Chapter 2 - The Man Who Made Us Separate

The stranger placed a photograph on the hotel table and whispered: "Ask him why he destroyed your family."
Ethan Blackwood grabbed the old picture and found his own signature written on the back.
Three words were circled beneath it: "I never knew."
Ethan realized someone had been controlling the truth for years.
I watched Ethan stare at the photograph.
For the first time since I had known him, I saw something I never expected to see.
Fear.
Not the fear of losing money.
Not the fear of losing power.
The fear of discovering that everything he believed about his own life was built on a lie.
The stranger stood only a few feet away from us.
He looked older than I remembered.
His face carried the kind of exhaustion that came from holding secrets for too long.
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"Who are you?"
The man didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Leo.
Then he looked at me.
"I think you know exactly who I am."
My heart dropped.
Because I did.
I remembered him.
Not clearly.
Not from recent years.
But from the night everything between Ethan and me fell apart.
The night my entire future changed.
His name was Daniel Carter.
He was Ethan's former business partner.
And he was the last person I expected to see standing in front of us.
Two and a half years ago, Daniel was the man who delivered the message that destroyed my relationship.
The message that said Ethan had chosen someone else.
The message that told me Ethan didn't want to hear from me again.
At the time, I believed it.
Because why would someone lie about something so painful?
Why would someone destroy two people's lives for no reason?
But now Daniel was standing in front of Ethan with a photograph that suggested everything had been planned.
Ethan looked at me.
"Sarah..."
His voice was quiet.
"You knew him?"
I opened my mouth.
But no words came out.
Because how could I explain something I barely understood myself?
"I met him before."
Ethan looked at Daniel.
"When?"
Daniel finally spoke.
"The night you were supposed to marry her."
The air disappeared from my lungs.
The hotel lobby suddenly felt too small.
Ethan stared at him.
"What did you just say?"
Daniel looked directly at Ethan.
"You heard me."
The blonde woman beside Ethan stepped backward.
Her expression had changed completely.
The confidence she had when she entered the elevator was gone.
She looked at me differently now.
Not as an old girlfriend.
Not as a stranger.
But as someone connected to a secret she was just beginning to understand.
Ethan grabbed Daniel's arm.
"You need to explain."
Daniel didn't move.
"You want the truth?"
Ethan's grip tightened.
"Yes."
Daniel looked at Leo.
Then back at Ethan.
"Then you need to know what happened the night you left her."
My chest tightened.
I didn't want to hear it again.
Because that night was still alive inside me.
The phone call.
The accusations.
The silence afterward.
The moment Ethan walked away without letting me explain.
I had replayed that night thousands of times.
Every word.
Every second.
Every painful detail.
But maybe I had never known the whole story.
Daniel reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out another envelope.
Old.
Folded.
Worn around the edges.
He handed it to Ethan.
"This was supposed to reach you two years ago."
Ethan looked at the envelope.
His name was written across the front.
His handwriting.
Not Daniel's.
Not mine.
His.
Ethan looked at me.
"Why do I have a letter from myself?"
I felt my stomach drop.
Because I had never seen that envelope before.
"I don't know."
Daniel watched us carefully.
"Because someone made sure neither of you received what the other wrote."
Ethan slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
His eyes moved across the words.
I couldn't see everything.
Only fragments.
Sarah.
I'm sorry.
I made a mistake.
Please wait for me.
Ethan stopped reading.
His hands began shaking.
"No..."
The word came out like a whisper.
I looked at him.
"What does it say?"
He didn't answer.
His eyes stayed fixed on the paper.
Then he looked at me.
And I knew.
Whatever was written there changed something.
Because Ethan wasn't looking at me with anger anymore.
He was looking at me with regret.
"I wrote this the night I left."
My throat tightened.
"You wrote that?"
He nodded slowly.
"I thought you never answered."
I stared at him.
"I never received anything."
Silence.
The kind of silence that only exists when two people realize they have been grieving the same loss from opposite sides.
Ethan looked at Daniel.
"Who stopped this from reaching her?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He looked toward the elevator.
Then toward the hotel entrance.
Like he was checking if someone was watching.
"Ethan, this isn't just about a letter."
His voice lowered.
"Someone wanted you separated from Sarah."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"Who?"
Daniel looked at me.
And I immediately knew he was afraid to say it.
Because whoever it was...
They had power.
They had access.
And they had been close enough to manipulate everything.
Daniel slowly spoke.
"Someone inside your family."
Ethan froze.
The blonde woman beside him covered her mouth.
"No..."
I looked at her.
She seemed genuinely shocked.
Which meant she might not know either.
Ethan looked back at Daniel.
"My family?"
Daniel nodded.
"The person who convinced you Sarah betrayed you."
My hands tightened around Leo.
Because I remembered that accusation.
The one that destroyed everything.
The one that made Ethan believe I had hidden something from him.
But I had never understood where it came from.
Ethan looked at me.
"What did they tell me?"
I hesitated.
Because saying it out loud felt like reopening an old wound.
"They told you I was leaving you for someone else."
Ethan closed his eyes.
"I remember."
His voice was barely audible.
"They showed me messages."
My heart stopped.
"What messages?"
Ethan looked at me.
"Messages from your phone."
I shook my head immediately.
"I never sent those."
"I know."
The way he said it hurt more than anger would have.
Because he believed me now.
After all this time.
Daniel stepped closer.
"They weren't from her phone."
Ethan looked at him.
"What?"
"They were created."
Daniel pulled out another document.
A copy.
A report.
"Someone cloned Sarah's number."
I felt dizzy.
Because for years, I thought Ethan hated me because of something I had done.
But now I was learning someone had built an entire lie around us.
Ethan took the document.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then he stopped.
A name appeared at the bottom.
His face changed.
I noticed immediately.
"Ethan?"
He didn't respond.
"Who is it?"
He slowly lowered the paper.
His expression was empty.
Almost impossible to read.
Because sometimes the truth hurts more than the lie.
"Sarah..."
I looked at him.
"Who did this?"
He looked at the document again.
Then at me.
And when he finally spoke, his voice was broken.
"It was someone who knew everything about us."
Leo started moving in my arms.
I held him closer.
Ethan looked at his son.
Then back at the name.
"Someone who was there the day Leo was born."
My blood ran cold.
Because only a few people knew that day.
Only a few people had been close enough.
Daniel suddenly looked toward the hotel hallway.
His face changed.
"Wait."
Ethan turned.
"What?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He walked quickly toward the elevator.
Like he had just realized something.
I followed his eyes.
The elevator doors were closing.
But before they shut completely...
A woman's hand stopped them.
And the person standing inside the elevator looked directly at me.
It was someone I knew.
Someone who should have been nowhere near us.
May you like
Someone who had been gone for two years.
And then she stepped out and said my name...
