Chapter 5 - The Enemy Hidden in My Family

The secret door slammed shut behind us:

"Nobody panic."

When Colonel Emily Carter turned back toward the hidden room, she found a countdown timer appearing on the military computer.

But the screen showed something worse:

"Memory purge initiated."

And the files about my father were disappearing one by one.

I ran toward the control panel.

The door had locked automatically.

No handle.

No visible mechanism.

Only a smooth metal surface separating us from the rest of the house.

Thomas immediately pulled out his phone.

No signal.

Not surprising.

A hidden military room designed by my father would never have normal communication access.

Daniel looked around nervously.

"This wasn't supposed to happen."

I turned toward him.

Those words mattered.

Not because they revealed something new.

Because they confirmed what I already suspected.

Daniel knew enough to be afraid.

"You've been here before."

He looked at me.

"No."

I stepped closer.

"Don't lie to me."

The calm in my voice made him uncomfortable.

Because he was finally seeing the person everyone else had ignored for years.

The person behind the quiet conversations.

The person behind the simple government employee story.

Thomas watched Daniel carefully.

"You knew this room existed."

Daniel swallowed.

"I knew there was something under the house."

"How?"

He didn't answer.

I looked at Rachel.

She looked devastated.

"Rachel."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't know about the room."

"But you knew he was looking for something."

She nodded slowly.

"My father told me Daniel had questions about your family."

"And you said nothing."

"I thought it was just about money."

I looked at her.

"Everyone always thinks it's about money."

The countdown continued.

08:42.

08:41.

Every second erased another piece of my father's past.

I connected a cable from the old system to my field device.

Thomas noticed.

"You still carry that?"

I looked at him.

"You know I never stop preparing."

A small smile almost appeared on his face.

Almost.

The system recognized my access.

A message appeared.

"IDENTITY CONFIRMED."

Then:

"WELCOME, EMILY CARTER."

The screen changed.

A new folder appeared.

"FINAL DIRECTIVE."

My heart slowed.

Because my father had created this for me.

Not someone else.

Me.

I opened it.

The first video file started automatically.

My father's face appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But still the same man I remembered.

For a moment, I forgot everything else.

The accusations.

The betrayal.

The secrets.

I only saw my father.

"Emily."

His voice filled the hidden room.

"If you're watching this, then the people I trusted failed to protect you."

I froze.

Thomas looked away.

My father continued.

"I spent my life believing secrets could keep people safe."

A pause.

"Then I learned secrets only protect the people who control them."

I moved closer to the screen.

"I need you to understand something. The lake house was never just a house."

The camera angle changed.

My father showed the room around him.

The same room I was standing in.

"I built this place because I discovered someone inside our organization was selling information."

My eyes narrowed.

Someone inside.

Not outside.

Not an enemy.

Someone trusted.

The video continued.

"I suspected Victor Hale."

Thomas immediately looked at me.

"But I was wrong about one thing."

My father's expression changed.

"He wasn't working alone."

The room became silent.

The countdown continued.

05:18.

05:17.

My father looked directly into the camera.

"Emily, the person who betrayed me is someone you've known your entire life."

The video paused.

Static appeared.

Then returned.

But the next part was corrupted.

Thomas immediately moved toward the computer.

"The file was damaged."

"Can you recover it?"

"Maybe."

"Do it."

He started working.

I stared at the frozen image of my father.

Someone I knew my entire life.

Someone close.

My mind went through every possibility.

Every person.

Every conversation.

Every moment that suddenly felt different.

Daniel.

Rachel.

Someone else.

Then I noticed something.

A detail in the video background.

A photograph sitting on my father's desk.

A family photograph.

My family photograph.

But someone had been removed.

I moved closer.

"Pause."

Thomas stopped.

I pointed at the screen.

"Zoom in."

He enlarged the image.

The photograph became clearer.

It showed my father.

My mother.

Me as a child.

And another person standing beside us.

Someone whose face had been scratched out.

Not damaged by time.

Deliberately destroyed.

"Who is that?" Rachel whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because my father had left no name.

Only a message.

The screen suddenly changed.

A new file opened.

Not from my father.

From someone else.

The title appeared.

"FOR EMILY CARTER ONLY."

I didn't touch anything.

The file began playing.

Victor Hale appeared.

Older than the photograph.

Alive.

"Emily."

His voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

"I know you're angry."

I stared at the screen.

"Good."

He leaned closer.

"Anger means you're finally paying attention."

Thomas stepped forward.

"Turn it off."

I stopped him.

I needed answers.

Victor continued.

"Your father lied to you because he thought ignorance would protect you."

A small smile crossed his face.

"But your father always underestimated one thing."

The screen flickered.

"He underestimated how much you became like him."

My hands tightened.

Victor looked directly into the camera.

"The truth is, Emily, I didn't betray your father."

A pause.

"He betrayed me."

Nobody moved.

The words felt impossible.

Victor continued.

"Twenty years ago, your father discovered the truth about our organization."

Organization.

Not unit.

Not mission.

Organization.

"He tried to expose everyone involved."

The video glitched.

"But before he could..."

The screen froze.

Thomas cursed quietly.

"What happened?"

"The system is blocking the rest."

"From who?"

Thomas looked at the screen.

Then at me.

"Someone with higher access."

Higher access.

That meant only a few people.

People with authority.

People who should have been impossible to reach.

The countdown hit:

02:00.

The computer displayed another warning.

"Emergency wipe cannot be stopped."

I looked at the system.

Then at the hidden files.

Then at Daniel.

"How did Victor contact you?"

Daniel looked shocked.

"What?"

"You heard me."

"I never met him."

"You knew about the room."

"I told you—"

"No."

My voice cut through the room.

"You knew enough to bring people here."

Daniel stepped backward.

Rachel looked at him.

"Daniel?"

He looked trapped.

Then his expression changed.

Not fear.

Acceptance.

Like he knew hiding was no longer possible.

"I didn't know who he was."

"Who?"

Daniel looked at the screen.

"Victor."

The name left his mouth too naturally.

Too quickly.

I noticed.

Thomas noticed.

Everyone noticed.

Daniel realized his mistake.

The countdown reached:

00:30.

Thomas shouted:

"Emily, we need to copy the files now."

I connected the drive.

The system started transferring.

But one folder remained locked.

One folder.

One name.

"EMILY'S ORIGIN."

I stared at it.

My father had hidden many things.

But this was different.

This wasn't about his mission.

It was about me.

The countdown reached:

00:10.

I entered my access code.

Denied.

I tried again.

Denied.

Thomas looked at the screen.

"Emily, what password are you using?"

I didn't answer.

Because I already knew.

My father wouldn't use a military code.

He would use something personal.

Something only I would know.

I typed the last words he ever said to me.

The system unlocked.

The folder opened.

Inside was one file.

A birth certificate.

Not mine.

Someone else's.

I opened it.

May you like

And the name at the top of the document made my entire body freeze.

Because it belonged to the person standing behind me.
