The Colonel’s Silent War / Chapter 6 / 7

Chapter 6 - The House Where My Brother Died

The address on my phone had not changed.

But everything else had.

I sat in my car outside the old Carter property, staring at the abandoned house where my family had told me my brother died twenty years ago.

The house looked exactly like my memories.

The broken fence.

The old wooden porch.

The cracked window near the garage.

The place I had spent years avoiding.

The place where everyone told me Daniel took his final breath.

Except now I knew one thing.

Daniel had never died there.

Someone had wanted me to believe he did.

I looked at the passenger seat.

My father’s file was sitting there.

The same file that had destroyed everything I thought I knew.

The same file that connected my daughter’s injury to a secret my family had protected for two decades.

My phone vibrated.

Another message.

Unknown number.

"You're already late."

I stared at the screen.

My hand tightened around the phone.

Someone was watching me.

Someone knew I was here.

I stepped out of the car.

I didn’t call Daniel.

I didn’t call Claire.

I didn’t call anyone.

The person who took Ruby wanted me alone.

And if there was one thing I had learned in the military, it was this:

When someone controls the environment, you change the rules.

I walked toward the house.

The front door was locked.

But the lock was new.

That was strange.

Nobody had lived here for twenty years.

At least, that was what I had been told.

I looked around.

Fresh tire marks were visible near the driveway.

Someone had been here recently.

Someone was maintaining this place.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the small tool I carried with me.

Old habits.

Old training.

Within seconds, the door opened.

The house smelled different.

Not abandoned.

Not empty.

Someone had been living here.

The furniture was covered, but not with dust.

The floor was clean.

The air was cold.

Too cold.

I stepped inside.

"Ruby?"

My voice echoed through the hallway.

Nothing.

I moved deeper into the house.

The walls were covered with old photographs.

My family.

My childhood.

Daniel.

Me.

But one photograph made me stop.

It was taken after Daniel supposedly died.

A family picture.

My parents.

Vanessa.

Me.

Everyone smiling.

Everyone pretending.

Except someone had written something on the back of the frame.

I turned it over.

Three words.

"She knows now."

My stomach tightened.

She.

Not I.

Not Emma.

She.

Someone had been writing about another person.

I heard a sound upstairs.

A footstep.

I immediately looked up.

"Who's there?"

Silence.

Then another step.

I moved toward the staircase.

Every instinct told me to slow down.

But every part of me wanted my daughter.

I climbed.

One step.

Two.

Three.

At the top of the stairs, I saw a hallway.

Four doors.

Three were open.

One was closed.

And there was something taped to it.

A yellow piece of paper.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

Ruby’s handwriting.

Six years old.

Small letters.

Uneven.

The note said:

"Mommy, I waited."

My breathing changed.

I reached for the door.

But before I touched it, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

"Where are you?"

His voice was urgent.

"Emma, listen to me."

"What happened?"

A pause.

Then:

"I found out who took Ruby."

I froze.

"Who?"

His silence was enough.

"Daniel."

His voice dropped.

"Emma... it wasn't Vanessa."

I looked at the closed door.

The note.

The handwriting.

My daughter had been here.

"Then who was it?"

Daniel took a breath.

"The person who has been protecting Black Hollow since the beginning."

My fingers touched the doorknob.

"Who?"

Another pause.

Then Daniel whispered:

"Your mother."

I stopped.

"No."

"Emma, you need to leave that house."

I stared at the door.

"Where is Ruby?"

"She's inside."

My heart nearly stopped.

"What?"

Daniel's voice became desperate.

"Emma, don't open that door."

I looked at the note again.

My daughter’s handwriting.

My daughter’s message.

She had been waiting.

"Why?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Because the person who took Ruby wants you to see what happened to me."

The call went silent.

I heard something behind the door.

A small movement.

A child crying.

"Mommy..."

Ruby.

I grabbed the handle.

My entire body moved before my mind could stop it.

I opened the door.

Inside was a bedroom.

A bedroom I remembered.

My childhood bedroom.

The same wallpaper.

The same wooden shelf.

The same small window.

But it wasn’t empty.

Ruby was sitting on the bed.

Awake.

Alive.

Crying.

I ran toward her.

"Ruby!"

She threw her arms around me.

I held her so tightly I was afraid I would never let go.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Who brought you here?"

She looked behind me.

And her expression changed.

Fear.

Not of the room.

Of someone else.

I slowly turned.

The closet door was open.

I hadn’t noticed it before.

Inside was a hidden space.

A small room behind the wall.

And sitting there was a person.

My mother.

She looked at me.

And she was holding a photograph.

The same photograph from the file.

The one with the missing person.

But now the missing piece was there.

My father.

And beside him...

A younger version of me.

Holding a document.

My mother stood slowly.

"Emma."

I stepped in front of Ruby.

"What did you do?"

She looked at my daughter.

Then back at me.

"I saved her."

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

"You kidnapped my child."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I protected her from Vanessa."

I stared at her.

"Vanessa didn't take her."

"No."

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

"Because Vanessa was never the one we should have feared."

The room became silent.

I looked at the photograph in her hand.

Then at her.

"Who?"

My mother looked toward the hallway.

Her face changed.

Like she heard something.

Like someone else was coming.

Then she whispered:

"The person who has been controlling this family for twenty years."

The lights suddenly went out.

Ruby grabbed my hand.

A sound came from downstairs.

A door opening.

Slow footsteps.

Someone entering the house.

My mother looked at me with terror in her eyes.

May you like

And then she said the name I never expected to hear...

"Emma, your father is alive."
