembered being twenty-seven years old.

Standing beside Emily on our wedding day.

Looking at my family.

Believing I had everything.

A wife who loved me.

A brother who supported me.

A future that felt secure.

I had no idea I was standing in the middle of a lie.

"Did Ryan help you hide it?"

Emily didn't answer.

Michael did.

"Yes."

I turned around.

Emily looked at him with anger.

"Why would you say that?"

Michael looked exhausted.

"Because I'm done lying."

I stared at him.

"You're done?"

I couldn't believe it.

"You think that makes you better?"

He looked away.

"No."

At least he admitted it.

"I know what I did."

"Then why?"

Michael was quiet.

Finally, he said:

"Because Ryan told me you were already planning to leave her."

I froze.

"What?"

Emily immediately looked at Michael.

"Stop."

But it was too late.

I heard the words.

"What did you just say?"

Michael swallowed.

"Ryan told me your marriage was already over."

I looked at Emily.

"Is that true?"

She didn't answer.

And once again, silence became the truth.

I walked closer.

"Emily."

She started crying.

"Things were bad between us."

"That wasn't my question."

She closed her eyes.

"Yes."

The word hit harder than I expected.

"You were planning to leave me?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"I was confused."

I looked at her.

"You had an affair because you were confused?"

She cried harder.

"I never wanted to hurt you."

"Stop saying that."

My voice became louder.

"Every single person who hurts someone says they didn't want to."

Nobody spoke.

Because there was nothing left to say.

I turned back to Michael.

"Why are you showing me this?"

He looked at the phone.

"Because there is more."

I stared at him.

More.

That word had become something I hated.

Every time someone said more, my life became worse.

"What else?"

Michael hesitated.

Then he opened another conversation.

"This."

He handed me the phone.

The message was from Ryan.

But this time, it wasn't about Emily.

It was about me.

Ryan:

"Once Daniel signs the papers, everything changes."

My heart stopped.

"What papers?"

Michael didn't answer.

I looked at Emily.

Her face had gone completely pale.

"Emily."

She didn't move.

"What papers?"

She whispered:

"Daniel, listen to me..."

"No."

I held up the phone.

"What papers?"

She started shaking.

"I didn't know it would happen like this."

That sentence.

That exact sentence.

I felt something inside me turn cold.

"Like what?"

She looked at me.

And for the first time that night, I saw real fear.

Not guilt.

Not sadness.

Fear.

"Ryan said you would never find out."

My eyes narrowed.

"Find out what?"

She looked toward the hallway.

Toward the office.

Toward the place where I had found the photograph.

Then she whispered:

"The reason they needed you to trust them."

I stood completely still.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

From Ryan.

I looked at the screen.

One sentence.

One warning.

"Daniel, don't believe anything Emily or Michael tells you."

I stared at the message.

Then another one arrived.

This time with an attachment.

I opened it.

And the picture loading on my screen was the same apartment I was standing in.

May you like

But the date was from three weeks earlier.

And in the photo, someone was already inside my home.
