Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind the Door

The back door moved slowly.
Not opened.
Moved.
Like someone on the other side was waiting for us to notice.
I didn’t move.
Neither did Daniel.
My mother covered her mouth.
And for the first time that night, Vanessa wasn’t there to explain anything.
The door opened wider.
A shadow appeared.
My hand moved instinctively toward my side.
Years of training took over before emotion could.
But then a voice came from outside.
"Emma."
I froze.
Not because I recognized the voice.
Because I didn’t.
And that was worse.
A woman stepped into the kitchen.
She was around my age.
Dark hair.
Calm expression.
A familiar scar near her eyebrow.
She looked at Daniel first.
Then at me.
Then at the file sitting on the table.
"You finally found it."
I stared at her.
"Who are you?"
She didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at my mother.
"She deserves to know."
My mother shook her head.
"No."
The woman sighed.
"After twenty years, you’re still trying to control the story."
My eyes moved between them.
"You know each other."
The woman looked at me.
"My name is Claire."
The name meant nothing.
Until Daniel spoke.
"She was there that night."
My body went still.
"The night you disappeared?"
Daniel nodded.
"The night everything changed."
I looked at Claire.
"You were part of Black Hollow?"
Her expression changed slightly.
Enough.
I saw it.
She knew exactly what I was talking about.
"I was."
My mother stood.
"Emma, don't listen to her."
I turned.
"Why?"
She looked shocked.
"Because she destroyed our family."
I laughed quietly.
"Our family was destroyed long before tonight."
Nobody answered.
Claire walked closer to the table.
She looked at the photograph.
The one with the missing person.
"The person removed from this picture was not a mistake."
I picked it up.
"Who was removed?"
Claire looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
"Your father."
I frowned.
"What?"
Daniel looked away.
I felt anger rising.
"No."
Claire nodded.
"Your father was the one who created Black Hollow."
The room went silent.
My father.
The man who taught me discipline.
The man who told me honesty mattered.
The man who spent my entire childhood telling me that family protected family.
He was the person behind it.
I looked at my mother.
She didn’t deny it.
That was the worst part.
"You knew."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't know everything."
"But you knew enough."
She sat down.
"I was scared."
I looked at her.
"You were scared?"
I pointed toward the hospital.
"Ruby was scared."
My voice cracked.
"She was six years old."
My mother looked down.
For once, she had nothing to say.
Claire opened the folder again.
"There is something you need to understand."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"Vanessa didn't hurt Ruby because of cake."
The room changed.
Because that was the one thing I had not considered.
I thought it was anger.
A moment of losing control.
A terrible mistake.
But Claire was saying something else.
"It was a warning."
My blood went cold.
"A warning for who?"
Claire looked directly at me.
"You."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Claire."
But she continued.
"They wanted you to come home."
I stared at her.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
That was becoming the pattern of my life.
Every truth came with another locked door.
Every answer created another question.
I picked up the file.
"Then explain this."
I pointed at the documents.
"Why was my family involved in a classified military operation?"
Claire looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"Because your brother discovered something he wasn't supposed to find."
Daniel looked down.
"I found evidence that Black Hollow wasn't about protecting national security."
"What was it about?"
He looked at me.
"Control."
The word felt heavier than it should have.
"What kind of control?"
Claire answered.
"People."
I stared at her.
She continued.
"Black Hollow was created to identify people who could influence major decisions. Military leaders. Government officials. Intelligence officers."
My stomach tightened.
"And?"
Claire looked at me.
"And your father discovered your name was on the list."
I stopped breathing.
"My name?"
Daniel nodded.
"You were twenty-two."
I remembered that time.
I remembered being young.
Angry.
Confused.
Thinking my family was simply complicated.
I remembered Daniel telling me to leave.
To build a life somewhere else.
I thought he was abandoning me.
He was saving me.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Because every person who knew the truth was being watched."
"By who?"
His eyes moved toward the folder.
Then the missing page.
"The person who took the final report."
I opened the folder again.
The missing section.
The one my father had written.
The one someone removed.
"Who has it?"
Daniel didn’t answer.
Claire did.
"Vanessa."
I looked at the door.
The same door she had disappeared through.
My sister.
The person my family had protected.
The person who had hurt my daughter.
The person who had known the truth all along.
I grabbed my phone.
I called Ruby’s hospital.
The nurse answered.
"Children’s unit."
"This is Colonel Emma Carter. I need information about my daughter."
The nurse paused.
"Colonel Carter?"
"Yes."
There was silence.
Then:
"Your daughter is not in her room."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
"We thought she was with you."
The hallway suddenly felt cold.
"Who took her?"
The nurse’s voice became nervous.
"We don't know."
I ended the call.
Everyone saw my face.
Daniel stood immediately.
"Emma?"
I looked at him.
"Ruby is gone."
My mother started crying.
Claire went pale.
And Vanessa's name appeared on my phone screen.
A message.
No words.
Only a location.
I opened it.
It was an old address.
One I recognized.
Because I had spent twenty years believing nobody lived there anymore.
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then whispered:
"That's impossible."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
His face changed.
Because he knew something I didn't.
"Because that's where our father died."
I grabbed my jacket.
I didn't ask permission.
I didn't wait for anyone.
I walked toward the front door.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Only a child's breathing.
Ruby.
Then a woman's voice whispered:
"Emma, if you want your daughter back..."
A pause.
A door slammed somewhere in the background.
"...come alone."
The call ended.
May you like
And on the screen, a new message appeared.
"Your father was waiting for you."
