Chapter 4 - The Man Behind the Chair

Adrian moved before Julian could raise his gun.
He shoved Claire and Ethan behind a concrete pillar.
Marco appeared from the lower ramp at the same moment, striking one of Julian’s men from behind.
The garage erupted into chaos.
Claire dropped beside Ethan and ripped the tape from his mouth.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Can you walk?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“They took me from the apartment. Then they realized I knew electronics.”
“What did they want?”
“The bracelet.”
“Did you see it?”
Ethan nodded.
“It wasn’t jewelry.”
Claire stared.
“What?”
“The clasp was a transmitter housing. Old custom work.”
“Could you access it?”
“They made me try.”
“And?”
“It was encrypted.”
Gunfire cracked across the garage.
Claire flinched.
Ethan grabbed her arm.
“We need to leave.”
Adrian appeared.
Blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow.
“Marco has Julian pinned.”
“Lily,” Claire said.
His face tightened.
“I know.”
He looked at Ethan.
“You good?”
Ethan nodded uncertainly.
Adrian handed Claire car keys.
“Lower level. Black sedan. Get him out.”
“You?”
“I’m getting Julian.”
“You heard Samuel.”
“That’s exactly why I need Julian alive.”
Claire wanted to argue.
Then she saw his eyes.
This was a father now.
Not a crime boss.
“Come back,” she said.
Adrian looked surprised.
So was she.
Then he nodded.
Claire and Ethan ran.
They reached the sedan.
Ethan climbed inside.
Claire drove.
“Where?”
He asked.
“Safe house.”
“Do you know where that is?”
“No.”
Then she remembered Lily’s notebook.
Adrian had slipped it into her coat earlier.
Inside the back cover, Samuel had written an address.
Benton Street.
They reached the neighborhood in nine minutes.
Police sirens sounded somewhere behind them.
Benton Street consisted of old brick townhouses.
Number 48 had its front door open.
Claire stopped half a block away.
“Stay in the car.”
Ethan stared.
“You just rescued me and now you want to walk into that?”
“Yes.”
“That’s insane.”
“Probably.”
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“Claire—”
“You are nineteen.”
“And you’re a waitress.”
“Former waitress.”
“Great. Huge tactical advantage.”
Despite everything, she nearly laughed.
“Call 911.”
“And tell them what?”
“Tell them a child is in danger.”
That changed him.
He nodded.
Claire approached the house.
No guards outside.
That frightened her.
Inside, a lamp had been knocked over.
A man lay unconscious near the stairs.
One of Adrian’s guards.
Alive.
Claire heard something upstairs.
A soft thump.
She climbed.
At the end of the hallway, a bedroom door stood open.
Samuel sat against the wall.
Blood stained his shoulder.
“Claire.”
She rushed to him.
“Where’s Lily?”
“He took her.”
“Who?”
Samuel looked toward another doorway.
“Mercer.”
Claire felt cold.
“He was here?”
“He had access codes.”
“How?”
Samuel laughed bitterly.
“He installed Adrian’s medical security system.”
Of course.
“Where did he take her?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire pulled out her phone.
Adrian answered immediately.
“Claire?”
“Mercer took Lily.”
Silence.
Then, “Samuel?”
“Alive. Shot in shoulder.”
“I have Julian.”
“Good.”
Adrian’s voice changed.
“Put Samuel on.”
Claire handed him the phone.
Samuel listened.
Then looked at Claire.
“Adrian says search the room.”
“For what?”
“Mercer didn’t come just for Lily.”
They searched.
Drawers.
Closet.
Desk.
Claire noticed Lily’s cream sweater on the floor.
Beneath it lay a crumpled piece of paper.
A child’s drawing.
Three figures.
Evelyn.
Julian.
Mercer.
But this time there was a fourth.
A man seated in a chair.
His face was scribbled black.
Claire stared.
“Who is that?”
Samuel leaned closer.
Then his expression changed.
“I don’t know.”
“Lily does.”
On the bottom of the page, Lily had written a word.
Not a name.
CHAIR.
Claire remembered the restaurant.
Julian standing behind Adrian’s chair.
Lily pointing.
Everyone assumed she was pointing at Julian.
“What if she wasn’t?”
Samuel frowned.
“What?”
“What if she was pointing behind him?”
“There was nobody behind Julian.”
“Not tonight.”
Claire looked at the drawing.
“But maybe there was the night Evelyn died.”
Samuel’s eyes widened.
He reached for the phone.
“Adrian.”
No answer.
At the garage, Adrian had Julian handcuffed to a pipe.
Marco stood guard.
Julian’s lip was split.
Adrian held Evelyn’s fake bracelet.
“Where is Mercer taking Lily?”
Julian smiled.
“You think I know?”
“I think you know everything he knows.”
“You always overestimated me.”
Adrian slammed him against the wall.
“Where is my daughter?”
Julian’s expression finally cracked.
“You think I wanted this?”
“What?”
“I was trying to get Lily away from him.”
Adrian stared.
“You poisoned my drink.”
“No.”
“The vial.”
“Sedative.”
“Why?”
“To get you out of that restaurant before Mercer’s men arrived.”
“You ran.”
“Because Lily pointed at me and you looked at me like you wanted me dead.”
“You could have explained.”
Julian laughed bitterly.
“Would you have listened?”
Adrian said nothing.
Julian leaned closer.
“Evelyn didn’t trust me at the end. She thought I was involved.”
“Were you?”
“With the money? Yes.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“I moved funds.”
“For whom?”
“Mercer.”
“Why?”
“Because he had something on me.”
“What?”
Julian looked away.
“My son.”
Adrian froze.
“You don’t have a son.”
“Exactly.”
For fifteen years, Julian had told no one.
At twenty-two, before he had met Adrian, he had fathered a child with a woman who disappeared from his life.
Years later Mercer found them.
He threatened the boy.
Julian began moving money.
Small amounts at first.
Then larger.
Evelyn noticed.
“She confronted you?” Adrian asked.
“Yes.”
“And?”
“I told her everything.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
Julian looked exhausted.
“But she did.”
“What happened the night she died?”
Julian closed his eyes.
“I went to your house because she called me.”
“Why?”
“She had proof against Mercer.”
“What proof?”
“A recording.”
“The bracelet.”
Julian nodded.
“But when I arrived, Mercer was already upstairs.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Lily saw you.”
“Yes.”
“She saw Mercer.”
“Yes.”
“And another man.”
Julian’s eyes opened.
“What other man?”
Adrian watched him carefully.
“A man behind the chair.”
For the first time, Julian looked genuinely terrified.
“Adrian.”
“What?”
“You need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Because if Lily drew the chair, then she saw him.”
“Who?”
Julian struggled against the cuffs.
“Unchain me.”
“Name.”
“Adrian, listen to me.”
“Name.”
Julian stared at his oldest friend.
Then whispered:
“Your father.”
Adrian went completely still.
“My father died twelve years ago.”
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
Adrian’s blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying Nicholas Vale never died.”
“That’s impossible.”
“You saw a body.”
“I buried him.”
“You buried a burned body after the warehouse fire.”
Julian leaned forward.
“You never saw his face.”
Adrian remembered.
Bandages.
A closed casket.
DNA confirmation arranged by—
He stopped.
“Mercer.”
Julian nodded.
Everything inside Adrian seemed to tilt.
Nicholas Vale.
The man who had built the empire Adrian spent years trying to legitimize.
The father who had taught him loyalty through fear.
The father Evelyn despised.
The father Adrian believed had died before Lily was born.
“Why would he hide?”
“Because federal investigators were closing in.”
“Why come back?”
“He never left.”
Julian’s voice dropped.
“You were running his empire while believing it was yours.”
Adrian stared.
“The shell companies.”
“His.”
“Mercer.”
“His doctor first.”
“Evelyn found out.”
“Yes.”
“And he killed her.”
Julian looked away.
“I think so.”
Adrian’s phone rang.
Claire.
He answered.
She told him about Lily’s drawing.
The chair.
The fourth man.
Adrian did not respond for several seconds.
Then he said, “Claire, get out of the safe house.”
“Why?”
“Now.”
“What happened?”
“My father is alive.”
Silence.
Claire had never met Nicholas Vale.
Yet something in Adrian’s voice made her obey immediately.
She helped Samuel downstairs.
Ethan came inside to assist.
They reached the front door.
A black limousine had stopped across the street.
Samuel froze.
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“What?”
The rear door opened.
An elderly man stepped out.
Tall.
Silver-haired.
Walking with a cane.
Samuel’s face became white.
“Nicholas.”
The man looked directly at Claire.
Then smiled.
“Ms. Monroe.”
Claire’s pulse stopped.
He knew her name.
Two men emerged behind him.
Then Dr. Daniel Mercer stepped from the other side of the limousine.
Claire searched desperately for Lily.
She was not there.
Nicholas approached the steps.
“You have something that belongs to my family.”
Claire tightened her grip on Evelyn’s notebook.
“No.”
Nicholas smiled.
“I wasn’t talking about the notebook.”
A van door opened behind the limousine.
Lily appeared inside.
Her hands were tied.
Nicholas looked back at Claire.
“Bring me my son.”
May you like
Then he lifted his cane and pointed toward Samuel.
“And if Adrian is not standing here in twenty minutes, the child learns exactly what happened to her mother.”
