Chapter 6 - The Hospital Door That Opened Twice

Elena was on her feet before anyone could stop her.

Adrien stood too.

“Hospital security first.”

She nodded.

No argument.

They called.

Lucia was safe.

A nurse was physically standing beside her.

The photograph had been taken earlier.

That realization changed everything.

The sender wasn't threatening the baby in real time.

They were manipulating Elena.

Again.

She stared at the message.

“They want me to panic.”

Adrien nodded.

“So we don't.”

It was the most important change between them.

Old Adrien would have flooded the hospital with his own men.

Old Elena would have run.

Instead, they slowed down.

Verified facts.

Shared information.

Let police handle what belonged to police.

Rachel traced Naomi's access.

Adrien's executive assistant had called in sick that morning.

Her apartment was empty.

Her company laptop remained active remotely.

Police obtained the appropriate authorization to examine the corporate evidence.

The results were devastating.

Naomi had cloned Adrien's credentials.

Authorized the executive truck.

Accessed Elena's old prenatal provider.

Intercepted Margaret's letters.

But she wasn't Victor's mastermind.

She was his daughter.

Victor Hale had built a second generation into his revenge.

Naomi had entered Moretti Logistics eight years earlier under her mother's surname.

Worked upward.

Earned Adrien's trust.

Waited.

“She knew everything,” Adrien said.

“Schedules. passwords. Family.”

Elena looked at him.

“Not everything.”

He turned.

“She didn't know you'd actually respect my request to stay away.”

Adrien understood.

That had broken the pattern.

Victor expected Adrien to continue secretly tracking Elena.

Instead, Adrien stopped.

The packages became necessary because Victor lost access to her location.

Each package wasn't proof Adrien was watching.

It was evidence Victor was struggling to find her.

Elena almost laughed at the cruel irony.

The thing that made her fear Adrien most had actually begun because he finally respected her boundary.

They returned to the hospital under police supervision.

Lucia was safe.

Elena held her for nearly an hour.

Adrien sat beside them.

No speeches.

No promises.

Just presence.

Then Luca arrived.

He carried Sofia's original letter.

“I found something.”

A string of numbers appeared along the bottom.

Rachel recognized coordinates.

Not geographic coordinates.

Storage coordinates.

Warehouse aisle.

Rack.

Box.

They searched the old facility.

A sealed container was found.

Inside were original financial ledgers.

Victor's signature appeared repeatedly.

Enough evidence to support criminal charges.

But there was something else.

A photograph.

Victor and Naomi.

Taken recently.

Behind them was a recognizable location.

A small house outside Philadelphia.

Police moved quickly.

The property was empty.

But investigators recovered computers.

Those computers contained records of the entire campaign against Elena.

Fake prenatal documents.

Shipping histories.

Photographs.

Credential clones.

Messages.

Everything.

Naomi and Victor were now exposed.

Adrien thought the nightmare was ending.

It wasn't.

That evening, Elena walked slowly through the maternity corridor while Adrien pushed Lucia's bassinet.

They were preparing for discharge the next morning.

“You know what I want?” Elena asked.

“What?”

“A boring apartment.”

Adrien smiled.

“How boring?”

“Painfully boring.”

“No security gate?”

“Maybe a normal lock.”

“No private elevator?”

“Absolutely not.”

“No driver?”

“I own a car.”

He nodded solemnly.

“This lifestyle sounds terrifying.”

She laughed.

It was the first full laugh he had heard from her in months.

Then the maternity doors opened.

A woman stepped through.

Elena stopped.

Adrien did too.

Naomi.

She looked exhausted.

No weapon.

No threatening movement.

Her hands were visible.

Hospital security immediately approached.

Naomi raised them.

“I'm surrendering.”

Adrien stared at her.

“Why here?”

“Because Victor is coming.”

Police were called.

Naomi spoke quickly.

Her father had discovered the backup archive was gone.

He blamed her.

He intended to retrieve one final piece of evidence before disappearing.

“What evidence?” Elena asked.

Naomi looked at Lucia.

“The original 27B master ledger.”

“Where is it?”

Naomi swallowed.

“You already have it.”

Adrien frowned.

“No, we don't.”

“Yes.”

She pointed toward the baby blanket folded beneath Lucia.

Elena's blood ran cold.

The blanket.

The package from Pittsburgh.

She had carried it through three cities.

Washed it.

Packed it.

Brought it to the hospital.

Adrien lifted it carefully.

There was a thick seam along one edge.

Inside was a narrow waterproof sleeve.

Rachel opened it later under police supervision.

The original ledger was there.

Margaret had hidden it in the blanket months ago.

Victor had been chasing Elena because she unknowingly carried the one document that could prove everything.

Naomi began crying.

“My father knows.”

“How?” Adrien asked.

“I told him.”

Everyone stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because until yesterday, I still thought I could save him.”

She looked ashamed.

“I can't.”

Police secured the floor.

Naomi surrendered.

Victor was now the only missing piece.

Hours passed.

Nothing happened.

Near midnight, Elena woke.

Adrien was asleep in the chair.

Lucia rested beside her.

The corridor outside was silent.

Then Elena heard it.

Click.

The outer maternity door.

A pause.

Then another click.

The inner door.

Elena reached for the call button.

Before her finger touched it, someone whispered from the dark hallway:

May you like

“Elena Cruz?”

A shadow moved toward her room.
