Chapter 3 - The Man Who Sold His Own Daughter

The lights came back three seconds later.

But everything had already changed.

Because I had seen Gabriel Marino’s face.

And for the first time since I entered that room, the man everyone feared looked shocked.

Not angry.

Not suspicious.

Shocked.

I stared at him.

“What did the message say?”

Gabriel didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes remained fixed on his phone.

Then he slowly placed it on the table.

“My security team found your father.”

I felt my heart tighten.

“My father?”

Gabriel nodded.

“He’s here.”

The room became silent.

A thousand thoughts rushed through my head at once.

My father had abandoned me.

He had watched strangers take me away.

He had looked me in the eyes and said he was sorry.

So why was he here now?

Was he coming to save me?

Or was he coming to finish what he started?

Martin, the accountant, looked terrified.

“You can’t let him in.”

Gabriel turned toward him.

“Why?”

Martin’s face went pale.

“Because Richard didn’t come here for Clara.”

I looked at him.

“Then why did he come?”

Martin didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Martin had always been the calmest person in my father’s company.

He was the man who solved problems.

The man who never panicked.

But now his hands were shaking.

Gabriel picked up the documents from the table.

“You have ten seconds to explain.”

Martin swallowed.

“Richard knows the truth is about to come out.”

“What truth?” I asked.

Martin looked at me.

“The reason your brother blamed you.”

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.”

He opened his mouth.

But before he could speak, a loud sound came from outside.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Someone walking like they owned the place.

Everyone in the room froze.

Even Gabriel.

The door opened.

And my father walked inside.

Richard looked older than he had three days ago.

His expensive suit was still perfect.

His hair was still neatly styled.

But his eyes were different.

He looked like a man who had lost control of his own life.

His eyes immediately found mine.

“Clara.”

I didn’t move.

I didn’t cry.

I didn’t run toward him.

Because the person standing in front of me was not the father I remembered.

“You came.”

My voice sounded colder than I expected.

Richard looked away.

“I need to explain.”

I almost laughed.

“Explain?”

I looked at the guards.

“After you gave me away?”

His face tightened.

“I was trying to protect you.”

The words made something inside me burn.

“Protect me?”

I stepped closer.

“You handed me to a man you knew everyone feared.”

Richard looked at Gabriel.

“I didn’t know he would keep you here.”

Gabriel raised an eyebrow.

“You didn’t know?”

The room became tense.

Richard looked uncomfortable.

Because Gabriel wasn’t speaking like someone who believed him.

He was speaking like someone who already knew the answer.

“You told me she was responsible,” Gabriel said.

Richard stayed silent.

“You told me she controlled the accounts.”

Still silent.

“You told me she stole from me.”

Richard finally spoke.

“She had access.”

Gabriel smiled slightly.

A cold smile.

“Access is not guilt.”

My father looked at me.

“Clara, you don’t understand.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I understand perfectly.”

My voice became quieter.

“You needed someone to blame.”

Richard’s expression changed.

For a moment, I saw guilt.

Real guilt.

But then it disappeared.

“I did what I had to do.”

Those words hurt more than anything.

Because he still believed it.

He still believed sacrificing me was reasonable.

I looked at him.

“Did Jonathan tell you to do this?”

Richard didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I closed my eyes for a second.

My own brother.

My own father.

Both of them.

Gabriel walked toward the table.

“Richard.”

My father looked at him.

“Where is the money?”

Richard hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Gabriel’s expression hardened.

“Wrong answer.”

“I’m telling the truth.”

Martin suddenly spoke.

“No, you’re not.”

Everyone turned.

Martin looked terrified but determined.

“You know exactly where the money went.”

Richard stared at him.

“Be careful.”

Martin shook his head.

“I was careful for twelve years.”

He looked at me.

“I was careful while your father erased records.”

My breathing stopped.

“What?”

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“Martin.”

“No.”

Martin backed away.

“I’m done protecting you.”

He opened another folder.

“I found the transfers hidden under fake investment accounts.”

Gabriel took the folder.

He scanned the pages.

His expression became darker with every second.

Richard noticed.

And for the first time, he looked afraid.

“What did you find?” I asked.

Gabriel didn’t answer.

He looked at my father.

“You moved my money through your company.”

Richard shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

“You created fake accounts.”

“No.”

“You used Clara’s authorization profile.”

My father went silent.

I looked at him.

“Why?”

Richard looked at me.

And I saw something I never expected.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Clara, listen to me.”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“I spent eight years saving that company.”

My voice cracked.

“I fixed your mistakes.”

“I protected Jonathan.”

“I protected you.”

Richard lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“Then why?”

He didn’t answer.

Because the truth was worse than any lie.

Gabriel looked at Martin.

“There’s more.”

Martin nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“What?”

Martin looked at me.

“The offshore accounts weren’t created to hide stolen money.”

He paused.

“They were created to hide something else.”

I felt a chill.

“What else?”

Martin looked at Richard.

“Your father wasn’t stealing from Gabriel Marino.”

Silence.

“He was preparing to disappear.”

Nobody spoke.

My father’s face changed.

Because Martin had said the one thing he didn’t want anyone to know.

Gabriel stepped closer.

“Disappear from who?”

Martin looked at me.

And I knew immediately.

The answer involved me.

“Clara…”

I stared at him.

“What?”

Martin took a deep breath.

“Your father planned everything three months before he gave you to Gabriel.”

My stomach dropped.

Three months.

Not a mistake.

Not panic.

A plan.

Richard moved toward me.

“Clara, you need to understand—”

Gabriel stepped between us.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

But dangerous.

“She understands enough.”

My father looked at him.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.”

Gabriel smiled slightly.

“Then tell me.”

Richard said nothing.

Because he couldn’t.

The room stayed silent.

Then Gabriel’s phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

He answered.

A voice came through.

Quiet.

Urgent.

Gabriel listened for several seconds.

Then his expression changed.

He looked directly at me.

“Clara.”

My heart started racing.

“What?”

He slowly lowered the phone.

“The person who created the fake accounts…”

He paused.

“And the person who forged your signature…”

I waited.

Because I already knew the next words would destroy everything I believed.

Gabriel looked toward the open doorway behind me.

Someone was standing there.

Someone I knew.

Someone who should not have been there.

May you like

And then Gabriel whispered the name...

“Jonathan.”
