Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Hidden Inside My Own Home

The photo loaded slowly.
For a few seconds, I saw nothing but darkness.
Then the image became clear.
My apartment.
My living room.
The same couch where I had sat with Emily countless nights.
The same table where we ate dinner.
The same place where I had believed I was safe.
But the date on the photo made my hands go numb.
Three weeks earlier.
Someone had been inside my home.
Someone had taken a picture.
Someone had been watching.
I looked at the screen again.
Then at Emily.
"Who took this?"
No one answered.
The silence felt heavier than before.
I turned toward Michael.
"You knew about this?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not."
His voice was different.
For the first time, he sounded afraid.
Not guilty.
Afraid.
I looked back at the picture.
The angle was strange.
It wasn't taken from the front door.
It wasn't taken from outside the window.
It was taken from inside the apartment.
Someone had stood in my living room.
Someone had looked around.
Someone had pointed a camera at the place where my entire life existed.
"Daniel," Emily whispered.
I didn't look at her.
"How long?"
"What?"
"How long have people been lying to me?"
She started crying again.
But this time, I didn't feel the same pain.
Something had changed.
Before, I wanted her to tell me the truth because I wanted to save something.
Our marriage.
Our memories.
The person I thought she was.
Now I only wanted answers.
"I don't know everything," she said.
I finally looked at her.
"You expect me to believe that?"
She shook her head.
"No."
At least she admitted it.
"I don't."
Michael walked closer.
"There is something you need to understand."
I laughed quietly.
"Every time someone says that, my life gets worse."
He didn't argue.
Because he knew I was right.
"Ryan wasn't just helping Emily hide the affair."
I stared at him.
"What was he doing?"
Michael looked at Emily.
She looked away.
That told me everything.
"Say it."
Michael took a breath.
"Ryan was collecting information about you."
The room went silent.
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
"Information?"
"Your business. Your accounts. Your investments."
I stared at him.
For a moment, I couldn't understand the words.
My brother.
My own brother.
The person I trusted most after my wife.
"Why?"
Michael hesitated.
Then he said:
"Because he knew about the company deal."
I froze.
The company.
Three months earlier, I had been negotiating a major expansion deal.
A deal that could completely change my company.
A deal worth millions.
Very few people knew the details.
My business partners.
My lawyer.
And my family.
Emily knew because I told her everything.
Ryan knew because he was my brother.
I looked at Emily.
"You knew?"
She closed her eyes.
"I knew you were working on something important."
"That's not what I asked."
Her silence answered.
I stepped away from both of them.
The room suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Every person around me had been connected to the thing I feared most.
Money.
Trust.
Betrayal.
"Did you give him information?"
Emily immediately shook her head.
"No."
Too fast.
I noticed.
She noticed that I noticed.
"I didn't," she repeated.
"Then what did you do?"
She looked down.
"I answered questions."
My stomach tightened.
"What kind of questions?"
"Daniel..."
"What kind?"
Her voice became smaller.
"He asked about your schedule."
I stared at her.
"My schedule?"
She nodded.
"When you traveled. When you had meetings. When you were usually home."
I felt cold.
Because suddenly the photo made sense.
Someone wasn't randomly inside my apartment.
Someone knew when I wouldn't be there.
"Why would Ryan need that?"
Nobody answered.
I walked toward the kitchen.
I needed distance.
I needed air.
But every step reminded me of something.
The dinner table where Ryan sat during holidays.
The chair where Emily drank coffee every morning.
The walls filled with memories that now felt fake.
"How long were you planning this?"
Emily stood.
"Daniel, please listen."
I turned.
"No."
She stopped.
"I listened for years."
My voice was quieter now.
"Every excuse. Every explanation. Every time you told me I was imagining things."
Tears fell from her eyes.
"I was wrong."
"Yes."
I nodded.
"You were."
The honesty surprised her.
Maybe she expected anger.
Maybe she expected screaming.
But anger was easy.
Pain was harder.
"I trusted you with everything."
She covered her mouth.
"I know."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You don't."
I pointed toward the phone.
"You knew I trusted you."
I looked at Michael.
"You knew I trusted you."
Then I looked at the photo.
"And you used that."
Nobody spoke.
The apartment was completely silent.
Then Michael said something that changed everything.
"Ryan didn't want your money."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"He wanted control."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Michael looked uncomfortable.
"He believed you had everything because everyone always chose you."
I stared.
"My brother said that?"
Michael nodded.
"He was angry."
"About what?"
The answer came from Emily.
"Your father."
I stopped.
My father had died five years earlier.
His death had changed everything.
Before that, Ryan and I were close.
After that, things slowly became different.
I inherited my father's company shares.
Ryan received a different portion of the estate.
Nothing unfair.
At least, that was what I believed.
"He thought Dad favored you," Emily said.
I looked at her.
"That was five years ago."
"I know."
"And this started because of that?"
She didn't answer.
Because maybe it did.
Maybe my brother had been carrying resentment for years.
Maybe I had ignored it because I couldn't imagine him becoming someone who would hurt me.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
From Ryan.
This time, there was no warning.
Just a location.
A place.
And a time.
I opened it.
My blood ran cold.
Because it was an address.
Not a random address.
My father's old office.
The building that had been empty since his death.
Underneath the location were five words.
"Come alone. You need to see this."
I looked up.
Emily was watching me.
Her face changed when she saw the message.
"You can't go."
I narrowed my eyes.
"Why?"
She didn't answer.
That scared me more than anything.
"Emily."
Her hands started shaking.
"Because Ryan won't be alone."
I stared at her.
"What does that mean?"
She looked toward the front door.
Then back at me.
May you like
And whispered:
"Because the person who helped him start this was already waiting there."
