Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The door opened.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the person standing there was impossible.

Daniel dropped the letter from his hand.

The paper floated to the floor.

His face turned pale.

"That can't be..."

The man standing outside looked older.

Tired.

Different.

But I knew him.

Everyone in that room knew him.

Because his photograph had been on a memorial wall for three years.

Because Daniel had attended his funeral.

Because everyone believed he was gone forever.

Daniel whispered one name.

"Dad?"

I watched Daniel Mercer stare at the man standing in the doorway.

His father.

Richard Mercer.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man whose funeral Daniel had attended.

The man whose absence had shaped everything that happened after.

But there he was.

Alive.

Standing in front of us.

And suddenly, every secret from the last five years became even darker.

Because if Richard Mercer had been alive...

Then someone had lied about much more than Lily.

I remembered the first time I met Richard.

It was before Daniel and I got married.

He was nothing like the rest of the Mercer family.

Daniel was controlled.

Evelyn was calculating.

Victoria was charming in a way that always felt rehearsed.

But Richard was different.

He was quiet.

Observant.

The kind of person who listened more than he spoke.

At our wedding, he pulled me aside.

"You love my son."

I smiled.

"I do."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said something I never forgot.

"Good. Because Daniel has spent his entire life pretending he doesn't need anyone."

I laughed.

But Richard didn't.

"He does."

At the time, I thought he was just being a father.

I didn't know he was warning me.

Daniel stood frozen.

His eyes never left Richard.

"I watched them bury you."

Richard lowered his head.

"I know."

"You let me think you were dead."

"I had no choice."

Daniel laughed once.

A broken sound.

"No choice?"

He stepped forward.

"You disappeared for three years."

Richard looked at him.

"I was trying to protect you."

Those words again.

Protect.

Everyone used that word.

Evelyn.

Victoria.

Now Richard.

I was tired of hearing it.

Because every time someone said they were protecting us, they were actually hiding something.

I stood up.

"Protect him from what?"

Richard looked at me.

And for the first time since he entered the room, his expression changed.

Because he knew exactly who I was.

"Emily."

His voice was quiet.

"I never wanted you involved."

My heart tightened.

"You knew."

Nobody spoke.

Richard looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

"Yes."

Daniel looked between us.

"What do you mean, you knew?"

Richard didn't answer immediately.

And that silence was enough.

Daniel's expression changed.

"You knew about her?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The room exploded.

"What?"

Daniel stepped back.

"You knew I had a daughter?"

Richard looked devastated.

"I found out after Emily gave birth."

I looked at him.

"Then why didn't you tell him?"

His eyes filled with regret.

"Because I tried."

That stopped me.

"What?"

Richard reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

"I wrote everything down."

He placed it on the table.

"The truth about Lily. The truth about your divorce. The truth about what happened."

Daniel grabbed it.

"Why didn't I get this?"

Richard looked at him.

"Because someone made sure you never saw it."

The room became silent.

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a stack of papers.

Old.

Folded.

Damaged.

Like someone had tried to destroy them.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His hands started shaking.

"What is this?"

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel looked up.

"This is my divorce agreement."

I frowned.

"What?"

Daniel turned the paper toward me.

I walked closer.

And then I saw it.

A signature.

My name.

My handwriting.

Except it wasn't mine.

My stomach dropped.

"That's not my signature."

Daniel looked at me.

"I thought..."

"You thought I signed this?"

He looked away.

And that hurt more than I expected.

Because even now, after everything, there was still a part of him that believed I was capable of walking away from him.

Richard interrupted.

"Daniel, someone forged her signature."

Daniel stared at him.

"Who?"

Richard looked toward Evelyn.

Nobody moved.

But everyone noticed.

Evelyn started crying.

I had spent five years wondering how my marriage ended.

I blamed myself.

I blamed Daniel.

I blamed the things we said.

The things we didn't say.

But the truth was worse.

Someone had built a wall between us.

Piece by piece.

Lie by lie.

And we had both been trapped behind it.

"Mom."

Daniel's voice was cold.

Evelyn looked up.

"Tell me."

She said nothing.

"Tell me why."

Her hands shook.

"I was trying to save you."

Daniel stared at her.

"From what?"

Evelyn looked at Lily.

Then at me.

Then at Richard.

"I knew about the pregnancy."

My breathing stopped.

Daniel looked shocked.

"You knew before I did?"

Evelyn nodded.

"I found the doctor's report."

My voice came out quiet.

"You stole it."

Evelyn looked at me.

"I took it because I knew what would happen."

"What would happen?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Daniel would choose you."

The words shocked me.

Not because they were impossible.

Because they sounded like the truth.

Evelyn continued.

"My son was already falling apart after the divorce. I knew if he found out about Lily, he would come back to you."

Daniel looked disgusted.

"And that was a bad thing?"

Evelyn didn't answer.

Richard did.

"Because she didn't want Emily back."

Everyone looked at him.

Richard's voice became heavier.

"She wanted control."

Daniel walked away from everyone.

He looked destroyed.

The confident man from earlier was gone.

The man who had mocked me.

The man who believed he knew everything.

He was just a father realizing he had missed five years of his daughter's life.

He looked at Lily.

"I'm sorry."

Lily looked up at him.

She didn't understand.

She only saw a stranger.

A stranger who looked like he was about to cry.

Daniel slowly lowered himself to her height.

"Hi."

Lily looked at me.

I nodded.

"It's okay."

She looked back at him.

"Are you my daddy?"

That question broke something inside the room.

Daniel covered his mouth.

And for the first time, I saw him cry.

Not because he lost something.

Because he finally understood what he had lost.

Later that evening, after the wedding guests left and the venue became quiet, Richard asked me to speak privately.

I didn't want to.

But I needed answers.

We sat outside near the garden.

The same place where the wedding photos had been taken hours earlier.

Everything looked beautiful.

But nothing felt beautiful anymore.

"Why did you really disappear?"

I asked.

Richard looked down.

"Because I found out something about my family."

"What?"

He took a long breath.

"Daniel's divorce wasn't the only thing that was planned."

My heart tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Richard looked at me.

"The night Lily was born..."

He stopped.

"The night you thought you were alone..."

I waited.

"Someone else was in that hospital."

I felt cold.

"Who?"

Richard looked toward the building.

"The person who helped Evelyn hide everything."

I stood up.

"Who?"

Richard reached into his pocket.

He pulled out an old hospital photograph.

My hands shook when I saw it.

Because I recognized the room.

I recognized the bed.

I recognized Lily.

But I didn't recognize the person standing beside her.

Until Richard turned the photograph over.

There was a name written on the back.

A name I had never expected to see.

And the moment I read it, my phone started ringing from an unknown number.

The screen showed only one word.

"EMILY."

I answered.

May you like

And the voice on the other end whispered:

"Your daughter was never the only secret they hid from you."
