Chapter 5 - The Room They Hid From Me

The hidden door opened completely.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

For eight years, that room had existed behind the wall of my father’s office.

Eight years.

And I had never known.

I stood there staring into the darkness beyond the doorway.

A part of me wanted to walk away.

To pretend I had never seen it.

Because sometimes the truth was more frightening than the lie.

But I was tired.

Tired of everyone knowing things about my life except me.

I stepped forward.

Gabriel followed behind me.

Richard immediately reacted.

“Clara, wait.”

I stopped.

Slowly turned around.

“What?”

My father looked at the room.

Then at me.

“You don’t understand what’s inside.”

I looked at him.

“That’s the problem, Dad.”

My voice was quiet.

“I never understood anything.”

Richard looked away.

And that told me everything.

The room was not a secret because it contained nothing.

It was a secret because it contained something he never wanted me to find.

I walked inside.

The air was different.

Old.

Still.

Like nobody had entered for years.

A small desk sat against the wall.

A locked metal cabinet stood in the corner.

And on the desk...

Was the black notebook.

My heart stopped.

I knew it before I touched it.

The same notebook from the photograph.

The same notebook my mother had held.

The same notebook that somehow connected everything.

I reached for it.

My hand shook.

Gabriel watched silently.

Even he seemed to understand this moment belonged to me.

I opened the cover.

The first page was filled with my mother’s handwriting.

My eyes moved across the words.

Clara,

If you are reading this, then they failed to keep you away from the truth.

My breathing became heavier.

I turned the page.

I expected secrets.

Money.

Business records.

Something connected to Gabriel.

But what I found was something much worse.

It was about me.

Eight years ago, I discovered that my father and Jonathan were moving company funds through hidden accounts.

I confronted them.

They denied everything.

Then they realized I had proof.

I stopped reading.

My fingers tightened around the notebook.

Proof.

I had proof.

But why didn’t I remember?

I turned another page.

The words became harder to read.

Because my mother had written them quickly.

Because she had been afraid.

She wrote that Richard had not always been this way.

That he had once been a good father.

But power changed him.

Money changed him.

And Jonathan...

Jonathan learned faster than anyone.

I looked up.

My brother stood near the doorway.

For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

“You knew about this.”

It wasn’t a question.

Jonathan didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew my mother wrote this.”

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

My heart sank.

“You knew everything.”

Jonathan looked at me.

“I knew enough.”

I laughed softly.

The sound didn’t feel like mine.

“You knew I wasn’t guilty.”

Silence.

“You knew I didn’t steal anything.”

Silence.

“You still gave me to him.”

Jonathan looked away.

And that was when I realized something.

Jonathan wasn’t sorry.

Not really.

He regretted being caught.

That was different.

Gabriel stepped closer.

“Why?”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Why what?”

“Why sacrifice your sister?”

Jonathan smiled.

“You think this was about Clara?”

Gabriel’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

Jonathan looked at the notebook in my hands.

“It was never about the money.”

The room became cold.

I looked at him.

“Then what was it about?”

Jonathan didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the desk.

He opened the bottom drawer.

Inside was another folder.

He pulled it out.

“This.”

He placed it on the desk.

Gabriel opened it first.

His eyes moved across the pages.

Then his expression changed.

“What is this?”

Jonathan smiled.

“The reason your money disappeared.”

I looked at Gabriel.

“What is it?”

He didn’t answer.

That scared me.

Because Gabriel Marino was not a man who became speechless.

He read the pages again.

Then looked at Richard.

“You knew.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I had no choice.”

Gabriel laughed once.

A cold, empty laugh.

“Everyone says that.”

He threw the folder onto the table.

Inside were contracts.

Names.

Transaction records.

And something I never expected.

My father had been working with someone else.

Someone who had been moving against Gabriel.

Someone powerful.

Someone hidden.

Martin looked at the documents.

“No.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“You recognize this?”

Martin’s face turned pale.

“I thought he was dead.”

The room froze.

“Who?” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at Gabriel.

Then Richard.

Then Jonathan.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

“Who is he?”

Richard finally spoke.

“Clara...”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Not another secret.”

My voice shook.

“I’m done being the only person in this room who doesn’t know what’s happening.”

Richard looked broken.

“The person behind all of this…”

He stopped.

A sound interrupted him.

A phone ringing.

Everyone turned.

It wasn’t Gabriel’s phone.

It wasn’t Jonathan’s.

It was mine.

I froze.

Because I didn’t have my phone.

The guards had taken everything from me when they brought me here.

Slowly, I reached into the hidden room.

The phone was sitting inside the metal cabinet.

Waiting.

Impossible.

I picked it up.

The screen showed one thing.

A message.

From an unknown number.

My hands became cold.

Gabriel noticed my expression.

“What does it say?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because the message was not for Gabriel.

Not for my father.

Not for Jonathan.

It was for me.

I opened it.

Only one sentence appeared.

"Clara, if you found the notebook, then you finally know your father wasn’t the one who betrayed you."

I stopped breathing.

A second message arrived.

Everyone watched as my eyes moved across the screen.

The next line was shorter.

More terrifying.

"Your brother is still lying."

Jonathan’s face changed.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

I slowly turned toward him.

“What did you do?”

Jonathan didn’t respond.

Because the phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID appeared.

May you like

And the name on the screen was one I had not seen in eight years...

Mom.
