Chapter 10 - The Photograph That Changed Everything

The photograph slipped from Dominic’s hand.

Nobody spoke.

I watched it fall to the floor.

Slowly.

Like time itself had stopped.

The picture landed face up.

And even before I picked it up, I knew.

I knew because everyone’s reaction told me enough.

My mother covered her mouth.

Evelyn looked away.

Victor closed his eyes.

And Dominic looked like someone had taken away the last thing he believed about his own family.

I bent down and picked up the photograph.

My fingers touched the old paper.

Then I turned it around.

And my heart stopped.

It was a picture of my mother.

Younger.

Smiling.

Holding a baby.

Beside her stood a man.

A man I recognized immediately.

Because I had seen his portrait hanging in the main hallway.

Dominic’s father.

But that wasn’t what shocked me.

It was the woman standing behind them.

The woman holding a little girl’s hand.

The woman everyone trusted.

The woman who had spent years taking care of the Valente family.

My eyes moved slowly toward her.

"Evelyn."

The room went silent.

She looked at the photograph.

Then at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I can explain."

My voice was barely a whisper.

"You were there?"

Evelyn didn’t answer.

That was enough.

"You knew my mother."

She nodded.

"I did."

"You knew Isabella."

Another nod.

"Yes."

"And you knew what happened."

Her silence broke something inside me.

Not because she was guilty.

Because once again, someone had chosen silence.

Everyone had chosen silence.

My entire life had been surrounded by people who knew the truth.

Except me.

I looked at Dominic.

"How many people knew?"

He didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

Too many.

I stepped back.

"I need air."

Nobody stopped me.

I walked toward the entrance hall.

The house felt different.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

The same expensive paintings.

But now I saw what it really was.

A museum of secrets.

Every room held a piece of my life that someone had hidden from me.

I reached the front door.

But before I opened it, Dominic spoke.

"Clara."

I stopped.

I didn’t turn around.

"What?"

His voice was quiet.

"I’m sorry."

Those two words almost made me angry.

Because sorry was easy.

Everyone could say sorry after destroying someone’s life.

But when I turned around, I saw something I hadn’t seen before.

Regret.

Real regret.

"I didn’t know."

I looked at him.

"That’s the problem."

He lowered his eyes.

"You trusted them."

He nodded.

"Yes."

"And I paid for that."

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

I walked outside.

The cold air hit my face.

For the first time that night, I could breathe.

But only for a moment.

Because my phone started ringing.

Unknown number.

I stared at the screen.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

"Hello?"

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a woman whispered:

"Clara?"

My entire body froze.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it once before.

In my dreams.

In old memories.

In the spaces where I tried to remember my mother.

"Mom?"

Silence.

Then:

"Don’t trust anyone in that house."

My eyes filled with tears.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

"I’m sorry."

The line cracked.

"Isabella is in danger."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Then another voice came through the phone.

A man.

Cold.

Calm.

"Give me the phone."

My blood turned cold.

My mother gasped.

Then the call ended.

I ran back inside.

Everyone looked at me.

Dominic immediately stood.

"What happened?"

I looked at him.

"My mother called."

Nobody moved.

Evelyn grabbed my arm.

"She’s alive?"

I nodded.

But before I could answer, Dominic’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Because his screen showed the same number.

The same unknown number.

Dominic looked at me.

Then answered.

"Hello?"

A man spoke.

I couldn’t hear the words.

But I saw Dominic’s expression change.

His face became pale.

"What do you want?"

A pause.

Then Dominic looked at me.

"No."

His voice became dangerous.

"She has nothing to do with this."

My stomach tightened.

"Who is it?"

Dominic didn’t answer.

He listened.

Then his eyes moved toward the photograph on the table.

The photograph of his father.

My mother.

And the hidden child.

Finally, Dominic spoke.

"You’re lying."

Another pause.

Then he whispered:

"Alexander?"

Everyone froze.

The phone fell silent.

Dominic slowly lowered it.

"He has Isabella."

The room exploded.

My mother covered her mouth.

"No."

Evelyn stepped forward.

"What did he say?"

Dominic looked at all of us.

"He wants the envelope."

Victor’s expression changed.

"The original one?"

Dominic nodded.

My heart raced.

"But why?"

Victor looked at me.

"Because he knows what’s inside."

I grabbed the envelope from the table.

"What is inside?"

Nobody answered.

Again.

That same silence.

That same terrible silence.

I opened it myself.

Inside was a document.

Only one page.

No explanation.

No letter.

Just a legal statement.

I read the first line.

And my hands started shaking.

"This agreement confirms the transfer of all Valente family assets..."

I looked up.

"What is this?"

Dominic stepped closer.

I continued reading.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

And everything made sense.

The hidden children.

The lies.

The fear.

The disappearances.

Because the document wasn’t about money.

It was about ownership.

Not of the company.

Not of the empire.

Of us.

A condition written by Dominic’s father.

A condition that said:

"All inheritance rights will be transferred to the surviving children of Clara and Isabella’s bloodline."

I looked at Dominic.

"He didn’t hide us because we were a problem."

Nobody spoke.

"He hid us because we were the only ones who could take everything away."

Victor nodded slowly.

"Yes."

A horrible realization settled over me.

My grandfather hadn’t erased us because he hated us.

He had hidden us because we were powerful.

Because our existence threatened everything he built.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

Sophie screamed.

I ran toward her voice.

"Mommy!"

I found her near the staircase.

Holding something.

A small envelope.

My heart dropped.

"Sophie."

She looked up.

"The man gave this to me."

Everyone rushed toward us.

Dominic knelt beside her.

"What man?"

She pointed toward the back hallway.

"The man who said he was my uncle."

Nobody moved.

Because there was only one person who could have said that.

Dominic slowly stood.

His face changed.

"Alexander."

The hallway was empty.

But on the floor was a second envelope.

With my name written on it.

And beneath my name was a message.

May you like

One sentence.

"Clara, if you are reading this, then Alexander has already opened the room where Isabella was hidden."
