Chapter 6 - The Last Black Lantern

Claire didn't move.

Daniel froze near the hangar entrance.

Mercer and Vale remained outside the narrowing doors.

"Claire!" Daniel shouted.

"Stay back!"

The doors sealed.

Evelyn sat twenty yards away.

The blinking red light beneath her chair accelerated.

Voss's voice filled the hangar.

"You've always been predictable where family is concerned."

Claire scanned the space.

No obvious explosives.

Which meant the blinking device might be a trigger, transmitter, or bluff.

"Where are you?"

"Watching."

"Of course."

"Your father asked the same question."

Claire's jaw tightened.

"You're running out of leverage."

"I have your mother."

"You had Daniel for four years. Didn't stop you losing him."

Silence.

She'd touched something.

Voss hated losing control.

Claire moved sideways.

The red light changed rhythm.

Motion sensor.

She stopped.

Evelyn whispered, "Floor."

Claire looked down.

Pressure grid.

Old training technology.

Designed to detect movement through load shifts.

Claire smiled slightly.

Voss said, "Something amusing?"

"You used equipment my team trained on."

Daniel pounded against the hangar door.

"Claire!"

She ignored him.

Black Lantern had practiced crossing reactive floor systems.

Not by avoiding movement.

By distributing it.

Claire removed her boots.

Then her jacket.

She tossed the jacket ahead.

No response.

Weight threshold.

She crawled low, distributing pressure across forearms and knees.

The blinking remained stable.

Voss stopped talking.

Claire reached Evelyn.

"Mom."

Evelyn stared at her.

"My girl."

Claire nearly broke.

Not now.

She examined the device.

No explosive.

A transmitter connected to the chair.

"He's tracking whether you stand."

Evelyn nodded.

Claire cut the restraints without lifting her.

"Can you crawl?"

"At my age?"

"Mom."

Evelyn smiled despite everything.

"I raised two of you. I can crawl."

They moved together.

Halfway to safety, the hangar lights died.

Night-vision goggles would have been nice.

Claire didn't need them.

She remembered the layout.

They reached the emergency side door.

Locked electronically.

Evelyn whispered, "Your father taught you better than doors."

Claire almost smiled.

She removed the hinge pin using a metal clip from the restraint assembly.

Minutes later they emerged outside.

Daniel saw their mother.

He stopped.

The reunion was raw.

He hugged her like a child.

Evelyn held both of them.

For a few seconds, nothing else mattered.

Then Vale said, "Where's Voss?"

Evelyn answered.

"Fort Liberty."

Mercer frowned.

"Why?"

"Underground continuity site. Meridian controls maintenance contracts."

Claire understood.

A secure government facility.

Voss wanted access to classified systems.

Her father's files weren't just evidence.

They contained old credentials and architecture diagrams.

"He doesn't want the files destroyed," Claire said. "He wants what's inside them."

Evelyn nodded.

"Your father embedded a master map of compromised systems."

Vale stared.

"With that, Voss could erase every trace of his network."

"Or expand it," Daniel said.

They moved quickly.

Vale contacted trusted federal authorities.

Mercer mobilized a small security element.

Claire refused an army.

"Voss owns people inside the system."

"Then who do you trust?" Mercer asked.

Claire looked at Daniel.

Her mother.

Vale.

Then Mercer.

"People who've already been targeted."

By midnight, they were headed toward Fort Liberty.

Evelyn stayed under guard at a secure location.

Before Claire left, her mother held her hand.

"I owe you explanations."

"Later."

"I should have told you about your father."

"Later."

Evelyn touched Claire's face.

"Bring your brother back."

Claire looked at Daniel.

"That's becoming a family tradition."

They arrived at the continuity site before dawn.

The access tunnel was disguised as a utility structure.

Mercer used command authority to enter.

No alarms.

Too easy.

Claire knew Voss expected them.

Deep underground, they found empty security posts.

Then a control center.

Dozens of screens.

Voss stood alone in front of them.

Older than Claire expected.

Gray suit.

Calm expression.

No weapon visible.

Daniel moved left.

Vale right.

Mercer stayed near the entrance.

Claire walked forward.

"Done hiding?"

Voss smiled.

"I was never hiding."

"You kidnapped my mother."

"Protected her."

Claire nearly laughed.

"Everyone loves that word."

Voss looked at Daniel.

"Your brother understands."

Daniel raised his weapon.

"No, I don't."

"Four years and you learned nothing."

"I learned exactly who you are."

Voss turned to Vale.

"And Nathan. Still chasing redemption."

Vale said, "You're finished, Charles."

"Am I?"

Voss touched a control.

Screens filled with personnel files.

Thousands.

Military families.

Addresses.

Deployments.

Vulnerabilities.

Claire felt sick.

"This is what Meridian collected?"

"This is what governments collect. I simply made it useful."

"You sold it."

"I controlled it."

"For money?"

Voss looked genuinely offended.

"Money is for small men."

"Then why?"

"Influence."

He explained it without shame.

Knowing where a commander lived.

Who had a sick child.

Who carried gambling debt.

Who was having an affair.

Who could be pressured.

Who could be promoted.

Who could be ruined.

A silent empire built from weakness.

Black Lantern had threatened to expose it.

So Voss destroyed the team.

Claire asked, "Why keep Daniel alive?"

"Because your father hid the master key."

"And you thought Daniel knew."

"He eventually did."

Daniel stiffened.

Claire looked at him.

"You knew?"

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"I found it in captivity."

"Where?"

He touched his dog tag.

Claire understood.

The dent.

Her childhood accident.

The tag wasn't merely sentimental.

Her father had modified it.

Daniel removed it.

Voss's eyes sharpened.

"There."

Daniel smiled.

"You never figured it out."

Voss's calm cracked.

He reached toward his jacket.

Claire moved.

Mercer shouted.

Gunfire.

Voss's weapon skidded away.

Daniel tackled him.

Vale secured the system.

For a moment, it seemed finished.

Then alarms sounded.

Voss laughed from the floor.

"You think this is mine?"

Claire looked at the screens.

Files began deleting.

Mercer moved toward the console.

A message appeared.

REMOTE PURGE INITIATED.

Vale shouted, "Disconnect the network!"

Daniel smashed a cable rack.

Not enough.

Claire looked at the dog tag.

Master key.

"Give it to me."

Daniel tossed it.

Claire found the indentation.

Pressed.

A microscopic storage strip emerged.

She inserted it into the console.

The system froze.

Then a prompt:

LANTERN VII AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Claire stared.

Biometric.

She placed her thumb on the scanner.

AUTHORIZED.

Voss stopped laughing.

Claire looked at him.

"My father made me the key."

"No," Daniel said softly. "He made sure only you could choose what happened to it."

Claire saw two options.

PURGE ARCHIVE.

TRANSMIT ARCHIVE TO INSPECTOR GENERAL / DOJ SECURE NETWORK.

Voss smiled.

"If you transmit it, you'll destroy hundreds of careers. Maybe operations. Maybe lives."

Vale said nothing.

Mercer said nothing.

Daniel looked at Claire.

The choice belonged to her.

For years, people had hidden truth to "protect" her.

Now she could do the same.

Claire selected TRANSMIT.

Voss screamed.

"No!"

Upload began.

12%.

24%.

41%.

Then the lights flickered.

Voss broke free.

He lunged toward the console.

Daniel intercepted him.

They crashed into a railing.

The upload reached 73%.

Voss pulled a concealed knife.

Claire shouted.

Daniel caught his arm.

They struggled.

90%.

Voss shoved Daniel backward.

The railing broke.

Daniel fell over the edge.

Claire grabbed his wrist.

His body hung above a twenty-foot maintenance shaft.

The upload reached 99%.

Voss stood behind Claire.

He raised the knife.

Claire couldn't release Daniel.

Daniel looked up at her.

"Claire!"

She heard Voss step closer.

Then a gunshot.

Voss froze.

His knife dropped.

Major General Mercer stood behind him, weapon steady.

Voss collapsed.

Upload complete.

Daniel dangled from Claire's hand.

She gritted her teeth.

Mercer grabbed her arm.

Vale helped.

Together they pulled Daniel up.

He rolled onto the floor, laughing breathlessly.

Claire hit his chest.

"That's twice."

"What?"

"Twice you've made me think you died."

Daniel smiled.

"I'll stop."

Federal agents entered minutes later.

Voss was alive.

Wounded.

Arrested.

The network archive was transmitted beyond his control.

Claire thought it was over.

Then Vale approached with one final file.

"There's something you need to see."

Claire opened it.

It was an authorization order.

Black Lantern termination.

Signed six years earlier.

Charles Voss's name appeared at the bottom.

But above it was another signature.

Someone who had authorized Voss.

Claire stared at the name.

Her expression changed.

Daniel read over her shoulder.

"No."

Mercer whispered, "That's impossible."

May you like

The signature belonged to the current Secretary of Defense.

And his aircraft had just landed at Fort Liberty.
