Chapter 5 - The Lie Daniel Carried

No one moved.

Claire stared at the screen.

Her mother's image flickered.

The recording was old.

Not live.

A timestamp appeared.

Three years and eight months earlier.

Four months before her mother's reported death.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"You knew she made this."

He didn't answer.

Claire grabbed his jacket.

"You knew."

"Yes."

Mercer stepped away, giving them space.

Vale watched carefully.

The video continued.

Claire's mother, Evelyn Maddox, sat in their old kitchen.

"I don't know how much they'll tell you, Claire. Probably very little. That's how men like Nathan Vale survive. They turn silence into patriotism."

Vale winced.

Evelyn continued.

"But your father wasn't a mechanic."

Claire froze.

Her father had died when she was seventeen.

Heart attack.

Or so she thought.

"He worked intelligence. He discovered the same network years before Black Lantern existed. He tried to expose it. They killed him."

Claire sat down.

Too many dead people were returning as lies.

Her mother continued.

"Daniel found his files. That's why he joined. That's why you followed."

Claire looked at Daniel.

"You knew about Dad."

"Yes."

"Since when?"

"Since I was nineteen."

"You let me believe—"

"I was trying to protect you."

She almost laughed.

Again that sentence.

Protection had become the excuse people used whenever they stole her right to know her own life.

The video continued.

"The person who destroyed Black Lantern wasn't General Vale. But Vale knows who it was. He has always known."

Claire turned toward Vale.

His face was grim.

"Who?"

Vale said nothing.

"Who?"

Mercer stepped forward.

"Nathan."

Vale looked at Daniel.

Then Claire.

"Your father identified a man who later became one of the highest-ranking civilians overseeing special operations."

"Name."

"Director Charles Voss."

Claire remembered Caleb's last word.

Director.

Vale continued.

"Voss built Meridian through intermediaries. He controlled appointments. Contracts. Access."

"Why didn't you expose him?"

"We had suspicions. Not proof."

"My father died for proof."

"Your father hid the proof."

"Where?"

"We never found it."

Daniel whispered, "Mom did."

Everyone turned.

He pointed at the screen.

Evelyn was holding a small object.

A brass chess knight.

Claire recognized it.

Her father's favorite piece.

Evelyn said, "Your father always told you the knight was the most dangerous piece because it attacked from where people weren't looking."

Claire remembered.

The chess set.

Still boxed in storage.

Daniel looked at her.

"Where is it?"

"My apartment."

They drove back to Claire's quarters.

The chess set sat inside an old wooden case.

She opened it.

Every piece was there.

Except the knight.

Claire stared.

"I never removed it."

Mercer said, "Then someone already searched."

Daniel checked the room.

Nothing else missing.

Claire remembered the photo left on her pillow.

Whoever placed it had been inside.

Maybe they'd taken the knight.

Then she noticed the queen.

Slightly crooked.

She lifted it.

A tiny memory chip fell from its hollow base.

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Dad never trusted obvious clues."

They loaded the chip on an isolated system.

Files appeared.

Financial records.

Personnel lists.

Recorded calls.

Voss.

Meridian.

Twenty years of evidence.

Enough to destroy careers.

Maybe administrations.

Claire opened the newest file.

It had been added four days ago.

"Someone accessed this recently."

Daniel frowned.

"How?"

The file was audio.

Claire played it.

Caleb's voice.

"Director Voss, Maddox took the bait. She's entering selection."

Then Voss.

"Good. Mercer will expose her."

Claire looked at Mercer.

He paled.

The recording continued.

Caleb asked, "And after that?"

Voss responded.

"She'll lead us to Seven."

Claire whispered, "They never knew Seven was me."

Vale shook his head.

"Not until now."

The audio continued.

Caleb said, "What about Daniel?"

Voss laughed.

"Daniel will do exactly what he's done for six years. Protect his sister. That's why we let him escape."

Daniel went rigid.

Claire looked at him.

"You didn't escape?"

His face crumbled.

He had believed he did.

Voss had released him.

Every action Daniel took afterward had been anticipated.

Claire understood the trap.

"They used Daniel to lead them to me."

Mercer nodded.

"And used you to lead them to the archive."

Vale's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Voss's voice filled the room.

"Nathan."

Vale's face hardened.

"Charles."

Claire felt a chill.

Voss continued.

"You've made quite a mess."

"You murdered American personnel."

"So dramatic."

"We have evidence."

"No. You have fragments."

Claire looked at the screen containing her father's files.

Voss didn't know.

That was their advantage.

Vale said, "What do you want?"

"Claire."

Daniel stepped forward.

"No."

Voss laughed.

"There you are, Daniel."

Claire took the phone.

"You've been looking for me."

Silence.

Then Voss said, "You sound like your father."

"Did you kill him?"

"No."

Claire frowned.

Voss continued.

"I merely gave the order."

Daniel's hands clenched.

Claire kept her voice calm.

"Why?"

"Because he thought institutions were clean things that could survive truth."

"And you don't?"

"I know better."

"You destroyed Black Lantern."

"I corrected an error."

"You tortured Daniel."

"He was remarkably stubborn."

Claire looked at her brother.

Daniel's eyes told her not to react.

She understood.

Keep him talking.

"You killed Walsh, Keating, Moreno."

"They became liabilities."

"And Caleb?"

"Caleb made his choice."

"Where are you?"

Voss chuckled.

"Closer than you think."

The line disconnected.

Mercer immediately contacted security.

Too late.

The building's fire alarms activated.

Doors automatically unlocked.

Crowds began moving.

Claire recognized the tactic.

Chaos.

Cover.

Daniel went to the window.

"Vehicle at the east entrance."

Vale checked another exit.

Claire secured the memory chip.

"We separate."

"No," Daniel said.

"They expect us together."

Mercer nodded.

"Claire's right."

Vale looked at her.

"What's your plan?"

She finally felt something she hadn't felt since Black Lantern.

Clarity.

"Stop running."

She contacted the selection commander and ordered the entire unit to assemble at the training auditorium.

Mercer stared.

"You want an audience?"

"Voss wanted me exposed."

She looked at him.

"Let's expose someone else."

Two hours later, hundreds of military personnel filled the auditorium.

Claire stood backstage.

Daniel beside her.

"You sure?"

"No."

"Good."

She smiled faintly.

"Why is that good?"

"Because you were always scary when you weren't sure."

She almost laughed.

For the first time in six years, they felt like brother and sister instead of survivor and ghost.

Mercer stepped onto the stage.

He spoke about integrity.

Duty.

Corruption.

Then Claire appeared.

Whispers spread.

Everyone had heard about the general being dropped in the locker room.

Claire approached the microphone.

"My name is Captain Claire Maddox."

She paused.

"Six years ago, I commanded a unit that officially never existed."

Silence.

Daniel looked at her.

This was the moment she stopped hiding.

"That unit was betrayed."

She uploaded selected evidence.

Screens displayed Meridian transactions.

Names.

Dates.

Voss's connections.

Phones throughout the auditorium began buzzing.

People were recording.

Too many witnesses now.

Exactly what Voss feared.

Claire continued.

"The people responsible believed secrecy protected them."

She looked at Mercer.

"Today secrecy protects them no longer."

Applause didn't come.

Good.

This wasn't a speech meant for applause.

Suddenly the auditorium screens went black.

Claire stopped.

A new video appeared.

Live.

Director Charles Voss sat at a desk.

He smiled.

"Captain Maddox."

Security personnel scrambled.

Voss continued.

"Very moving."

Claire stared at the screen.

"You're finished."

"No."

Behind Voss, someone was dragged into frame.

Claire's mother.

Alive.

Older.

Terrified.

Claire forgot everything.

Daniel whispered, "Mom?"

Evelyn looked into the camera.

"Claire."

Daniel staggered forward.

"No."

Voss smiled.

"You really should have verified the body before burying your mother."

Claire couldn't breathe.

Voss leaned toward the camera.

"Bring me the original files, Captain."

He placed a handgun against Evelyn's shoulder.

"Or this time, your family really does die."

The feed cut.

Claire turned toward Daniel.

He was crying.

Not silently.

Not carefully.

Six years of control broke at once.

Claire grabbed his shoulders.

"We find her."

"How?"

Claire looked at the final frame.

Something behind Voss.

A window.

Runway lights.

Hangar doors.

Then she recognized the aircraft reflected in the glass.

The Black Lantern helicopter.

She turned toward Mercer.

"Hangar Four."

They ran.

When Claire reached the hangar, the main doors were open.

The helicopter was gone.

But a single chair stood in the middle of the floor.

Her mother was tied to it.

Alive.

Claire rushed forward.

Evelyn lifted her head.

"Don't."

Claire stopped.

A red light blinked beneath the chair.

Evelyn whispered, "He wired the room."

Then the hangar doors began closing behind Claire.

May you like

And Voss's voice came through the speakers.

"Welcome home, Lantern Seven."
