Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Wasn’t His Mistress

The key opened a private records room beneath Whitmore Development headquarters.

At midnight, we entered through the underground garage.

Stephen led us.

Daniel followed.

Margaret and I came last.

“You’ve been here before?” Daniel asked.

“Thirty years ago.”

The hidden door was behind a paneled wall in Richard’s former office.

Stephen inserted the key.

Inside were filing cabinets.

Old computers.

Ledgers.

And photographs.

Daniel whispered, “Jesus.”

Stephen shook his head.

“Your father trusted paper more than people.”

We searched for hours.

Then I found Claire’s name.

BENNETT, CLAIRE.

Daniel came beside me.

Inside were photographs of Claire.

Noah.

Her apartment.

Her workplace.

Even Daniel.

“This continued after Richard died,” I said.

Stephen nodded.

“Hale.”

Victor Hale had inherited Richard’s secrets.

And apparently continued monitoring anyone who could threaten the company.

Then Claire called.

“I’m downstairs.”

Daniel stared at the phone.

“I told you to stay with Noah.”

“He’s with police.”

She arrived ten minutes later.

When she entered the records room, she looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“I owe you the truth.”

I almost laughed.

“That phrase is becoming popular.”

Claire took a breath.

“Daniel didn’t ask me to meet him at the mall.”

“I know.”

“There’s more.”

Daniel frowned.

“Claire.”

She ignored him.

“Three weeks ago, I asked Daniel to leave you.”

Silence.

I looked at him.

He looked furious.

“Why?”

Claire answered.

“Because I thought someone was watching Noah, and I believed it was connected to the Whitmores. I wanted Daniel to disappear with us until we understood why.”

“And?”

“He refused.”

I looked at Daniel.

“What did you say?”

Claire’s eyes met mine.

“He said he wouldn’t abandon his wife.”

My anger did not vanish.

But another piece clicked into place.

“The hand-holding?”

Claire looked embarrassed.

“I had just received the message about Noah.”

“You were terrified.”

“Yes.”

Daniel added quietly, “She almost collapsed.”

So the image that had detonated my marriage had not been what I believed.

But the explosion had exposed everything underneath.

I looked at Claire.

“Do you still love him?”

She considered the question.

“I love who we were.”

Daniel looked down.

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“No.”

She smiled sadly.

“I don’t think I love the man he is now.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Thanks.”

“You needed that.”

For the first time, I laughed.

It surprised all of us.

Then Stephen called from across the room.

“Found it.”

A ledger.

Victor Hale’s payments.

Judges.

Officials.

Consultants.

Shell companies.

And one recent payment.

Two hundred thousand dollars.

Recipient:

D. WHITMORE.

I stared.

Daniel went pale.

“That isn’t me.”

Stephen looked at him.

“It uses your authorization code.”

“I didn’t authorize it.”

Margaret examined the date.

“December third.”

Daniel was with me that night.

At my company Christmas dinner.

Someone had used his credentials.

“Hale is framing him,” I said.

Stephen nodded.

“For everything.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

An email.

SUBJECT: RESIGN BY 9 A.M.

Attached was a copy of the ledger.

Then another message arrived.

THIS ENDS IF EMILY SIGNS OVER THE CARTER TRUST.

Daniel looked at me.

Now we understood.

This had never been about Claire.

Or Noah.

Or even Stephen.

Someone wanted what my father had protected.

My ownership.

My leverage.

My name.

Then the hidden-room door slammed shut behind us.

May you like

The lights went out.

And smoke began pouring beneath the door.
