Chapter 6 - The Name Hidden in My Blood

The birth certificate shook in my hands:
"That isn't possible."
When Colonel Emily Carter opened the classified document, she discovered a name that should never have existed in her family records.
But the person listed as the child's parent was standing only a few feet away.
And I finally understood why my father had hidden the truth from me.
The room went silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone was looking at the same document.
The same name.
The same impossible truth.
I slowly turned around.
Rachel stood behind me.
Her face had lost all color.
Daniel looked like he wanted to disappear.
Thomas looked at the paper in my hand and then at Rachel.
Not surprised.
Not completely.
And that was the part that hurt the most.
"You knew."
My voice was quiet.
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
"Emily..."
"No."
I held up the document.
"Don't say my name like you didn't know."
She looked down.
That was enough.
A lifetime of memories suddenly felt different.
The family dinners.
The conversations.
The moments she protected certain stories and avoided certain questions.
I had spent years believing Rachel was simply my older sister who worried too much.
Now I wasn't sure what was real.
The document in my hand was old.
Official.
Verified.
It wasn't a mistake.
It wasn't a fake.
It was a record my father had hidden inside a secret room beneath my house.
A record connected to me.
Connected to Rachel.
Connected to a truth nobody wanted me to discover.
I looked at the name again.
My hands tightened.
Because the person listed as my biological mother was not the woman who raised me.
It was someone else.
Someone I had never heard of.
Thomas stepped closer.
"Emily."
I looked at him.
"How long?"
He understood immediately.
"How long did you know?"
Thomas didn't answer.
That was his second mistake.
The first was keeping secrets.
The second was believing silence could protect me.
"I asked you a question."
He lowered his eyes.
"Not everything."
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn't believe how many people had decided what I was allowed to know.
"My entire life has been a classified file."
Nobody responded.
Because nobody could deny it.
The computer screen flashed again.
The countdown had stopped.
The emergency wipe was canceled.
But the system had opened another folder.
A video file.
Created twenty years earlier.
The title appeared:
"THE DAY EMILY WAS TAKEN."
I stared at it.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
I clicked play.
The screen showed a hospital room.
Old footage.
Security footage.
My father appeared.
Younger.
Exhausted.
Standing beside a hospital bed.
Then I saw myself.
A baby.
My breath stopped.
My father was holding me.
He looked terrified.
Not happy.
Not proud.
Terrified.
A younger version of Thomas appeared beside him.
The same Thomas who stood next to me now.
The same man who claimed he only knew pieces of the truth.
My father's voice came through the speakers.
"If you're watching this, then Emily knows."
The video shook slightly.
Someone behind the camera moved.
My father continued.
"She deserves the truth."
I leaned closer.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
The video couldn't answer.
My father's younger face appeared again.
"I didn't raise Emily to hide her from the world."
A pause.
"I hid the world from Emily."
The words hit harder than anything else.
Because I understood my father.
Not completely.
But enough.
He wasn't trying to control me.
He was trying to protect me.
The video continued.
A woman appeared beside my father.
A woman I had never seen before.
She looked at the baby in his arms.
She looked heartbroken.
My father turned toward the camera.
"This is the woman who gave Emily life."
My eyes moved toward the screen.
The woman looked familiar.
Not because I knew her.
Because I had seen her face somewhere.
On an old photograph.
A photograph from my childhood.
A photograph I thought showed a family friend.
The video froze.
Thomas whispered:
"Her name was Laura."
I looked at him.
"You knew her?"
He nodded slowly.
"She was your father's partner."
"Military?"
"No."
He paused.
"Something much more complicated."
I looked at Rachel.
She was crying silently.
"Tell me."
She shook her head.
"Emily, please."
"Tell me."
My voice was stronger.
The same command voice I used in the field.
Rachel looked at me.
And finally broke.
"Laura wasn't just your mother."
The room went cold.
"What does that mean?"
Rachel wiped her face.
"She was part of the same operation your father was investigating."
Thomas closed his eyes.
Like he hated admitting the next words.
"Your father discovered that the people responsible for the leak were closer than he imagined."
I looked at Daniel.
Then Rachel.
Then Thomas.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
I walked toward Rachel.
"Who was involved?"
Her lips trembled.
"Emily..."
"Who?"
She looked at Daniel.
That movement told me everything.
Daniel stepped back.
"No."
I stared at him.
"Why are you scared?"
"I'm not."
"You are."
His face changed.
For the first time, he wasn't pretending.
"I didn't know what Victor planned."
The name made Thomas immediately react.
"Victor contacted you."
Daniel said nothing.
"You knew him."
Daniel looked away.
That was confirmation.
I walked toward him.
"Why did he send you here?"
"I told you."
"No."
I picked up the document.
"You weren't trying to steal my house."
Daniel looked at me.
"You were trying to find this room."
Silence.
The truth landed.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Daniel didn't deny it.
Because there was no point anymore.
"I was supposed to find the files."
"Who ordered you?"
He stayed quiet.
Thomas stepped forward.
"Daniel."
A long pause.
Then Daniel whispered:
"Victor."
The room changed.
Because Victor Hale wasn't just alive.
He wasn't just watching.
He was moving pieces.
Using people.
Including my family.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
Again.
I looked at the screen.
One message.
"You're finally asking the right questions."
A second message appeared.
"I have something your father never showed you."
Then a photo loaded.
My heart stopped.
It was a picture of my father.
Alive.
After the day everyone said he died.
Standing beside Victor Hale.
And beside them was another person.
A person whose identity made Thomas immediately reach for his weapon.
May you like
Because the person in the photograph was the last person any of us expected to see.
The person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.
