Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind My Marriage

The date on the paper stared back at me.

Three months before my wedding.

Three months before I walked down the aisle believing I was marrying the man I loved.

Three months before I promised Derek Whitmore forever.

My fingers went cold.

I looked at the photograph attached behind the document.

And I felt the room disappear.

Because the woman standing beside Derek in that picture was not Vanessa.

It was me.

But not the me from our wedding day.

Not the me from our honeymoon.

Not the me who smiled beside him while believing I had found my future.

This was a picture taken before I knew him.

Before I loved him.

Before I trusted him.

I was standing outside a hospital entrance.

And beside me was Adrian Cole.

My heart stopped.

"Derek."

My voice came out smaller than I expected.

He didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

His silence said everything.

"What is this?"

The question hung between us.

Derek looked at Adrian.

Not me.

That hurt more than I expected.

Because even after everything, some small part of me had hoped he would look at me and finally tell the truth.

Instead, he looked at the one person who could expose him.

"You had no right," Derek said.

Adrian remained calm.

"You lost that argument years ago."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Derek, what is he talking about?"

For the first time that night, she sounded afraid.

Not curious.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Derek ignored her.

"Emily doesn't need to know this."

I stared at him.

"Doesn't need to know what?"

Nothing.

He said nothing.

And that silence cut deeper than any lie.

I looked down at the document again.

Emergency Protection Agreement.

My name.

My signature.

But I didn't remember signing anything.

"I never signed this."

Adrian looked at me carefully.

"You did."

"No."

I shook my head.

"I would remember."

"You would remember the night."

A pause.

"You wouldn't remember everything that happened after."

My breathing stopped.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian glanced at Derek.

"Ask your husband."

Derek's expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

The same fear from earlier.

The fear of something buried coming back.

"You need to leave," Derek said.

Adrian almost smiled.

"Still giving orders."

"You are in my house."

"No."

Adrian looked around.

"That is what you wanted everyone to believe."

He stepped closer.

"But this house was never completely yours."

My eyes moved between them.

I felt like I was watching a conversation in a language I didn't understand.

A decade of my life suddenly felt like a locked room.

And someone had just found the key.

"Derek."

I forced myself to speak.

"Tell me the truth."

His face softened.

A performance.

I knew it now.

Every expression.

Every pause.

Every carefully chosen word.

I had spent ten years studying him without realizing I was studying a liar.

"Emily, Adrian is trying to manipulate you."

I looked at Adrian.

Then back at Derek.

"Why?"

He didn't answer.

"Why would he do that?"

Silence.

Because there was no answer.

Because the truth was worse.

Vanessa moved closer to Derek.

"Maybe we should go."

I looked at her.

"You knew."

Her eyes flickered.

Just for a second.

But enough.

"You knew something."

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"I know that Derek loves me."

The words landed strangely.

Not because they hurt.

Because they sounded rehearsed.

Like something she had repeated to herself.

Again.

And again.

Until she believed it.

"You think he loves you?"

She looked at me.

"Yes."

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Because she didn't understand.

Derek didn't love people.

Derek collected them.

He collected loyalty.

He collected power.

He collected secrets.

And when someone became inconvenient, he erased them.

Just like he had tried to erase Adrian.

"Open the second page."

Adrian's voice cut through the room.

I looked down.

There was another page behind the photograph.

My hands shook as I pulled it out.

This one was different.

A legal document.

A contract.

At the bottom were two signatures.

Derek Whitmore.

And mine.

Except the date was wrong.

My eyes narrowed.

"This says I signed this before I met you."

Derek froze.

I looked up.

"How is that possible?"

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian answered.

"Because you met Derek long before he introduced himself as Derek."

The room went silent.

A memory appeared.

A small one.

Something I had forgotten.

Years ago.

Before my wedding.

Before the luxury house.

Before the business events.

I had been working at a nonprofit organization.

I had helped investigate financial records for a company accused of hiding donations.

One night, someone had followed me home.

A man had offered to help.

A stranger.

A man who told me he admired my courage.

A man who said he wanted to protect me.

I remembered his voice.

His kindness.

His promises.

But I had never seen his face clearly.

Until now.

I looked at Derek.

"No."

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Because my mind had already connected the pieces.

"You weren't a stranger."

Derek looked away.

And that was the answer.

I stepped back.

"You knew me."

No response.

"You knew who I was before we met."

Still nothing.

"You planned this."

"Emily."

His voice cracked slightly.

The first real emotion I had heard from him.

But it wasn't guilt.

It was desperation.

"I can explain."

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I finally understood how ridiculous those words were.

After ten years.

After tonight.

After everything.

"I don't want your explanation."

My voice became steadier.

"I want the truth."

Adrian watched silently.

Then he spoke.

"There is one thing you still don't know."

I turned toward him.

"What?"

He reached into his jacket again.

This time he pulled out a small envelope.

Different from the first.

Newer.

Sealed.

"This was delivered to me yesterday."

Derek's face changed immediately.

"What?"

Adrian looked at him.

"You know exactly what this is."

Vanessa looked between them.

"What is happening?"

Nobody answered her.

Adrian handed me the envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

But this time, beneath my name, there was another line.

A message.

A warning.

My hands tightened.

"Who sent this?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because he was watching Derek.

And Derek was watching the envelope like it was a bomb.

I slowly opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

I pulled it out.

Then I stopped breathing.

Because the picture showed Derek.

But he wasn't alone.

He was standing beside another woman.

A woman I recognized.

A woman who was supposed to be dead.

I looked at Adrian.

Then at Derek.

"Derek..."

His face turned completely pale.

May you like

Because he knew I had seen her.

And then the lights in the mansion suddenly went out.
