Chapter 6 - The Recording That Destroyed Derek Whitmore

"Once Claire is gone, Emily will be the perfect replacement."
The words came from the speakers.
Derek's voice.
My husband's voice.
Ten years younger.
Calm.
Confident.
Like he was discussing a business strategy.
Not a person.
Not a life.
Not me.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The video continued playing on the large screen near the staircase.
The image was dark and grainy.
A hidden camera.
A private conversation.
But the voice was unmistakable.
Derek.
Sitting behind his office desk.
Talking to someone outside the camera's view.
"I don't understand why you're hesitating," Derek said in the recording.
"Claire already suspects too much."
My hands became cold.
I looked at Claire.
She looked down.
Like she had spent ten years remembering every second of this moment.
The recording continued.
"She won't stop until she exposes everything."
A man's voice answered.
I didn't recognize it.
"You said she was going to sign the papers."
Derek leaned back in his chair.
"I'll make sure she does."
The screen flickered.
Then another image appeared.
A document.
My document.
The same contract I had found earlier.
The one with my signature.
The one I didn't remember signing.
My heart started beating faster.
Because now I understood.
Derek had not simply hidden the truth.
He had created a plan.
A plan where I was never the person he loved.
I was the person he needed.
"Turn it off."
Derek's voice broke through the room.
Not the recording.
The real Derek.
He moved toward the control panel.
Adrian stepped in front of him.
"No."
"Damn it, Adrian."
For the first time, Derek lost control.
The powerful businessman disappeared.
The charming husband disappeared.
The mask fell.
"You don't know what you're doing."
Adrian looked at him.
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
The video continued.
Derek's younger voice filled the room again.
"After Claire disappears, I need someone clean."
A pause.
"Someone people trust."
The screen showed another image.
A photo of me.
Taken years before I met Derek.
I felt sick.
Because it wasn't a random photo.
It was from my workplace.
From the nonprofit organization where I used to volunteer.
The place where Derek first found me.
"He researched me."
I whispered.
Claire looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
Those two words almost broke me.
Because I didn't want her apology.
I wanted my life back.
I wanted the last ten years to make sense.
I wanted all the memories I had protected to still belong to me.
But they didn't.
Not anymore.
Derek stared at the screen.
Then at me.
"Emily."
I didn't answer.
"Listen."
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
"That's what you always say."
He froze.
"Listen."
I repeated.
"Every time you lie, you tell me to listen."
My eyes burned.
"Every time you hurt me, you tell me I don't understand."
I looked at the screen.
"Every time I get close to the truth, you tell me I'm imagining things."
I turned back toward him.
"But I wasn't."
The silence after that was different.
Before, Derek controlled silence.
Now he was trapped inside it.
Vanessa slowly stepped away from him.
"You planned all of this?"
Derek looked at her.
She looked terrified.
Not because of the recording.
Because she finally understood her position.
She wasn't his partner.
She was another piece on his board.
"You knew about Emily before you met her."
Her voice shook.
Derek didn't answer.
"Didn't you?"
Still nothing.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"Oh my God."
Claire looked at her.
"Now you understand."
Vanessa shook her head.
"No."
She looked at Derek.
"No, you told me she was unstable."
Derek's expression changed.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But enough.
"You told me she was obsessed with you."
Vanessa looked at me.
Then back at him.
"You told me she was the problem."
My chest tightened.
Because I knew those words.
Not about Vanessa.
About myself.
Years ago.
Derek had done the same thing.
He had convinced me everyone else was dangerous.
Everyone else was trying to hurt him.
Everyone else was the enemy.
Except him.
Adrian picked up the flash drive from the floor.
"This is only one file."
Derek looked at him.
"What?"
Adrian held it up.
"There are more."
A shadow crossed Derek's face.
"What files?"
Adrian smiled slightly.
"The ones you never knew I had."
Derek stepped forward.
"Where did you get them?"
"From Claire."
Derek turned toward her.
And Claire finally looked afraid.
Not of him.
Of what was coming.
"You recorded everything?"
Derek whispered.
Claire nodded.
"After I discovered what you were doing, I knew nobody would believe me."
She swallowed.
"So I collected proof."
Derek stared at her.
"Then why didn't you expose me?"
Claire's eyes became colder.
"Because you threatened my family."
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
"What?"
She looked at me.
"He told me if I went to the police, people I loved would suffer."
My stomach dropped.
Derek's expression remained empty.
And somehow that was worse.
Because it meant he wasn't denying it.
"You made me disappear," Claire continued.
"You made everyone believe I died."
Her voice shook.
"But I stayed alive because I knew one day someone else would need the truth."
She looked at me.
"That someone was you."
I looked away.
The pain was too much.
Because suddenly every strange moment in my marriage made sense.
The locked drawers.
The missing documents.
The private phone calls.
The way Derek always became nervous whenever I asked about his past.
He hadn't been protecting our marriage.
He had been protecting himself.
A loud sound suddenly came from outside.
A car door.
Then another.
Everyone froze.
Adrian looked toward the windows.
"We need to leave."
Derek smiled.
A small, terrifying smile.
"You think you can walk out?"
Nobody answered.
He reached toward the security panel.
The doors remained locked.
The mansion had become a cage.
My cage.
"Open the doors, Derek."
Adrian's voice remained calm.
Derek looked at him.
"No."
One word.
And I saw it.
The final piece.
He wasn't trying to hide anymore.
He was trying to survive.
Claire stepped closer to me.
"Emily, you need to know something."
I looked at her.
"What?"
Her face turned pale.
"The video wasn't the worst thing I found."
My heart sank.
"What do you mean?"
She looked toward the upstairs hallway.
"The reason Derek needed you wasn't only because of your reputation."
I felt a chill.
"Then why?"
Claire opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the mansion intercom suddenly activated.
A woman's voice came through.
A voice none of us recognized.
"Mr. Whitmore."
Derek froze.
The voice continued.
"You have five minutes before the police receive everything."
Adrian looked at me.
Claire looked terrified.
And Derek whispered one name.
A name I had never heard before.
May you like
Because whoever was speaking through the intercom was the one person Derek feared more than anyone.
And then the front gate camera turned on, revealing who was standing outside.
