Chapter 11 - The Room That Held Isabella

The envelope was still on the floor.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody moved.
Because we all understood the meaning behind those words.
"Clara, if you are reading this, then Alexander has already opened the room where Isabella was hidden."
My hands became cold.
I looked at Dominic.
"Isabella was here?"
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The fear on his face said enough.
The house that had hidden my family for decades still had one more secret.
A room.
A hidden room.
A place where my sister had been kept.
Sophie held onto my hand.
"Mommy?"
I looked down.
She was scared.
I forced myself to smile.
"It’s okay."
But my voice betrayed me.
It wasn’t okay.
Nothing about this was okay.
Dominic picked up the envelope carefully.
"Where did you find this?"
Sophie pointed toward the hallway.
"The man left it."
"Which man?"
She looked at him.
"The one who looks like you."
Nobody spoke.
Alexander.
He had been inside the house.
He had been close enough to Sophie.
Close enough to leave a message.
And nobody noticed.
Dominic immediately turned toward the security panel near the entrance.
"The cameras."
Victor followed.
"They should show everything."
Dominic pressed the screen.
Nothing happened.
Black.
Every camera was offline.
He stared at it.
"When did this happen?"
Victor looked nervous.
"I don’t know."
Dominic turned.
"You were the one who managed security after my father died."
Victor looked away.
And again, that silence.
That terrible silence.
"You knew."
Victor shook his head.
"No."
Dominic stepped closer.
"Then explain."
"I knew there were blind spots."
"Blind spots?"
Dominic’s voice became colder.
"You knew someone could enter this house without being seen?"
Victor didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I stepped between them.
"Stop."
Both men looked at me.
"I don’t care who lied anymore."
I looked toward the hallway.
"I want to find Isabella."
The room became quiet.
Because that was the only thing that mattered.
Not the money.
Not the company.
Not the Valente name.
My sister.
A person I had never met.
A person who had been hidden from the world.
Dominic nodded.
"We find her."
My eyes moved to him.
"You’re coming?"
"Yes."
I almost asked why.
But I already knew.
Because Isabella wasn’t just my sister.
She was his family too.
A family he had lost without knowing.
Evelyn walked toward the stairs.
"The room is upstairs."
Everyone turned.
"You know where it is?"
She nodded.
"I helped your mother hide it."
My mother looked at her.
"You never told me."
Evelyn’s eyes filled with regret.
"I promised her."
My mother looked hurt.
"But I was the one who needed to know."
Evelyn whispered:
"Your mother wanted you alive more than she wanted you to know the truth."
Nobody responded.
Because that was the kind of decision a desperate mother made.
A painful one.
A lonely one.
We followed Evelyn upstairs.
The hallway seemed longer than before.
Every step felt heavier.
She stopped in front of an old wall.
Nothing unusual.
No door.
No handle.
Nothing.
I looked at her.
"This is it?"
She nodded.
"Behind this wall."
Dominic examined it.
"How?"
Evelyn touched a small crack near the edge.
"There was a hidden mechanism."
She pressed it.
A soft click echoed.
The wall moved.
Slowly.
A narrow passage appeared.
My heart raced.
Cold air came from inside.
Like the room had been waiting.
Dominic grabbed a flashlight.
"I’ll go first."
I stopped him.
"No."
He looked back.
"Clara."
"My sister is in there."
His expression softened.
Then he nodded.
We entered together.
The passage was small.
Old.
Dust covered everything.
But someone had been there recently.
Fresh footprints marked the floor.
Alexander.
The farther we walked, the more uncomfortable I became.
Because this wasn’t a forgotten room.
It was a place someone had used.
At the end of the passage was a door.
Evelyn stopped.
Her face changed.
"What?"
She whispered:
"This wasn’t here before."
Dominic looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"There was no second door."
Everyone stared.
The new door was modern.
Different from the old walls around it.
Someone had built it recently.
Someone had changed the room.
Dominic reached for the handle.
Then stopped.
A sound came from inside.
A voice.
A woman.
Crying.
My heart stopped.
"Isabella?"
I moved forward.
Dominic grabbed my arm.
"Wait."
But I couldn’t.
Twenty years.
Twenty years of not knowing.
Twenty years of wondering if I had a sister.
And now she was behind a door.
I stepped closer.
"Isabella?"
The crying stopped.
Silence.
Then a voice answered.
A voice I had never heard.
But somehow felt familiar.
"Clara?"
I covered my mouth.
My sister.
She knew my name.
Dominic slowly opened the door.
Inside was a small room.
A bed.
A chair.
Old photographs.
And on the wall...
Pictures of me.
My childhood.
My school photos.
My entire life.
Someone had been watching me.
Someone had been collecting pieces of me.
A woman stood near the window.
Older than me.
Same eyes as my mother.
Same expression.
Same sadness.
She looked at me.
And whispered:
"I waited so long."
I couldn’t move.
"Isabella?"
She nodded.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Yes."
I took one step forward.
Then another.
I wanted to ask everything.
Why?
How?
Who did this?
But before I could speak, Isabella looked behind me.
At Dominic.
Her expression changed.
Not relief.
Not happiness.
Fear.
She stepped backward.
"No."
Dominic froze.
"What?"
Isabella shook her head.
"No, he can’t be here."
My heart sank.
"Who?"
She looked directly at Dominic.
May you like
And whispered:
"Because he was the one who locked me away."
