Chapter 1 - The Fifth Strike

I dropped my phone beside the fireplace and whispered:

"Please... stop."

When billionaire investor Adrian Cole arrived, he found a broken phone case beside the marble floor.

But three words were scratched inside:

"Call Adrian Cole."

He realized this was not a simple marriage fight.

The first thing I remember was the sound.

Not the shouting.

Not Vanessa's cruel laughter.

Not even Derek's footsteps crossing the marble floor.

It was the silence afterward.

That was the moment everything inside me changed.

For five years, I had trained myself to survive Derek Whitmore's anger.

I learned the rhythm of his moods.

I learned when to stay quiet.

I learned when to apologize even when I had done nothing wrong.

I learned how to smile at charity events after spending the night before crying alone in our bedroom.

People outside our home thought Derek was brilliant.

A self-made businessman.

A generous philanthropist.

A man who built an empire from nothing.

They saw his expensive suits, his perfect speeches, and the way powerful people shook his hand.

They never saw what happened when the doors closed.

They never saw the man who looked at me like I was something he owned.

They never saw the fear.

Until that night.

The night of our tenth wedding anniversary.

The night I finally stopped being afraid.

"Derek, please," I whispered again, my voice barely recognizable.

I was sitting on the cold marble floor beside the fireplace in our living room.

My black evening dress, the same one I had carefully chosen for our anniversary dinner, was torn at the shoulder.

My hair had fallen loose.

My hands were shaking.

Across from me stood my husband.

Derek Whitmore.

Forty-eight years old.

Tall.

Powerful.

A man who controlled boardrooms with a single sentence.

But inside our home, he controlled something else.

Fear.

He held the leather riding crop loosely in his hand.

It was something he kept displayed in his private office.

Something I had always hated seeing.

Something I never imagined would become a weapon.

"Maybe now you'll learn," Derek said coldly, "not to embarrass me."

I looked past him.

And I saw her.

Vanessa Shaw.

Standing near the staircase.

Wearing a deep red evening gown.

Perfect blonde hair.

Perfect makeup.

A perfect smile.

The woman who had spent months whispering lies into my husband's ear.

The woman who had convinced Derek that I was ruining his reputation.

The woman who had turned my marriage into a battlefield.

"Tell him the truth, Vanessa," I said quietly.

Her smile disappeared for half a second.

Then it returned.

"Oh, Emily," she said softly. "You still don't understand, do you?"

My stomach tightened.

I hated the way she said my name.

Like I was a child.

Like I was something beneath her.

"You made him look weak," Vanessa continued. "You questioned him in front of investors. You challenged his decisions. You forgot your place."

My fingers curled against the marble floor.

"My place?"

Derek's expression hardened.

"Don't start again."

Again.

That word.

As if I was always the problem.

As if asking why my husband was disappearing every night was unreasonable.

As if finding messages between him and Vanessa was my fault.

As if discovering their affair was something I had done to him.

"Derek," I said, forcing myself to look at him. "You know what she did."

His jaw tightened.

"No."

One word.

A complete rejection.

"No, I know what you did."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"You humiliated me."

The room felt smaller.

"I humiliated you?"

"You caused a scene at the hotel."

"Because I found you with her."

Vanessa looked away.

Just for a moment.

But I noticed.

I noticed everything now.

"You followed me," Derek said.

"Because you were lying."

"You embarrassed me."

"You betrayed me."

His face changed.

Not sadness.

Not regret.

Anger.

Pure anger.

And that was when I understood something I should have understood years earlier.

Derek was not angry because I hurt him.

He was angry because I discovered the truth.

The fifth strike came after that.

I don't remember deciding to stop crying.

I don't remember deciding to stop begging.

I only remember hearing the sound.

Then feeling something inside me break.

Not my body.

Something deeper.

Something I had spent years protecting.

The belief that if I loved him enough, he would remember loving me back.

I slowly lifted my head.

Derek looked down at me.

For the first time that night, he looked uncertain.

Maybe because I wasn't crying anymore.

Maybe because I wasn't apologizing.

Maybe because I wasn't asking him to forgive me.

I was just looking at him.

Really looking at him.

And I saw a stranger.

"Derek," Vanessa whispered.

He looked toward her.

"What?"

She stepped closer.

"We should leave."

I almost laughed.

Leave.

That was her solution.

They would walk away.

They would pretend nothing happened.

Tomorrow Derek would appear on television wearing another expensive suit.

Vanessa would attend another business event beside him.

And everyone would continue believing they were perfect.

But I was done helping them protect that lie.

My hand moved slowly across the floor.

Toward my phone.

The screen was cracked.

The case was broken.

But it still worked.

Derek noticed.

"What are you doing?"

I didn't answer.

"Emily."

His voice changed.

A warning.

A threat.

But for the first time, it didn't control me.

I unlocked the phone.

My fingers moved over the screen.

I opened the one contact Derek had always hated.

The one name that could make his confident expression disappear.

The one person he refused to challenge.

The one person he had spent years trying to destroy.

Vanessa noticed first.

Her face changed.

"Wait."

Derek turned toward her.

"What?"

She stared at my phone.

Then at me.

"Who are you calling?"

I pressed the button.

The call connected.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Then Derek stepped forward.

"Emily."

I looked up.

My voice was calm.

Stronger than I expected.

"The person you told me never to contact."

The color disappeared from Derek's face.

Because he knew exactly who I meant.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then someone answered.

A deep voice filled the silent room.

"Emily?"

I closed my eyes.

Because hearing that voice reminded me that I was not alone.

Derek took one step back.

Vanessa stopped smiling.

And then the voice on the phone asked the question that changed everything.

"Why is my name saved as an emergency contact in your phone?"

I looked at Derek.

I looked at Vanessa.

Neither of them understood.

Not yet.

But they would.

Because the man on the other end of the call already knew something they didn't.

May you like

Something Derek had spent years hiding.

The front door opened behind us.
