Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Came Back

The door handle moved.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

My father took one step backward.

That was the moment I knew.

Whatever was on the other side of that door was not a stranger.

It was someone he feared.

The door opened slowly.

A woman stepped inside.

She wasn't wearing a disguise.

She wasn't hiding.

She walked into the room like she belonged there.

Like she had been expected.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

My eyes locked onto her face.

The photograph on my phone.

The memory from six years ago.

The name I thought belonged only to the past.

Elena Voss.

Alive.

Standing ten feet away from me.

Claire gasped.

My mother grabbed the edge of the table.

Daniel immediately moved in front of me.

Not because he thought I needed protection.

Because every instinct he had as a soldier was telling him something was wrong.

The woman looked at him.

Then at me.

Then at my father.

"Richard."

My father's face went pale.

"I thought you were dead."

Elena smiled.

It wasn't a happy smile.

It was the kind of smile someone gave when they had spent years waiting to hear an apology.

"You wanted me to be."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The room felt smaller.

I stared at her.

Trying to connect the person standing in front of me with the memory I had buried.

Six years ago.

A mission that went wrong.

A team that disappeared.

A person I believed I had failed to save.

But she wasn't dead.

She was here.

And she knew my father.

"You knew," I whispered.

Elena looked at me.

Her expression softened for one second.

"I knew you would find out eventually."

The words confused me.

"You were watching me?"

She didn't answer.

That answer was enough.

My chest tightened.

For years, I thought I was the one hiding.

I thought I was the person carrying secrets.

But the truth was different.

Everyone had been hiding something from me.

Elena looked around the room.

At my family.

At Daniel.

Then back at me.

"You brought them here."

I frowned.

"What?"

She looked at my father.

"You really never told her."

My father shook his head.

"Elena, don't do this."

Her eyes turned cold.

"Don't do what, Richard?"

The room went silent.

"Tell your daughter the truth?"

My father's voice became harder.

"You don't understand."

"No."

Elena stepped forward.

"I understand perfectly."

Daniel looked between them.

"Someone needs to explain what is happening."

Elena looked at him.

"Your commander never told you either?"

Daniel froze.

"What?"

She smiled slightly.

"Interesting."

She looked at me.

"Apparently Richard was better at controlling information than I thought."

My father stepped forward.

"Enough."

For the first time, Elena looked angry.

"No."

Her voice echoed through the room.

"You don't get to say enough."

She reached into her coat.

Every person in the room reacted.

Daniel's hand moved toward his side.

I raised my hand.

"Wait."

Elena pulled out a small black folder.

Old.

Damaged.

The edges were burned.

She placed it on the table.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

Not the folder.

The symbol on the front.

The same symbol that had been hidden inside my military records.

The same symbol connected to the operation six years ago.

Daniel stared at it.

"Where did you get that?"

Elena looked at him.

"I stole it back."

My father closed his eyes.

"You have no idea what you are starting."

Elena laughed quietly.

"That's what you told me six years ago."

I looked at my father.

"What was in that folder?"

He didn't answer.

I walked toward the table.

"Evelyn."

His voice sounded like a warning.

I stopped.

Because my father had never used that tone with me.

Not once.

"Don't open it."

Those four words told me everything.

Because people only begged you not to open something when they were afraid of what you would discover.

I reached for the folder.

Elena watched me.

"You deserve to know."

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Mission reports.

Names.

And one page that immediately caught my attention.

My name.

My hands started shaking.

I read the first line.

AGENT EVELYN CARTER.

Below it was a date.

A date six months before I joined the military.

I looked up.

"That's impossible."

Elena didn't react.

My father looked away.

"What is this?"

Nobody answered.

I grabbed the page.

"Why does this say I was recruited before I enlisted?"

Silence.

Daniel looked shocked.

"You weren't recruited?"

I looked at him.

"No."

I wasn't.

At least...

That's what I believed.

My father finally spoke.

"You were too young."

I turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

He looked broken.

"It means you don't remember everything."

The words made my blood run cold.

"What did you do?"

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"What did you do to me?"

My mother started crying.

Claire looked completely lost.

"Someone explain!"

Nobody listened.

Because everyone was looking at me.

At the folder.

At the truth that was slowly coming apart.

Elena spoke quietly.

"Richard didn't just hide your identity."

She looked at my father.

"He hid your memories."

The room stopped.

I stared at her.

"What?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"That isn't possible."

Elena looked at him.

"You'd be surprised what people can do when they have enough power."

I looked at my father.

My voice barely came out.

"Is that true?"

He didn't deny it.

That was worse.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

All those years.

All those memories.

What if they weren't complete?

What if pieces of my own life had been taken from me?

I turned the page.

There was a photograph attached.

A younger version of me.

Standing beside Elena.

Both of us wearing military uniforms.

But I had never seen that picture before.

On the back, someone had written a message.

Three words.

"Remember the night."

My hands went cold.

Because I remembered the night.

But only fragments.

Fire.

Noise.

Someone screaming my name.

Then nothing.

Elena looked at me.

"You were there when everything happened."

I looked at her.

"What happened?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at my father.

"Tell her."

My father stayed silent.

"Richard."

Still nothing.

Elena took a breath.

"Fine."

She looked at me.

"The mission wasn't a failure."

My heart started racing.

"What?"

She stepped closer.

"The mission succeeded."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Yes."

"People died."

Her eyes softened.

"Some did."

The way she said it made me freeze.

"Some?"

Elena nodded.

"Because the person you thought died that night..."

She looked toward my father.

"...was never the target."

Nobody moved.

Daniel whispered:

"Then who was?"

Elena looked directly at me.

And for the first time since she entered the room, I saw fear in her eyes.

"Your father."

The lights flickered again.

My phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

Only five words.

"Don't trust Elena Voss."

I looked up.

But Elena was already gone.

May you like

The front door was open.

And standing outside was someone I thought I would never see again.
