Chapter 6 - The Betrayal at Vale House

Fire alarms screamed.

Claire grabbed Lily.

Adrian took Evelyn’s bracelet and letter.

Ethan ran toward the service corridor.

“Main exits are electronically locked!”

“Kitchen?” Claire shouted.

“Smoke’s coming from there.”

Samuel pointed toward the ballroom.

“Loading doors.”

They ran.

Smoke thickened.

Lily coughed.

Adrian lifted her into his arms.

Claire heard glass break behind them.

Marco appeared through the haze.

“This way!”

He had found an emergency release.

The ballroom doors opened.

Cold night air rushed in.

They spilled into the alley.

Fire engines approached.

Adrian looked around.

“Julian?”

No answer.

Samuel shook his head.

“Gone.”

Claire did not know whether that meant traitor or ally.

Neither did Adrian.

Firefighters arrived.

Police followed.

For once, Adrian did not leave before they came.

He handed over Nicholas’s underground room.

The servers.

The files.

Everything.

Claire noticed Samuel watching him.

“You understand what that means?” Samuel asked.

“Yes.”

“You may incriminate yourself.”

Adrian looked at Lily.

“I’m done hiding things from her.”

It was the first decision Claire believed might save him.

At three in the morning, they went to Vale House.

Not because it was safe.

Because Adrian wanted to finish this where it began.

Federal agents secured the property after Samuel contacted a prosecutor he trusted.

Nicholas had disappeared.

Mercer too.

Julian remained missing.

Marco received stitches and refused hospitalization.

Claire sat with Lily in the kitchen.

Ethan worked on the bracelet with equipment brought from his apartment.

Adrian stood across the room reading Evelyn’s letter.

Claire tried not to watch.

She failed.

His hands shook.

After several minutes, he folded the letter.

“What did she say?” Claire asked softly.

Adrian stared at the page.

“That she loved me.”

His voice broke slightly.

“And that love wasn’t enough to make me see what my life was doing to our daughter.”

Claire said nothing.

“She wanted to leave.”

That surprised her.

“With Lily?”

“Yes.”

“Were you going to let her?”

“I didn’t know.”

He smiled bitterly.

“I suppose that answers the question.”

Claire looked at Lily.

“She still loved you.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she left you the truth.”

Adrian met her eyes.

For the first time, neither looked away.

Ethan interrupted.

“I’ve got something.”

They gathered around the laptop.

The bracelet contained four audio files.

The first recorded Evelyn confronting Julian.

His voice was clear.

“I moved the money because Mercer threatened my son.”

Evelyn replied, “Then help me stop him.”

The second recorded Mercer.

“You don’t understand who Nicholas is.”

Evelyn:

“I understand exactly who he is.”

The third was difficult to hear.

Footsteps.

A door.

Nicholas’s voice.

“You should have stayed out of this.”

Then Evelyn:

“You should have stayed dead.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

The fourth file began inside a bedroom.

Lily’s breathing was audible.

She must have been nearby.

Evelyn spoke.

“Daniel, what did you put in Adrian’s medication?”

Mercer answered.

“Nothing fatal.”

Nicholas:

“Not yet.”

Adrian’s hand tightened.

Then Evelyn said something that changed everything.

“You’re not taking his company. You’re not taking my daughter. And Julian already sent copies to the authorities.”

Adrian looked up.

“Copies?”

Samuel stared.

“If Julian sent them, why was Nicholas never arrested?”

“Because he didn’t send them,” Adrian said.

Or he did and someone intercepted them.

The recording continued.

A struggle.

Glass breaking.

Evelyn gasping.

Mercer saying, “Her heart—”

Nicholas answering, “Then the death certificate writes itself.”

Lily began crying.

Adrian stopped the recording immediately.

He went to her.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily shook her head.

She pointed to the computer.

“No.”

Adrian understood.

“You want us to finish?”

Lily nodded.

He hesitated.

Then pressed play.

Footsteps.

A child’s sob.

Evelyn whispered:

“Lily, run.”

Then Nicholas’s voice.

“Get the girl.”

Julian shouted from farther away.

“Don’t touch her!”

A door slammed.

The recording ended.

Adrian stared.

“Julian tried to protect her.”

Claire nodded.

“That’s why she pointed at him.”

“What?”

Claire finally understood.

“Not because he hurt Evelyn.”

She looked at Lily.

“You were pointing because he knew.”

Lily nodded.

Adrian sat down slowly.

All night, the child had been warning them about Julian.

But not because he was the killer.

Because Julian was the one adult who had seen enough to expose the killer.

And he was in danger too.

Samuel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“They found Julian.”

“Where?” Adrian asked.

“Vale House gate.”

Everyone turned.

Marco drew his weapon.

A guard entered.

“He came alone.”

“Bring him in.”

Julian walked into the kitchen five minutes later.

His shirt was bloody.

He looked exhausted.

Adrian did not move.

“Where were you?”

“Following Mercer.”

“Where is he?”

“Here.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

Julian looked toward the ceiling.

“Somewhere inside the house.”

Adrian stood.

“How?”

“Tunnel.”

Samuel stared.

“There is no tunnel.”

Julian laughed weakly.

“Nicholas built the house.”

Everyone went silent.

Julian continued.

“It runs from the old carriage building to the wine cellar.”

Adrian looked at Lily.

“Get her out.”

Lily shook her head.

“No argument.”

She grabbed Claire.

Adrian looked at Claire.

Claire understood what Lily meant.

“I’m going with her.”

Ethan joined.

Federal agents began moving them toward the rear.

Then the power failed.

Complete darkness.

A shot echoed upstairs.

Someone screamed.

Emergency lamps activated.

The back door slammed shut.

Mercer’s voice came over the intercom.

“Adrian.”

Adrian looked up.

“Come to Evelyn’s room.”

Claire felt Lily freeze.

Mercer continued.

“Come alone, or I start with the people in your kitchen.”

Adrian handed Marco his gun.

“No.”

Marco grabbed him.

“Boss.”

“If I don’t go, he kills someone.”

“He’ll kill you.”

“Maybe.”

Lily ran to Adrian.

She clung to him.

He held her tightly.

Then she pulled back.

Her mouth moved.

No sound.

Claire crouched beside her.

“It’s okay.”

Lily tried again.

One breath.

One broken syllable.

“D…”

Adrian stared.

Lily fought through the fear.

“Dad.”

Nobody moved.

It was the first word she had spoken in six months.

Adrian dropped to his knees.

Lily touched his face.

“Don’t.”

His eyes filled.

Claire had never seen a man look simultaneously destroyed and saved.

“I have to.”

Lily shook her head violently.

Then she pointed toward Evelyn’s bedroom.

She drew a square in the air.

A hidden room.

Julian understood.

“The closet.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What?”

“Evelyn once told me Nicholas had access to the house through places you didn’t know.”

Claire remembered the chair.

The basement.

The surveillance.

Everything Nicholas did depended on watching unseen.

“He won’t be waiting in the bedroom,” she said.

“He’ll be behind it.”

Adrian looked at Claire.

“What are you thinking?”

Claire glanced at the security panel.

Then Ethan.

“Can you restore one camera?”

“Maybe.”

“Which?”

She pointed upstairs.

“The hallway outside Evelyn’s room.”

Ethan worked.

Thirty seconds.

Forty.

The monitor flickered.

A hallway appeared.

Empty.

Then Mercer stepped into view.

Gun in hand.

He entered Evelyn’s room.

But a second shadow appeared behind him.

An older man with a cane.

Nicholas.

Adrian stared.

Julian whispered, “They’re both here.”

Then a third figure crossed the camera.

Everyone froze.

Samuel stepped closer.

“That’s impossible.”

The third figure wore a federal agent’s jacket.

He opened Evelyn’s bedroom door for Nicholas.

Claire looked toward the agents guarding the front entrance.

One man was missing.

Nicholas had someone inside law enforcement.

Adrian reached for Marco’s gun.

Claire stopped him.

“No.”

“What?”

“They want you upstairs.”

“Yes.”

“So give them what they expect.”

She looked at Julian.

Then Marco.

Then Ethan.

A plan formed.

Dangerous.

Simple.

Maybe their only chance.

Ten minutes later, Adrian walked alone toward Evelyn’s bedroom.

The door stood open.

He entered.

Mercer sat beside the bed.

Nicholas stood near the window.

The corrupt agent waited behind the door.

Nicholas smiled.

“Finally.”

Adrian raised his hands.

“No gun.”

“Good boy.”

Mercer stepped closer.

“You should have signed.”

Adrian looked toward the bed where Evelyn had died.

“I should have listened to my wife.”

Nicholas laughed.

“Yes.”

Adrian’s gaze moved toward the closet mirror.

A tiny red light blinked.

Ethan had restored the hidden camera.

Everything was transmitting.

Not just to the kitchen.

Samuel had connected it directly to federal command.

Nicholas did not know.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You killed Evelyn because she found the records.”

Nicholas smiled.

“She died because she forgot who built this family.”

“And you poisoned me.”

“Slowly.”

“Mercer?”

The doctor shrugged.

“You were never supposed to die until the transfer was complete.”

Adrian looked at the corrupt agent.

“And him?”

Nicholas laughed.

“Everyone has a price.”

Behind the wall, something clicked.

Nicholas frowned.

Too late.

Marco and Julian entered through the concealed passage Lily remembered.

Mercer spun.

Julian tackled him.

The corrupt agent raised his weapon.

Marco disarmed him.

Nicholas ran toward the window.

Adrian caught him.

Father and son crashed against the desk.

Nicholas struck Adrian with his cane.

Adrian fell.

Nicholas reached for a hidden pistol.

Then a small voice sounded from the doorway.

“Stop.”

Everyone froze.

Lily stood there.

Claire behind her.

Nicholas stared at his granddaughter.

Lily was trembling.

But she spoke again.

“You hurt Mommy.”

Nicholas’s face changed.

“Lily—”

“You lied.”

He stepped toward her.

Adrian rose.

“Don’t.”

Federal agents thundered up the stairs.

Nicholas looked around.

For the first time in Claire’s presence, he appeared old.

Not powerful.

Not legendary.

Just cornered.

The lead agent entered.

“Nicholas Vale, hands where I can see them.”

Nicholas slowly raised his hands.

Claire thought it was over.

Then Mercer laughed from the floor.

Everyone turned.

He held something small between his fingers.

A remote.

Adrian recognized it too late.

Mercer pressed the button.

A deep explosion shook the house.

The floor moved beneath them.

May you like

Smoke burst through the hallway.

And from somewhere below came Ethan’s scream.
