Chapter 5 - The Room Beneath the Restaurant

Claire wanted to run toward Lily.

Samuel stopped her.

“Don’t.”

Nicholas Vale smiled from the sidewalk as if he had invited them to dinner.

“Smart man.”

Mercer stood beside the van.

Lily stared at Claire.

She was afraid.

But she was watching.

Thinking.

Claire had learned that about her.

Fear did not make Lily helpless.

Adults had mistaken silence for weakness.

Nicholas made the same mistake.

“Let the girl go,” Samuel said.

“After Adrian arrives.”

“He won’t.”

Nicholas smiled.

“He will.”

Claire looked at the van.

Then at Nicholas.

“What do you want from him?”

“You ask too many questions.”

“That’s why your granddaughter likes me.”

His expression cooled.

Interesting.

He cared what Lily thought.

Or perhaps he hated that he did.

Claire continued.

“She has been warning everyone about you.”

Nicholas’s jaw tightened.

“She is confused.”

“No.”

Mercer looked at him.

A warning.

Claire saw it.

These men were not as united as they appeared.

She pressed harder.

“She remembers Evelyn.”

Nicholas’s eyes flickered.

“She remembers the bedroom.”

Mercer spoke.

“Enough.”

Claire looked at him.

“You’re afraid of a seven-year-old.”

He stepped toward her.

Nicholas raised one finger.

Mercer stopped.

That answered another question.

Nicholas was in charge.

Adrian arrived fourteen minutes later.

Marco drove.

Julian sat in the back, still handcuffed.

When Adrian stepped onto Benton Street, Nicholas’s smile changed.

Almost proud.

“Son.”

Adrian stopped ten feet away.

Claire had never seen hatred this controlled.

“You died.”

Nicholas spread his hands.

“Apparently not.”

“You killed Evelyn.”

“No greeting?”

“You killed my wife.”

Nicholas sighed.

“Evelyn became difficult.”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

Adrian moved.

Marco grabbed his arm.

Nicholas smiled.

“That temper. Still there.”

Adrian stared at Lily.

She shook her head slightly.

Do not.

He listened.

Claire noticed.

So did Nicholas.

“You’re taking orders from a child now?”

Adrian answered without looking away from Lily.

“I should have started sooner.”

Something passed across Nicholas’s face.

Maybe anger.

Maybe shame.

He turned toward Mercer.

“Bring her.”

Mercer led Lily from the van.

She walked toward Nicholas.

Claire’s heart pounded.

Then Lily stumbled.

Mercer caught her.

In that instant, Lily pulled something from his pocket.

She dropped it beneath the van.

Nobody noticed except Claire.

A phone.

Lily looked at Claire.

Then at the vehicle.

Claire understood.

When Mercer pushed Lily forward again, Claire slowly moved sideways.

Samuel began talking loudly.

“You can’t disappear again, Nicholas. Too many people know.”

“People disappear every day.”

While everyone watched him, Claire crouched behind the van.

She retrieved the phone.

Unlocked.

Mercer had been careless.

Or arrogant.

On the screen was a map.

One location marked.

Bellini House.

The restaurant.

Claire stared.

Why?

Then she saw a message thread.

N.V.: Bring the girl downstairs when Adrian arrives.

D.M.: The room is ready.

Claire stood.

The room.

Lily’s earlier gesture.

Downward.

A square.

She had been taken somewhere beneath the restaurant.

Claire slipped the phone into her pocket.

Adrian saw.

She gave the smallest nod.

He trusted her enough not to ask.

Nicholas pointed toward the limousine.

“We’re going for a drive.”

“No,” Adrian said.

Nicholas looked at Lily.

“Yes.”

Twenty-five minutes later they returned to Bellini House.

The restaurant was closed.

Police tape hung across the entrance.

But Mercer used a rear key.

Of course he had access.

Nicholas led Adrian, Claire, Samuel, Lily, Julian, and Marco through the kitchen.

Two armed men followed.

They entered a wine cellar.

Claire had worked there fourteen months.

She had never seen the steel door behind the far rack.

Nicholas pressed his cane against a hidden panel.

The rack slid aside.

Stairs descended.

Lily froze.

Claire touched her hand.

“You’ve been here.”

Lily nodded.

Adrian’s face darkened.

Nicholas heard.

“She wandered where she shouldn’t.”

Adrian lunged.

A gun came up.

Claire stepped between them.

“Not here.”

Adrian looked at her.

She whispered, “Mercer’s phone.”

His eyes changed.

“Location was marked here.”

Nicholas ordered them downstairs.

The room beneath Bellini House looked nothing like a basement.

Computers lined one wall.

Filing cabinets lined another.

Security monitors showed streets, warehouses, offices.

Adrian stared.

Nicholas smiled.

“This is what you inherited.”

“I inherited nothing from you.”

“Everything you have came from me.”

“No.”

Adrian looked at Lily.

“What I have came from the people I didn’t lose.”

Nicholas’s smile faded.

Mercer locked the door.

Claire studied the monitors.

One showed the restaurant dining room.

Another showed Vale House.

Another—

Her apartment.

Claire’s stomach turned.

Nicholas had been watching all of them.

Ethan noticed too.

“You were watching my sister?”

Nicholas barely looked at him.

“You were useful.”

Ethan stepped forward.

Claire held him back.

Adrian turned toward Nicholas.

“What do you want?”

Nicholas sat in a leather chair.

The chair.

Claire looked at Lily.

The child stared at it.

Her breathing changed.

This was the chair from her drawing.

Not a bedroom chair.

This one.

The room beneath the restaurant.

Lily had seen Nicholas here.

Maybe after Evelyn died.

Maybe before.

Nicholas opened a folder.

“Sign control of Vale Maritime back to me.”

Adrian laughed.

“No.”

“Then I expose every illegal operation tied to your name.”

“You ran them.”

“On paper, you did.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“He’s telling the truth.”

Adrian looked at him.

Samuel pointed to the files.

“Nicholas built the shell network under Adrian’s identity.”

Nicholas smiled.

“A son should inherit his father’s burdens.”

“And prison sentence,” Claire said.

Nicholas glanced at her.

“You really are irritating.”

“I’ve been told.”

Mercer smirked.

Nicholas continued.

“You sign. You take Lily. You leave the country. Everyone survives.”

Adrian looked at the documents.

Claire knew immediately he was considering it.

Not for himself.

For Lily.

She caught his eye.

“No.”

Nicholas laughed.

“The waitress is giving orders again.”

Claire ignored him.

“Lily risked everything to show you the truth. Don’t sign it away.”

Adrian looked at his daughter.

Lily shook her head.

Nicholas’s patience broke.

“She is a child!”

Lily flinched.

Adrian stepped between them.

“Yes.”

His voice became deadly calm.

“She is.”

Then he tore the contract in half.

Nicholas stood.

Mercer raised his gun.

Marco moved.

Julian shouted.

Everything happened at once.

The lights died.

Ethan had reached the computer wall.

He pulled a breaker.

In darkness, Claire grabbed Lily.

Adrian tackled someone.

A gun fired.

Samuel shouted.

Emergency lights came on.

Nicholas was gone.

Mercer was gone.

The steel door stood open.

Marco lay on the floor holding his shoulder.

Alive.

Julian had disappeared too.

Adrian rushed toward the stairs.

Claire stopped him.

“Wait.”

“What?”

She pointed to the main monitor.

Ethan had restored one camera.

A recording was playing automatically.

Evelyn.

Not the message from the memory card.

Another one.

She sat in the same underground room.

Alive.

Terrified.

Nicholas stood behind her.

Mercer stood beside him.

And Julian was there.

Adrian stared.

The date was the night Evelyn died.

Evelyn looked directly toward the camera.

Then she said:

“Adrian, if you ever see this, Lily knows where the original recording is.”

The video cut.

Lily pulled Claire’s sleeve.

She pointed upstairs.

Toward the dining room.

Then at Claire.

Claire frowned.

“Me?”

Lily nodded.

She mimed carrying a tray.

A server.

Then she pointed beneath a table.

Claire suddenly remembered.

The night Adrian’s party arrived, Lily had insisted on sitting at the same table where Evelyn once attended a charity dinner months earlier.

Claire looked at Adrian.

“She hid it here.”

They ran upstairs.

Lily led them into the dark dining room.

She crawled beneath Adrian’s table.

Her fingers found a small strip of tape beneath the tabletop.

She pulled free a tiny silver key.

Adrian stared.

“What does it open?”

Lily pointed toward the coatroom.

Claire followed.

Inside, behind an old wooden panel, they found a narrow lockbox.

The key fit.

Adrian opened it.

Inside was the real anniversary bracelet.

And a handwritten letter from Evelyn.

Adrian touched it like it might disappear.

Claire whispered, “We found it.”

Then the restaurant speakers crackled.

Nicholas’s voice filled the room.

“No.”

Every door locked automatically.

The chandeliers went dark.

Nicholas spoke again.

May you like

“You found exactly what I needed you to find.”

Then smoke began pouring beneath the kitchen door.
