Chapter 5 - The Doctor Who Signed My Madness

The door opened.

Slowly.

Nobody moved.

Not Elena.

Not me.

Not even the person standing outside.

For one second, I thought Adrian was finally coming inside.

I thought he was done hiding.

But the person who stepped through the doorway was not my husband.

It was someone I never expected to see again.

Dr. Victoria Hale.

The woman who convinced everyone I was sick.

The woman who signed the papers that took away my freedom.

The woman who looked me in the eyes and told me my own memories could not be trusted.

She stood there calmly.

Like she belonged.

Like this was her room.

Her secret.

Her victory.

Elena immediately reached for her weapon.

"Don't move."

Victoria stopped.

Then she smiled.

Not a frightened smile.

Not a guilty one.

A confident one.

"Detective Ramirez, you should really look at all the facts before making assumptions."

I felt something inside me break.

Because that was exactly what Adrian always said.

Facts.

Evidence.

Reality.

They used those words like weapons.

Words that sounded intelligent.

Words that made people stop questioning them.

"You helped him," I whispered.

Victoria looked at me.

For a moment, her expression softened.

Almost like she felt sorry for me.

"I tried to help you."

I laughed.

It wasn't because anything was funny.

It was because I finally understood.

People like Victoria didn't have to scream.

They didn't have to threaten.

They only had to make you doubt yourself.

"You locked me away."

She tilted her head.

"No, Claire."

She took one step closer.

"You locked yourself away."

Elena moved between us.

"Stay where you are."

Victoria looked at her.

"Detective, you have no idea what you're walking into."

Elena pointed toward the monitor.

"We have video evidence of you working with Adrian Bennett."

Victoria glanced at the screen.

Then she looked back at Elena.

"And what exactly do you think that proves?"

Elena frowned.

"It proves you were involved."

"No."

Victoria calmly shook her head.

"It proves I was trying to stop something."

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

"What?"

She looked at me.

"Claire, Adrian is dangerous."

The words almost sounded real.

Almost.

But I knew better.

Because dangerous people often accused others first.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Victoria sighed.

"I expected you to say that."

She reached into her coat.

Elena immediately raised her weapon.

But Victoria only pulled out a small folder.

She placed it on the table.

"Open it."

I didn't move.

"Why?"

"Because this is the part Adrian never wanted you to remember."

Elena picked up the folder.

Inside were medical records.

My records.

Again.

More pages.

More notes.

More lies.

But then I saw something different.

A page dated two years earlier.

Before my hospitalization.

Before everything fell apart.

The title made my hands shake.

"Memory Assessment."

I looked at Victoria.

"What is this?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

"The first time Adrian tried to convince you that you were losing your mind."

My heart stopped.

"What are you talking about?"

Victoria looked away.

"Claire, your husband didn't suddenly become controlling six months ago."

She pointed at the documents.

"He started years earlier."

The pages described incidents I barely remembered.

Missing appointments.

Unexplained confusion.

Moments where I felt like time disappeared.

I had always blamed myself.

I thought I was exhausted.

I thought motherhood had overwhelmed me.

I thought maybe Adrian was right.

Maybe something really was wrong with me.

But now I saw something else.

A pattern.

A carefully created pattern.

Victoria continued.

"He was recording everything."

"Why?"

"Because he was building a case."

"For what?"

She looked at me.

"For the day he needed everyone to believe him."

My stomach turned.

The clinic.

The diagnosis.

The doctors.

The reports.

None of it had happened randomly.

It had been planned.

Then Elena found something.

A small detail buried at the bottom of one report.

A signature.

Not mine.

Not Victoria's.

Another name.

"Who is this?"

Victoria's face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Elena noticed too.

"Victoria."

She pointed at the name.

"Who is Daniel Cross?"

Nobody answered.

The silence was enough.

I looked at Victoria.

"You know him."

She didn't deny it.

"I knew him."

"Who is he?"

Victoria closed her eyes for a second.

Then she said:

"The person who taught Adrian how to do this."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"How long?"

Victoria looked at the floor.

"Longer than you think."

Elena turned back to the files.

"Where is he now?"

Victoria didn't answer.

That scared me.

Because people who had nothing to hide answered quickly.

People who were afraid chose silence.

Finally, she whispered:

"He disappeared."

"When?"

"The same week Claire was admitted."

My heart stopped.

The same week.

The same time.

The same moment my life disappeared.

The hidden room suddenly felt smaller.

Elena began searching through the files faster.

"We need to find everything connected to Daniel Cross."

I looked around.

The shelves.

The cameras.

The records.

All the people Adrian had watched.

All the lives he had collected.

Then I noticed something.

A small red folder hidden behind the monitor.

Unlike everything else, it had no name.

No label.

No date.

I reached for it.

Victoria immediately said:

"Don't open that."

Everyone stopped.

I looked at her.

"Why?"

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

I opened it.

Inside was one photograph.

My breath disappeared.

It was a picture of Emma.

Not recent.

Not from school.

Not from home.

A picture of her sitting in a hospital room.

She looked younger.

Maybe five years old.

On the back of the photo was a sentence.

Written in Adrian's handwriting.

"She was the first one who noticed."

I looked at Victoria.

"What does this mean?"

She didn't speak.

Elena took the photograph.

Her expression changed.

"Claire..."

"What?"

She turned the picture over.

There was another name written underneath Adrian's sentence.

A child's name.

Not Emma.

Not Lily.

Another child.

A child I had never heard of.

"Who is Sarah?" Elena asked.

I stared at the name.

Because something about it felt familiar.

Not from memory.

From somewhere else.

A place I couldn't reach.

A moment I couldn't remember.

Victoria suddenly stepped backward.

"You're not supposed to see that."

Elena looked at her.

"Why?"

Victoria's voice became quieter.

"Because that file is the reason Adrian never wanted Claire to remember."

I felt my heart race.

"Remember what?"

Victoria looked directly at me.

And for the first time since she entered the room...

She looked afraid.

"Claire, your first daughter didn't disappear."

The room went completely silent.

I couldn't breathe.

"My first daughter?"

Victoria nodded slowly.

"Adrian told you she died."

My hands went cold.

Because I had no memory of another daughter.

No memory of Sarah.

No memory of a hospital.

No memory of anything.

And then Victoria said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

"But she was alive."

Nobody spoke.

The camera above us continued recording.

The monitor flickered.

Then suddenly, another video file appeared.

A file that had not been there before.

The title was simple.

One word.

"CLAIRE."

Elena looked at me.

"Did you create this?"

I shook my head.

"No."

The video started playing.

A woman appeared on the screen.

A woman sitting in the same hidden room.

A woman holding a baby.

A woman who looked exactly like me six years younger.

Then the woman on the screen whispered:

May you like

"If you're watching this, Adrian already took her..."

And the video cut to black.
