Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The door handle moved.

Once.

Then stopped.

Mara and Luca stood frozen in the darkness.

Neither of them spoke.

The only light came from the fireplace, casting moving shadows across the bedroom.

Someone was outside.

Someone who knew they were inside.

Luca slowly reached for the drawer beside his bed.

Mara noticed.

"What are you doing?"

He didn't look at her.

"Making sure we are not helpless."

His hand touched the drawer.

Then stopped.

Mara followed his eyes.

The drawer was open.

She knew it wasn't open before.

A cold feeling spread through her.

Someone had entered the room.

Someone had searched through his things.

Someone had been there while they were inside the hidden passage.

Luca looked at her.

"Stay behind me."

Mara almost laughed.

"You can barely stand."

His eyes narrowed.

"That has never stopped me before."

Before she could answer, the bedroom lights suddenly turned back on.

The door opened.

A woman stood there.

Mrs. Vale.

The house manager.

She held a tray with a glass of water and Luca's medication.

Her expression was calm.

Almost too calm.

"Mr. Varelli?"

Luca stared at her.

"What are you doing here?"

Mrs. Vale looked at the darkness behind him.

Then at the open wall.

For the first time in years, her perfect expression disappeared.

Only for a second.

But Mara saw it.

Fear.

"You found it."

The words slipped out before Mrs. Vale could stop herself.

The room became silent.

Luca's face changed.

"You knew."

Mrs. Vale immediately looked away.

"I don't know what you mean."

"You knew about the passage."

"I have worked in this house for twelve years."

"That wasn't my question."

His voice was colder now.

The voice that made powerful people uncomfortable.

Mrs. Vale placed the tray on the table.

"I came because your medication was late."

"Answer me."

She looked at him.

Then at Mara.

Something passed between them.

A warning.

A request.

Mara noticed.

"She knows something."

Mrs. Vale looked at her.

"You should leave this room."

Mara frowned.

"I'm not leaving."

"This does not involve you."

Luca looked at Mrs. Vale.

"She stays."

That surprised both women.

Mrs. Vale lowered her eyes.

"I was afraid this would happen."

"What?"

"That you would find out."

Luca stepped forward.

"What did my brother hide?"

Mrs. Vale became still.

The question changed everything.

Because she knew exactly who he meant.

Adrian.

For ten years, everyone had treated Adrian Varelli as a painful memory.

A tragedy.

A closed chapter.

But now his name was alive again.

Mrs. Vale sat down slowly.

"Your brother was not supposed to disappear."

Mara watched Luca.

His face showed nothing.

But his hands tightened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means someone wanted him gone."

"Who?"

Mrs. Vale looked toward the door.

Like she was afraid someone else might hear.

"Not here."

Luca laughed quietly.

There was no humor in it.

"My bedroom has a secret passage behind the wall, and you are worried about someone hearing?"

Mrs. Vale looked at the hidden opening.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Adrian discovered something."

"What?"

"I don't know everything."

"You're lying."

Mrs. Vale looked hurt.

"I protected this family."

"By keeping secrets from me?"

"By keeping you alive."

That sentence stopped him.

Mara noticed.

Luca didn't argue.

Because somewhere inside, he believed her.

"What did Adrian discover?"

Mrs. Vale looked at the photograph on the fireplace.

"The illness."

Silence.

Mara looked at Luca.

His expression changed.

"What about my illness?"

Mrs. Vale took a deep breath.

"Adrian believed someone was trying to remove both of you."

"Both?"

"He thought if you became too weak to lead, someone else would take control."

Luca stared.

"Who?"

Mrs. Vale didn't answer.

Mara stepped closer.

"You know."

Mrs. Vale looked at her.

"I know enough to be afraid."

The room became quiet.

Then Luca picked up the small metal box.

"Open this."

Mrs. Vale saw the box.

Her face changed.

"No."

Luca looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because Adrian left it for you."

"Exactly."

Mrs. Vale shook her head.

"He left it because he knew you would find it eventually."

"Then why are you afraid?"

Because she didn't answer.

Luca opened the box.

Inside was a small black flash drive.

Nothing else.

Mara stared.

"That's it?"

Luca picked it up.

There was another symbol carved into the metal.

The triangle.

Number 17.

Mrs. Vale whispered:

"Don't."

Luca looked at her.

"You spent ten years hiding this."

"I spent ten years trying to protect you."

"From what?"

Mrs. Vale looked at the flash drive.

"From the truth."

Luca almost smiled.

"The truth is the only thing nobody can hide forever."

He walked toward the desk.

There was an old laptop inside one of the drawers.

Mara noticed something.

The laptop was already there.

Ready.

Waiting.

"Why is that here?"

Nobody answered.

Luca opened it.

The screen turned on immediately.

No password.

No lock.

A single folder appeared.

ADRIAN.

Mara felt her stomach tighten.

Luca clicked it.

There were dozens of files.

Videos.

Documents.

Photographs.

Dates.

All connected to the last months before Adrian disappeared.

He opened the first video.

A younger Adrian appeared on screen.

Same eyes as Luca.

Same confidence.

But his face showed fear.

"If you are watching this, then I was right."

Luca stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

"I couldn't trust anyone inside the house."

Adrian looked directly into the camera.

"Not the staff."

"Not the business partners."

"Not even the people who claim they love you."

Mara glanced at Mrs. Vale.

The woman looked down.

Adrian continued.

"Luca, if you found this, you need to understand something."

The video glitched.

Then his voice returned.

"The person who made you sick is someone standing closer to you than you think."

Luca froze.

Mara felt a chill.

The screen went black.

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Luca slowly turned toward the people in the room.

"Who knew about my treatment?"

Mrs. Vale looked away.

Mara looked at the medication tray.

The glass of water.

The pills.

Everything suddenly looked different.

Luca picked up the medicine bottle.

The label was slightly damaged.

Like someone had removed something.

"Mara."

She looked at him.

"Check this."

She took the bottle.

Her fingers moved over the label.

There was a small tear underneath.

Something had been hidden.

She carefully pulled the damaged paper back.

A second label appeared.

Different instructions.

Different medication.

Her face changed.

"Luca..."

He saw her expression.

"What?"

Mara slowly turned the bottle around.

"This isn't the medicine your doctor prescribed."

The room went silent.

Mrs. Vale stood suddenly.

"Where did you get that?"

Luca looked at her.

And then everyone heard something from the hallway.

A man's footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Coming closer.

Mrs. Vale's face turned pale.

Because she recognized the person walking toward the bedroom.

Then the door opened.

May you like

And the man standing there said:

"You're not supposed to be awake yet, Luca."
