Chapter 6 - The Memory They Took From Me

The person standing outside the door was someone I thought I would never see again.

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Because I knew that face.

Not from a photograph.

Not from a file.

From a memory I had spent years trying to forget.

The man standing in the hallway looked older.

His hair was gray.

His face had changed.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

Familiar.

"Commander Ward."

Daniel whispered the name before I could say it.

The room froze.

My father's expression collapsed.

Because he knew.

Daniel knew.

And somehow, after everything I had discovered that night, I still felt like I was the last person to understand what was happening.

Commander Ward looked at me through the open doorway.

Then he smiled.

Not warmly.

Not like someone returning from the dead.

Like someone who had been waiting for this exact moment.

"Evelyn Carter."

Hearing my full name from him made my skin crawl.

I stepped back.

"You died."

Ward tilted his head slightly.

"That's what they wanted everyone to believe."

Daniel moved forward.

"Commander, how are you alive?"

Ward looked at him.

"That's the question you should have been asking six years ago."

The words hit Daniel hard.

Because he knew.

Whatever happened six years ago wasn't just a mission failure.

It was a cover-up.

I looked at my father.

He couldn't even look at me.

That hurt more than anything.

Because my father had always been the person I believed would protect me.

But now I realized something terrifying.

He had protected me from the truth.

And maybe he had protected the truth from me.

Ward stepped into the room.

Nobody stopped him.

Not because they trusted him.

Because nobody knew what to do.

"You all have questions."

His eyes moved around the room.

"Good."

He looked at me.

"Because Evelyn deserves answers."

My father finally found his voice.

"Leave."

Ward smiled.

"Still giving orders, Richard?"

My father's jaw tightened.

"You don't know what you're doing."

"No."

Ward looked around.

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

He reached into his coat and pulled out a small device.

Daniel immediately reacted.

"What is that?"

"A recording."

My heart tightened.

Ward placed it on the table.

"Something Richard hoped would disappear forever."

My father moved toward it.

"No."

Just one word.

But the fear behind it was obvious.

I stared at him.

"What is on that recording?"

Nobody answered.

Ward looked at me.

"Your last mission."

The room went silent.

My hands became cold.

"I remember that mission."

Ward shook his head.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"You remember what you were allowed to remember."

The sentence felt like a punch.

Because Elena had said the same thing.

My memories.

The missing pieces.

The years I couldn't explain.

All connected.

I looked at my father.

"Did you erase my memories?"

His silence was the answer.

My chest tightened.

"Why?"

He finally looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen in my father before.

Shame.

"Because you asked me to."

I froze.

"What?"

Ward looked at him.

"Tell her the whole truth."

My father closed his eyes.

"You don't understand."

"No."

My voice shook.

"You don't get to say that anymore."

Everyone was silent.

I stepped closer.

"I spent six years believing I failed."

My voice became louder.

"I spent six years thinking I lost people because I wasn't good enough."

I pointed at my father.

"And you knew."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I knew."

The honesty hurt.

Because I wanted him to deny it.

I wanted him to give me another reason to hate him.

But instead, he looked broken.

"I knew because I was there."

The room stopped.

Daniel looked at him.

"You were at the operation?"

My father nodded.

"I was the person who approved it."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

He looked at the floor.

"Because Elena discovered something she wasn't supposed to find."

Ward spoke.

"She discovered the network."

My eyes moved between them.

"What network?"

Ward answered.

"The one that controlled military contracts, intelligence operations, and classified information."

Daniel frowned.

"That isn't possible."

Ward looked at him.

"It was possible because people with power made sure nobody questioned it."

I looked at the folder Elena left behind.

The burned edges.

The missing pages.

The erased names.

"Elena found evidence."

Ward nodded.

"Yes."

"And my father tried to stop her."

Nobody spoke.

My father whispered:

"I tried to protect you."

I turned toward him.

"From what?"

His answer came quietly.

"From becoming the next target."

That sentence changed something.

Because for the first time, I realized my father wasn't only hiding guilt.

He was hiding fear.

Ward stepped closer.

"Richard wasn't the only one involved."

Daniel looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Ward looked at me.

"Your sister knows more than she thinks."

Everyone turned.

Claire went pale.

"What?"

I stared at her.

"No."

Ward nodded.

"Yes."

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know anything."

Ward looked at her.

"Your engagement to Daniel wasn't random."

Daniel immediately looked confused.

"What are you talking about?"

Claire looked at him.

"Daniel..."

Ward continued.

"Your father needed someone close to the military community."

Daniel's face changed.

"You used me?"

Claire started crying.

"No."

Ward looked at me.

"And you were the one person they never considered."

I frowned.

"What?"

"Because everyone thought you were invisible."

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

My family underestimated me.

The people behind the operation underestimated me.

Everyone thought being ignored meant being powerless.

They were wrong.

Ward reached into his coat again.

This time, he pulled out a small memory drive.

He placed it beside the folder.

"This contains the original mission files."

Daniel picked it up.

"There are no labels."

"There shouldn't be."

Ward looked at me.

"Only one person can open it."

My stomach tightened.

"Who?"

Ward didn't answer.

He just looked at the silver pin on my collar.

Then I understood.

The pin wasn't only a symbol.

It was a key.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

I looked down.

A new message.

Unknown number.

This time there was no text.

Only a video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed a security camera recording.

A room.

A chair.

Someone sitting there.

My heart stopped.

Because the person in the video was me.

Six years younger.

Wearing my uniform.

Talking to someone outside the camera view.

Then my younger self said something that made everyone in the room go silent.

"I know who betrayed us."

The video paused.

Then another voice spoke from behind the camera.

A voice I recognized immediately.

My own father's voice.

"Evelyn, when you wake up, you won't remember any of this."

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then one final message appeared.

"Come back to where it started."

Below it was an address.

An address I knew.

Because it was the place where my life had changed forever.

The old military facility.

The one that had been abandoned six years ago.

Daniel looked at me.

"Evelyn..."

But I was already walking toward the door.

Because someone had been waiting there all along.

I reached for the handle.

May you like

It was already unlocked from the inside.

Someone was waiting for me.
