Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Camera

Luca moved first.

The photographer grabbed Elena.

A knife flashed.

"Nobody moves."

Avery recognized him now.

He had photographed her all evening.

Ordered her to move backward.

Asked her to lift the bouquet.

Placed her exactly where he wanted.

Luca's voice was calm.

"Let her go."

The photographer smiled.

"You Morettis always believed calmness made you powerful."

"Who are you?"

"Ask Diane."

Everyone looked at Avery's mother.

Diane whispered a name.

"Raymond."

Avery stared.

Uncle Raymond.

The relative who had joked about her weight for years.

The man who attended Christmas dinners, birthdays, funerals.

He had shaved his beard and lost weight, but now Avery saw him.

Raymond Bennett.

Edward's younger half brother.

"Surprise," Raymond said.

Avery felt sick.

"You put the key in my bouquet."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because only you could open the boxes."

"Why tonight?"

Raymond looked toward Claire.

"Because tonight every remaining piece finally came together."

Daniel stepped forward.

Raymond pressed the knife closer to Elena.

"Don't."

Daniel stopped.

Raymond smiled.

"Your father learned that lesson."

Daniel's face changed.

"Where is he?"

"Alive."

Claire looked at Daniel.

Raymond laughed.

"Everyone in this family loves pretending dead people are dead."

Avery hated him instantly.

"What do you want?"

"The ledger."

"We don't have it."

"But now you know how to find it."

Avery looked at Elena.

Her mother subtly shook her head.

Raymond noticed.

"Don't."

He pushed Elena forward.

Then the lights died.

Luca moved.

Avery heard a crash.

Daniel shouted.

When emergency lights flickered on, Raymond was gone.

Elena was free.

Luca's hand was bleeding.

But Avery barely noticed.

Elena was standing in front of her.

Her mother.

Avery had imagined this moment without knowing she was imagining it.

Every childhood question about why she didn't look like Claire.

Every strange silence.

Every photograph that seemed incomplete.

Elena reached toward her.

Stopped.

"I'm sorry."

Avery cried.

"Thirty-two years?"

"I watched you."

"That's not the same as raising me."

"No."

"You could have come back."

"No."

Avery wanted to hate her.

Instead she saw the photographs.

Decades of watching.

Fear.

Sacrifice.

Loneliness.

"Why?"

"Because Raymond knew you existed."

Elena explained everything.

Raymond had discovered Edward and Elena were collecting evidence against a network laundering money through shipping companies.

Victor Mercer had initially been involved.

Then he tried to leave.

Raymond threatened his family.

Edward planned to expose them.

On the night Edward died, Raymond chased him.

But Raymond hadn't forced Edward's car from the road.

Victor had.

To save him.

Victor had rammed Raymond's vehicle, and Edward swerved.

The crash was accidental.

Edward survived long enough to speak to Luca.

That was the truth Luca had hidden.

Avery looked at him.

"You said someone forced him off the road."

"I believed Victor caused it intentionally."

"You didn't know?"

"No."

Elena confirmed it.

"Victor spent eleven years trying to prove Raymond caused everything."

Daniel looked devastated.

"My father was protecting Avery?"

"Yes."

"Then where is he?"

Elena looked toward the hidden staircase.

"Raymond has him."

Avery understood.

"The ledger."

Elena nodded.

"Victor found it."

"Where?"

"He hid it somewhere Raymond couldn't access."

Luca looked at the brass key.

"Another lock."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Avery's bouquet, still somehow clutched in Avery's hand.

"The flowers."

Avery frowned.

Elena removed the ribbon.

Inside one hollow bouquet stem was a rolled strip of paper.

Coordinates.

Daniel checked his phone.

"That's Saint Matthew's Cemetery."

Avery knew immediately.

Her father's grave.

They arrived before dawn.

Edward's headstone stood beneath an old oak tree.

Avery found a small brass plate behind it.

The key opened it.

Inside was a waterproof tube.

The ledger.

And a phone.

The phone rang.

Daniel answered.

His father's voice said:

"Son?"

Daniel nearly collapsed.

"Dad?"

"Listen carefully. Raymond is coming."

Headlights appeared beyond the cemetery gates.

Several vehicles.

Luca looked at Avery.

"We need to go."

But Avery stared at the ledger.

Thirty-two years of lies had led to this book.

She wasn't running anymore.

Raymond's cars stopped.

Doors opened.

Men stepped out.

Then Raymond emerged.

Beside him was an older man with gray hair.

Victor Mercer.

His hands were bound.

Raymond smiled across Edward Bennett's grave.

"Give me the ledger."

Avery held it against her chest.

"No."

Raymond raised a gun toward Victor.

Daniel shouted.

Claire screamed.

Luca stepped in front of Avery.

Raymond smiled.

Then Avery noticed another person getting out of the final car.

A woman.

Claire stared at her.

"Mom?"

Avery turned.

Diane was no longer beside them.

May you like

She was standing beside Raymond.

And in her hand was a gun pointed directly at Luca.
