Chapter 3 - The Seventh Lantern

Emergency lights flickered red.

Claire dropped instantly.

"Caleb?"

"I'm here."

"Mercer?"

No answer.

Claire crawled toward the sound of impact.

Her hand found fabric.

A shoulder.

Mercer groaned.

"Hit?"

"No. Floor."

The bullet had struck a monitor.

A warning shot.

Someone wanted panic.

Claire hated enemies who understood psychology.

Caleb restored partial power.

Daniel was gone from the screens.

A countdown replaced him.

04:59.

04:58.

Mercer stood.

"Explosives?"

"Maybe," Claire said. "Maybe deletion."

Caleb connected a diagnostic cable.

"It's wiping the servers."

"Copy everything."

"Five minutes isn't enough."

"Then find the one file they don't want us to have."

Claire searched cabinets while Caleb attacked the system.

Mercer followed her.

"You believed him."

"I believe evidence."

"Daniel accused me."

"And you're still breathing."

He stopped.

Claire faced him.

"Tell me where you were."

Mercer exhaled.

"Black Lantern's final mission."

"Yes."

"I was aviation liaison."

"You were in theater?"

"Yes."

"You told me you'd only read reports."

"I lied."

Claire's gaze hardened.

"Why?"

"Because the order sending your extraction aircraft to the wrong location came through my office."

Claire stared.

"Did you issue it?"

"No."

"Could you have stopped it?"

"I don't know."

"Wrong answer."

"I was a colonel receiving authenticated instructions from General Vale."

The name changed everything.

"Vale ordered the route change."

"Yes."

"And you complied."

"Yes."

Claire stepped closer.

"My brother was captured because you complied."

Mercer looked away.

"I've lived with that every day."

"You got promoted."

The cruelty landed.

Mercer didn't defend himself.

Caleb interrupted.

"I found something."

A folder appeared.

LANTERN VII.

Encrypted.

Claire approached.

"Open it."

"I need a key."

"Try Daniel."

"No."

"My service number."

"No."

"Vale."

Nothing.

Caleb looked at Claire.

"What matters to you and Daniel that nobody else knows?"

Claire remembered childhood.

Their father.

A mechanic from Ohio who taught them chess.

Their mother's old station wagon.

Daniel's ridiculous dog named Sergeant.

Then one detail.

The promise they made before Claire's first deployment.

If one was ever in danger and couldn't say it directly, they'd use the same phrase.

North Star.

Caleb typed it.

Access granted.

Inside was a single personnel file.

No photograph.

No name.

Designation:

LANTERN SEVEN.

Status:

DEEP COVER.

Controller:

DANIEL MADDOX.

Claire whispered, "He was protecting someone."

Mercer read the next line.

"Activation condition: compromise of Black Lantern."

Caleb scrolled.

Seven's mission was to infiltrate the network Black Lantern had been hunting from inside.

No one knew the identity except Daniel.

Not Claire.

Not Vale.

Not command.

"That's why Daniel survived," Claire said. "They kept him alive to find Seven."

The countdown reached 01:12.

Caleb copied the file.

"We move."

They escaped through an emergency tunnel seconds before the servers burned themselves.

Outside, smoke rose from ventilation shafts.

Claire looked back.

Their enemy had just destroyed years of evidence.

But not everything.

Caleb held up the drive.

"I got Seven."

In the SUV, they discovered the file contained one additional clue.

A recurring payment routed through Meridian to an officer assigned to Fort Benning.

Claire's stomach sank.

"Someone inside selection."

Caleb nodded.

"High clearance."

"Name?"

"Hidden behind an account number."

Mercer leaned forward.

"Can you trace it?"

"Give me time."

Claire watched the highway.

"Someone knew exactly when we left."

Mercer glanced at Caleb.

Then at Claire.

"You think we have a leak."

"We have at least one."

Back at Fort Benning before dawn, Claire entered her quarters alone.

Nothing looked disturbed.

That worried her.

She opened the closet.

Clothing aligned.

Boots positioned precisely.

Then she saw something on her pillow.

A photograph.

Daniel and Claire as children.

Their mother had taken it outside a county fair.

No military archive had that picture.

Only family.

On the back, in Daniel's handwriting:

YOU WERE NEVER THE SECRET.

Claire sat slowly.

A knock sounded.

Three taps.

Pause.

Two taps.

Their childhood code.

Claire stood.

Impossible.

Another three taps.

Pause.

Two.

She approached the door.

"Who is it?"

No answer.

Her hand hovered above the knob.

Then a whisper came through the wood.

"Claire. Don't scream."

Her breath stopped.

Daniel.

She unlocked the deadbolt.

Opened the door.

A man in a baseball cap stood in the hallway.

Older.

Scar along his jaw.

But unmistakably her brother.

Claire couldn't move.

Daniel looked at her.

For six years she had imagined what she'd say if she'd had one more minute with him.

Now there were no words.

She hit him.

Hard.

Daniel staggered.

"Okay."

She hit him again.

"You were alive."

"I know."

"Six years."

"I know."

"Mom died thinking you were dead."

Pain crossed his face.

"I know."

Claire slapped him.

Then grabbed him and pulled him into an embrace so violently he almost lost balance.

Daniel held her.

Neither spoke.

Finally Claire pulled away.

"Explain."

"Not here."

He checked the hall.

"Where's Mercer?"

"Why?"

"You can't trust him."

"He saved my life tonight."

"That doesn't make him clean."

Claire locked the door.

"Vale?"

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Part of it."

"Who is Seven?"

He stared at her.

"You found the file."

"Who is Seven?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I can't tell you."

Claire laughed in disbelief.

"You came back from the dead and you're still protecting secrets?"

"I'm protecting you."

"From what?"

"From becoming the next person they bury."

Claire stepped toward him.

"Three people are already dead."

"I know."

"Were you involved?"

His face changed.

"Claire."

"Answer me."

"No."

She studied him.

Daniel looked exhausted.

Not merely tired.

Years older.

"What happened after Al-Qaim?"

He sat.

"We were sold."

"By Vale?"

"Vale authorized the route change, but he wasn't the architect."

"Who was?"

Daniel looked toward the window.

"The network had people above Vale."

"How high?"

"High enough that if I give you one name without proof, we'll both be arrested before sunrise."

"Then give me proof."

"That's why Seven exists."

Claire stared.

"Seven has it."

"Seven became the proof."

"What does that mean?"

Daniel leaned forward.

"The network wasn't selling weapons. It was selling access."

"To what?"

"Military identities. Operational routes. classified systems. Personnel vulnerabilities. Enough information to make American units predictable."

Claire's face tightened.

"And Black Lantern found them."

"Almost."

"So they destroyed us."

"Yes."

"You let me believe you died."

"I had no choice."

"You always have a choice."

Daniel flinched.

She regretted it, but not enough to take it back.

He reached into his jacket and removed a metal key.

Old-fashioned.

Stamped 214.

"Take this."

"What is it?"

"Locker key."

"Where?"

"Columbus bus terminal."

"What's inside?"

"Everything you need if I don't make it through tomorrow."

Claire froze.

"Tomorrow?"

Daniel stood.

"They know I'm here."

"Then stay."

"I can't."

"You're not disappearing again."

"Claire—"

"No."

He smiled sadly.

"Still giving orders."

"I was your commander."

"I remember."

"Then follow one."

Daniel touched her shoulder.

"I spent six years making sure you weren't dragged back into this."

"And then somebody brought me into selection."

"That wasn't me."

Claire stared.

"Who sent the message?"

"I don't know."

Daniel looked genuinely afraid.

That surprised her.

"If it wasn't you, and it wasn't Mercer, then someone else knew enough to bring me here."

"Yes."

"Seven?"

"Maybe."

Claire heard footsteps outside.

Daniel tensed.

He moved behind the door.

Claire reached toward the pistol locked in her bedside safe.

The footsteps stopped.

A piece of paper slid underneath.

Then the person walked away.

Claire picked it up.

Three words.

COME ALONE, SEVEN.

Her blood chilled.

She looked at Daniel.

"You told me I wasn't Seven."

"I said you weren't the secret."

"That's not the same thing."

Daniel's silence answered too much.

Claire stepped toward him.

"Who am I?"

Before Daniel could respond, Claire's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A distorted voice said, "Captain Maddox, bring your brother to Hangar Four."

Claire looked at Daniel.

The voice continued.

"If you want to know why he was really kept alive, come before sunrise."

The call ended.

Daniel had gone pale.

Claire whispered, "What's at Hangar Four?"

Daniel stared toward the window.

Then headlights swept across the room.

A black SUV stopped outside.

The rear door opened.

Major General Mercer stepped out.

May you like

Beside him was Lieutenant General Nathan Vale.

And Vale was looking directly at Claire's window.
