Chapter 1 - The Eyes That Revealed The Secret

A little boy reached toward a man in a black suit and whispered: "Papa..."
Ethan Blackwood stepped out of the elevator and saw a forgotten hospital bracelet inside Sarah Jenkins' handbag.
On the back of the bracelet, four words were written: "Leo Blackwood. Father: Ethan."
Ethan suddenly realized this was never just a coincidence.
I never imagined my past would find me in the middle of a Manhattan hotel lobby.
Especially not while I was holding the child Ethan Blackwood never knew existed.
My name is Sarah Jenkins.
And for two and a half years, I had carried a secret that was never supposed to be revealed like this.
I had known Ethan was in New York.
I had seen his name in business magazines.
I had watched his company grow from a small investment firm into one of the most powerful financial groups in the city.
But I never expected to see him standing in front of me.
Not with his hand around another woman's waist.
Not with a smile on his face.
And not while my son was looking directly into his eyes.
The elevator doors opened slowly.
I stepped forward, holding Leo against my chest.
My son was eighteen months old.
He was small enough that his legs barely reached my waist, but his personality was already bigger than the entire world around him.
He loved looking at people.
He loved smiling at strangers.
And he had a habit of reaching toward anyone who made him feel familiar.
I had always wondered why he had those green eyes.
The same deep green eyes that belonged to Ethan.
The same eyes I had fallen in love with years ago.
I had spent so long trying to convince myself that Leo's eyes were just a coincidence.
That maybe genetics worked in mysterious ways.
That maybe I could keep my son away from the complicated world Ethan came from.
But the second those elevator doors opened...
I knew I had been lying to myself.
Ethan was standing inside.
He was wearing a perfectly fitted black suit.
His dark hair was styled exactly the way I remembered.
His expression was relaxed.
Happy.
He was laughing at something the woman beside him had said.
The woman beside him.
His fiancée.
I recognized her immediately.
A beautiful blonde woman wearing a red evening dress and a diamond necklace that probably cost more than my entire apartment.
Her hand rested on Ethan's arm.
She looked like she belonged beside him.
Like she had always belonged there.
Then Ethan looked up.
And everything changed.
His smile disappeared.
The laughter stopped.
His eyes moved from my face...
To Leo.
Then back to my face.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The entire hotel lobby seemed to disappear.
Because Ethan wasn't looking at my son like a stranger.
He was looking at him like he was seeing a piece of himself.
Leo stared back.
Then he reached out his tiny hand.
His fingers grabbed the edge of Ethan's suit jacket.
And he whispered the one word I had spent years fearing.
"Papa..."
Ethan froze.
The woman beside him looked confused.
Her eyes moved between us.
"What did he just call you?"
I tightened my arms around Leo.
I didn't know what to say.
Because every possible answer would destroy someone's life.
Ethan slowly stepped out of the elevator.
His eyes never left my son.
"Sarah..."
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Just lost.
"Who is he?"
I looked down at Leo.
He was smiling at Ethan.
Like he already knew him.
Like some part of him recognized the man I had tried so hard to forget.
I swallowed.
"His name is Leo."
Ethan stared at him.
"Leo..."
He repeated the name quietly.
Then his face changed.
I saw the moment the pieces started connecting.
The green eyes.
The age.
The timing.
The memories.
Two years ago, Ethan had left me.
Not because he hated me.
Not because he didn't love me.
But because he believed I had betrayed him.
A misunderstanding had destroyed everything between us.
A lie had been told.
A truth had been hidden.
And when Ethan walked away, I discovered I was pregnant.
I wanted to tell him.
I tried.
I wrote messages.
I called.
I even went to his office.
But every time, something stopped me.
His assistant told me he was unavailable.
His phone number changed.
His family refused to let me near him.
Eventually, I convinced myself that maybe Ethan was better without me.
Maybe Leo was better without a father who didn't want us.
But seeing Ethan now...
Seeing the pain on his face...
I realized I had been wrong about one thing.
Ethan never knew.
He never had the chance to choose.
The blonde woman stepped closer.
"Ethan, what's happening?"
He ignored her.
His eyes stayed on me.
"How old is he?"
My grip tightened around Leo.
"Eighteen months."
The color slowly disappeared from Ethan's face.
Because he knew.
He counted.
I watched him calculate the months.
The days.
The exact moment when everything changed.
His voice became quieter.
"Sarah..."
I looked at him.
"Was he mine?"
The question hurt more than I expected.
Because I had imagined this moment thousands of times.
But never like this.
Never in front of another woman.
Never with Leo reaching for him.
I didn't answer immediately.
I couldn't.
Because saying yes would open a door that could never be closed again.
Ethan took another step closer.
His fiancée looked between us.
Confusion became fear.
She finally understood that this wasn't a random meeting.
This wasn't two old friends reconnecting.
This was something much bigger.
"Sarah."
Ethan's voice broke slightly.
"Look at me."
I looked at him.
"I deserve the truth."
The hotel lobby became silent.
People walked past us.
Nobody knew that an entire family was being created and destroyed in that one moment.
I wanted to tell him everything.
I wanted to explain every night I spent alone.
Every doctor's appointment.
Every moment Leo asked about the man in the old photos.
But before I could speak...
Leo reached toward Ethan again.
And Ethan slowly lifted his hand.
He didn't touch him.
He stopped inches away.
Like he was afraid this wasn't real.
Like he was afraid he would wake up.
Then he whispered:
"Those are my eyes..."
I looked away.
Because hearing him say it made my heart break.
The man I loved had finally found his son.
But he had found him two years too late.
Or maybe...
Exactly when someone wanted him to.
Because as Ethan stared at Leo, his expression suddenly changed.
His eyes moved past me.
Toward the entrance of the hotel.
Someone was watching us.
A man in a dark coat stood near the doorway.
And the moment Ethan saw him...
His face went pale.
Because Ethan knew him.
The man slowly raised his phone.
A message appeared on Ethan's screen.
One sentence.
"Ask Sarah why she never told you the real reason I made you leave her."
Ethan looked at me.
Then at the stranger.
May you like
And before I could say anything...
The man walked toward us.
