Chapter 5 - The Secret Elena Never Told Adrien

Emergency lights flickered on.
Adrien reached the second door first.
It opened.
Nobody stood there.
Only a corridor leading outside.
Margaret was gone.
They called police.
Rachel turned over every document they had preserved.
For the first time, the investigation moved outside Moretti Logistics entirely.
Meanwhile, Luca read Sofia's letter.
His mother had trusted Margaret.
That was true.
But the letter contained a warning.
If anything happened to Sofia, Margaret knew where the backup archive was hidden.
That did not prove Margaret betrayed her.
It proved Margaret had lied about not knowing.
Adrien returned to Elena near midnight.
She was awake.
“So?”
“Margaret disappeared.”
“Of course she did.”
He sat beside her.
The baby slept between them.
Elena watched him.
“You look terrible.”
“Thank you.”
“You're welcome.”
Silence.
Then Elena said, “I owe you something.”
Adrien frowned.
“What?”
“The truth.”
He waited.
Elena looked at their daughter.
“I didn't leave only because of your security.”
Adrien said nothing.
“Two weeks before I disappeared, I received a medical envelope.”
His face changed.
“What envelope?”
“It contained copies of prenatal records.”
“Yours?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“A note.”
Elena swallowed.
“It said you had ordered private genetic testing.”
Adrien stared at her.
“I never did.”
“I know that now.”
“How?”
“Because the clinic confirmed yesterday that the document was fake.”
Adrien looked devastated.
“You thought I secretly tested whether the baby was mine?”
“Yes.”
“And you still called me.”
“I was in labor and terrified.”
He nodded.
Fair.
Painful, but fair.
Elena continued.
“The fake report made me believe you would never trust me.”
Adrien leaned back.
“Victor—or Margaret—wanted you gone before the packages started.”
“Maybe.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because at the time, every explanation from you sounded like another way of controlling the situation.”
Adrien accepted that too.
“I should have listened earlier.”
“Yes.”
“I should have trusted you to decide what safety meant for you.”
“Yes.”
“I loved you badly.”
Elena's eyes filled.
“That doesn't mean you didn't love me.”
He looked at her.
“No.”
She touched his hand.
“It means love wasn't enough.”
The words hurt.
But they were true.
Their daughter stirred.
Adrien smiled.
“Have you decided?”
“Lucia Sofia.”
Adrien looked surprised.
“For Luca's mother?”
“For a woman who tried to tell the truth.”
He nodded.
“I like it.”
The next morning brought the first breakthrough.
Police located Margaret's rental car.
Abandoned.
Inside was an old storage key.
The unit contained boxes of documents Margaret had preserved for decades.
She had not destroyed Sofia's evidence.
She had hidden it.
Rachel examined the records.
They proved Victor Hale had stolen money.
They also showed Margaret had helped Sofia gather evidence.
So why had Margaret lied?
Then they found an audio recording.
Sofia's voice.
“If you're hearing this, Margaret kept her promise.”
Luca closed his eyes.
The recording explained everything.
Sofia discovered Victor's theft.
Adrien's father agreed to help.
Margaret created duplicate backups.
Before they could expose Victor, Sofia went into premature labor and died from complications.
Victor realized the evidence existed.
He threatened Margaret.
She disappeared from corporate life but continued secretly preserving the archive.
Adrien's father protected Luca financially while searching for Victor.
Victor vanished.
Until six months ago.
“Why come back now?” Elena asked.
Rachel found the answer.
Moretti Logistics was preparing to migrate all legacy systems.
Within months, 27B's hidden records would have been discovered.
Victor had to act first.
The packages were designed to frighten Elena, destabilize Adrien, and lure Luca into accessing old systems.
Every reaction created digital noise Victor could hide behind.
But Margaret had intercepted parts of the scheme.
Some packages came from Victor.
Others came from Margaret.
“Which ones?” Adrien asked.
Rachel compared handwriting and routing.
The hospital carton was Margaret's.
Elena stared.
“She put that box there?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To force you to call Adrien.”
Elena was furious.
“She terrified me while I was in labor.”
“Yes,” Rachel said. “And that was wrong. Even if she believed she was helping.”
That mattered.
Good intentions did not erase harm.
Adrien looked at Elena.
She noticed.
“You're thinking about us.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He almost laughed.
Then Rachel's phone rang.
Police had found Margaret.
Alive.
She had voluntarily walked into a station.
She wanted to talk.
Only to Elena.
Adrien immediately said, “No.”
Elena looked at him.
He caught himself.
Then sighed.
“Sorry.”
“Better.”
“What do you want to do?”
Elena considered it.
“I'll talk to her.”
Adrien nodded.
“At the station?”
“Yes.”
“With whoever you choose present.”
“Yes.”
“No argument.”
Elena smiled.
“You really are learning.”
At the station, Margaret looked exhausted.
She apologized first.
Not strategically.
Not conditionally.
“I frightened you,” she told Elena. “I convinced myself it was necessary.”
“It wasn't.”
“I know.”
“Why me?”
“Because Adrien wouldn't listen to anonymous warnings.”
“You could have tried.”
“I did.”
Adrien frowned.
“When?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Three years ago.”
She gave Rachel a file.
Adrien opened it.
Inside were copies of letters sent to his office.
Every one marked RECEIVED.
Every one disappeared before reaching him.
Someone inside the company had been intercepting Margaret's warnings for years.
“Victor?” Adrien asked.
Margaret shook her head.
“He couldn't do that from outside.”
Everyone went silent.
There was still someone inside Moretti Logistics helping him.
Someone with access to Adrien's correspondence.
Executive fleet.
Legacy systems.
Hospital information.
Luca began listing names.
Then Margaret interrupted.
“You're missing one.”
“Who?”
She looked at Adrien.
“Your executive assistant.”
Adrien froze.
“Naomi?”
Margaret nodded.
“She worked for Victor before she worked for you.”
Adrien reached for his phone.
At that exact moment, Elena's phone vibrated.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Lucia sleeping in her hospital bassinet.
Taken minutes earlier.
Elena stopped breathing.
They were at the police station.
Lucia was supposed to be in a secured hospital nursery.
