Chapter 4 - The Name Behind MRL 27B

Adrien called Elena immediately.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

He was already running.

Luca followed.

“What happened?”

“Someone's at the hospital.”

They reached Adrien's car.

Rachel emerged from hers.

“What's wrong?”

“Elena stopped answering.”

Rachel drove.

Adrien called hospital security.

This time someone answered.

There had been an incident.

A woman had attempted to enter Elena's room using outdated executive visitor authorization linked to Moretti Logistics.

She had been stopped.

Elena and the baby were safe.

Adrien could breathe again.

“Who is the woman?”

The security supervisor hesitated.

“She says her name is Margaret Vale.”

Adrien and Luca looked at each other.

The real Margaret was supposed to be in Arizona.

When they arrived, Elena was furious.

Not frightened.

Furious.

“You left for forty minutes.”

“I know.”

“And suddenly your father's former assistant appears?”

“I know.”

“Stop saying you know.”

Adrien almost smiled.

Elena pointed toward the hall.

“Find out who she is.”

Margaret Vale sat in a security office.

She looked older than Adrien remembered, but unmistakably herself.

“What are you doing here?” he asked.

“Trying to stop this before someone makes the same mistake again.”

“What mistake?”

Margaret looked at Luca.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You look like Sofia.”

Luca stiffened.

“You knew my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

Margaret looked toward the closed door.

“Your mother discovered an account hidden behind 27B.”

“We know.”

“No. You know part of it.”

She explained.

27B had not merely hidden shipments.

It created parallel records.

One visible.

One private.

Sofia discovered that someone was using those private records to siphon money from Moretti Logistics.

Adrien's father found out.

Contrary to Luca's suspicion, he had tried to help Sofia expose it.

But before they could, Sofia died.

The investigation disappeared.

Adrien's father became convinced the person responsible was still inside the company.

So he continued the secret payments to Sofia's trust.

Not hush money.

Protection for Luca.

“Protection from whom?” Luca asked.

Margaret's face tightened.

“I never knew.”

Adrien leaned forward.

“You built the root recovery system.”

Margaret looked at him sharply.

“Who told you that?”

“Luca.”

“I helped design it.”

“Can it clone my credentials?”

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

“Who else knows how?”

Margaret stared at the table.

“One person.”

“Name.”

“Your father's former chief financial officer.”

Adrien frowned.

“He retired twelve years ago.”

“No.”

Margaret raised her eyes.

“He disappeared twelve years ago.”

“Who?”

She said the name.

“Victor Hale.”

Adrien remembered him.

Polished.

Patient.

Always smiling.

Victor had been present at nearly every childhood company event Adrien could remember.

Then one day he vanished.

Adrien's father claimed he had retired overseas.

Rachel searched public records.

No death certificate.

No current address.

Almost nothing.

Then Luca found a corporate vendor created six months earlier.

Hale Consulting Services.

The vendor had received tiny payments from several Moretti accounts.

Exactly when Elena's packages began.

Adrien looked at Margaret.

“Why Elena?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Because someone wanted your attention.”

“Why not contact me directly?”

“Because fear makes powerful people careless.”

Elena, listening from the doorway, answered before Adrien could.

“He wanted Adrien to start distrusting everyone.”

They turned.

Elena stood holding the baby.

Adrien immediately moved toward her.

She gave him a warning look.

“I'm fine.”

He stopped.

She continued.

“The packages made me think Adrien was following me. The hospital package made Adrien suspect Luca. Luca suspected Adrien because of the cloned credentials.”

Rachel nodded slowly.

“Divide everyone who could expose the truth.”

Elena looked at the photograph of Sofia.

“And use a pregnant woman because he knew Adrien would react emotionally.”

Adrien hated how accurate that sounded.

Margaret stared at Elena.

“You're smarter than Victor expected.”

“Good.”

For the first time, Elena felt something shift.

She had spent months running.

Now she wanted to stop.

Not recklessly.

Not because Adrien could protect her.

Because she was tired of letting an unseen person determine where she could live.

“What does Victor want?” she asked.

Margaret looked at the baby.

“The old account.”

“What account?”

Luca answered.

“The money stolen through 27B.”

“How much?”

Rachel checked the records.

Her expression changed.

“Originally? Around eight million.”

“And now?”

“Invested over decades?”

She turned the laptop.

“More than forty-three million.”

Elena stared.

“So this is about money.”

“Partly,” Margaret said.

“What else?”

“Evidence.”

Sofia had created a backup archive.

Victor never found it.

Adrien's father searched for years.

The clue to its location was believed to be hidden in the original 27B routing records.

Then Elena remembered the packages.

Different cities.

Different vendors.

Different objects.

“What if the packages weren't just tracking me?”

Everyone looked at her.

“What if they were giving us something?”

Adrien frowned.

“What?”

Elena listed them.

Vitamins.

Kitchen towels.

Baby blanket.

Then the hospital carton.

Luca began writing down vendor addresses.

Rachel pulled shipping data.

The origins formed a pattern.

Each package had passed through a different former Moretti facility.

Four facilities.

Each associated with one letter from Sofia's archived routing map.

Luca rearranged them.

R.

I.

V.

E.

“River,” Elena whispered.

Adrien thought of the warehouse.

The old River Warehouse.

They had already been there.

Luca opened the photograph of Sofia.

Behind her stood that exact building.

Adrien zoomed in.

A number was painted beside the loading door.

Below it, almost invisible:

B.

MRL 27B.

It wasn't only a routing code.

It was a location.

They returned to the warehouse with Rachel and an independent security team.

Elena stayed at the hospital by choice.

This time Adrien didn't argue.

At the warehouse, they found Bay 27.

Behind an old shelving unit was a narrow maintenance door.

Locked.

Luca used a key found in his mother's archived belongings.

It fit.

Inside was a tiny records room.

Dust covered everything.

A metal cabinet stood against the wall.

Adrien opened it.

Empty.

Except for one envelope.

Luca picked it up.

His name was written on the front.

LUCA.

His hands shook.

Inside was a letter from Sofia.

He read silently.

Then stopped.

“What?”

Luca handed it to Adrien.

The final paragraph contained a name.

Not Victor Hale.

Someone else.

Someone Sofia trusted enough to tell everything.

Margaret Vale.

Adrien slowly looked toward the warehouse entrance.

Margaret had insisted on coming.

But she was no longer standing behind them.

The outer door slammed.

Rachel ran toward it.

Locked.

Then the lights went out.

In the darkness, Luca whispered:

May you like

“She lied to us.”

And somewhere beyond the wall, a woman began unlocking the second door.
