Chapter 6 - The Evidence Daniel Never Wanted Found

The address on the paper belonged to an abandoned building outside Charleston.

I knew the moment I saw it.

The kind of place people forgot existed.

Old brick walls.

Broken windows.

A place where secrets could disappear.

The note had only one instruction.

Come alone.

I should have ignored it.

I should have called Daniel.

I should have called the police.

But after everything that happened, I knew one thing.

The truth had been hidden from me for five years.

And I was done waiting for someone else to reveal it.

I left before sunrise.

Lily was still asleep.

That was the hardest part.

Leaving her behind.

Every step away from that room felt wrong.

Because for five years, my entire life had been about protecting her.

Keeping her safe.

Making sure nobody could take her away again.

But now I needed answers.

Not just for me.

For her.

Because Lily deserved to know why she grew up without a father.

And Daniel deserved to know why someone stole five years from him.

The building was exactly what I expected.

Empty.

Silent.

Forgotten.

I parked my car across the street and watched.

Ten minutes passed.

Nothing.

Fifteen minutes.

Still nothing.

I almost convinced myself it was a mistake.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

"Second floor. Room 204."

I stared at the screen.

My hands tightened around the phone.

Someone was watching me.

Someone knew I had arrived.

I walked inside.

The stairs creaked under my feet.

Every sound felt louder than it should.

I reached the second floor.

Room 204 was at the end of the hallway.

The door was slightly open.

I stopped.

Because I remembered something.

Five years ago, when everything started falling apart, I had trusted the wrong people.

I believed their words.

I believed their promises.

I believed Daniel didn't care.

I believed his family wanted to help.

I was wrong.

So this time, I pushed the door open carefully.

Inside was a small room.

An old table.

A broken chair.

And a box sitting in the middle.

My name was written on it.

Emily Carter.

My heart started racing.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

Daniel's father.

Richard.

I opened the box.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Medical records.

Messages.

Everything someone had spent years trying to hide.

The first document I picked up was dated five years earlier.

The day Lily was born.

My hands shook.

Because it wasn't just a birth record.

It was a report.

A private investigation report.

Someone had been watching me.

Watching Daniel.

Watching our marriage.

I turned the page.

And there it was.

The name.

The person who started everything.

I knew the name.

I had seen it before.

But I never imagined that person was involved.

Daniel's mother.

Evelyn Mercer.

But the report showed something I didn't know.

She wasn't acting alone.

There were payments.

Phone records.

Meetings.

A list of people who helped her.

And near the bottom of the page was a name that made my stomach drop.

Victoria Hale.

Daniel's current partner.

I sat down.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

Victoria wasn't just someone who appeared after my divorce.

She had been there before.

Watching.

Waiting.

Planning.

I kept reading.

The next document was a letter.

A letter from Richard.

It explained everything.

He discovered Evelyn's plan after finding the forged divorce papers.

He discovered she had manipulated Daniel.

He discovered she had convinced everyone that Emily had abandoned him.

But there was one thing he couldn't prove.

The accident.

The crash.

The night I almost died.

Richard believed it wasn't random.

Someone had arranged it.

Someone wanted me gone.

Someone wanted Lily gone.

I stopped reading.

Because one sentence caught my attention.

"The person responsible was not trying to kill Emily."

My heart froze.

I read the next line.

"They were trying to make Daniel believe she was dead."

I didn't understand.

Why would someone want Daniel to think I was dead?

Why not just separate us?

Why go that far?

Then I found another photograph.

It was old.

Taken from a security camera.

A woman standing near my car.

The night of the accident.

I moved closer.

Because I knew that person.

The face was blurry.

But the clothing.

The posture.

The necklace.

I recognized it.

My breathing stopped.

Because the woman standing beside my car that night was...

Victoria.

I dropped the photograph.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Victoria.

The woman who smiled at me at the wedding.

The woman who stood beside Daniel.

The woman who looked like she had everything I lost.

She had been there from the beginning.

I grabbed my phone.

I needed to call Daniel.

I needed to tell him.

But before I could unlock the screen, another message appeared.

Unknown number.

"Don't trust Richard."

I froze.

Another message came immediately.

"He's not the person who saved you."

My heart started pounding.

Then a third message appeared.

A photograph.

A recent photograph.

Taken inside my house.

My bedroom.

While I was gone.

The caption below it said:

"Look behind Lily's bed."

I didn't think.

I ran.

I don't remember leaving the building.

I don't remember driving.

I only remember one thought.

Lily.

Someone had been inside my home.

Someone had been near my daughter.

When I arrived, the front door was locked.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

I rushed upstairs.

"Lily?"

No answer.

My heart nearly stopped.

Then I heard a voice.

"Mommy?"

I turned.

Lily was standing at the end of the hallway.

Safe.

Alive.

But she was holding something.

A small envelope.

"Someone left this for you."

I took it from her.

My hands were shaking.

"Who?"

She looked confused.

"The man who said he knew Daddy."

I looked toward the front door.

Nobody was there.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

Not of Lily.

Not of Daniel.

Of me.

Five years ago.

The night I was in the hospital.

And written on the back were six words.

"I was there when you woke up."

I turned the photograph over.

And underneath the sentence was a name.

A name I had never expected.

Because the person who wrote it was the same person Daniel had buried three years earlier...

And then someone knocked on my front door.

Three times.

Slow.

May you like

Calm.

Like they knew I was already inside.
