Chapter 4 - The Woman in the Photograph

"Avery."

The voice came again.

Female.

Not Diane.

Not Claire.

Luca turned on his phone flashlight.

The vault was empty except for them.

Daniel checked the door.

Locked.

Avery looked at the cassette player sitting inside the deposit box.

A tiny red light was glowing.

The voice had come from the tape.

Luca pressed play.

Static.

Then:

"Avery, if you're hearing this, I failed to come back for you."

Avery stopped breathing.

Elena.

Her biological mother.

"I need you to understand something. Edward Bennett saved us. Victor Mercer wanted control of the Moretti shipping network, and I discovered how he was moving money through our companies. Edward helped me collect evidence."

The tape crackled.

"Victor learned I had a daughter. You became leverage."

Avery covered her mouth.

"So I gave you to Edward and Diane. I thought it would be temporary."

The tape stopped.

Avery hit play.

Nothing.

Daniel examined it.

"Damaged."

Luca looked at the letter.

"The line about Edward."

Avery reread it.

Edward Bennett was not murdered.

The person responsible for his death is standing beside you.

Then she noticed something.

Different ink.

The first sentence matched Elena's handwriting from the envelope.

The second didn't.

"Someone altered this."

Luca nodded.

"To turn us against one another."

Daniel forced the vault door.

It opened.

Someone had engaged the lock from outside and then released it.

A message waited on Avery's phone.

MIDNIGHT.

OLD BENNETT HOUSE.

COME WITH THE KEY.

Avery knew the house.

Her father's abandoned childhood property outside the city.

At 11:52, they arrived.

Diane begged them not to enter.

Avery ignored her.

The brass key opened the front door.

Inside, dust covered everything except one path across the floor.

Fresh footprints.

They followed them to Edward's study.

Avery remembered sitting on his lap there as a child.

He had taught her chess at that desk.

A single lamp was burning.

On the desk sat a modern laptop.

The screen displayed:

WELCOME, AVERY.

Luca searched the room.

"No one."

Avery touched the keyboard.

A video began.

Edward Bennett appeared.

Alive.

Eleven years younger.

Avery's knees weakened.

"If you're seeing this, sweetheart, then somebody finally gave you Elena's key."

Avery cried silently.

"I wish I could tell you everything myself."

Edward looked exhausted.

"Victor Mercer isn't the only person you need to fear. Someone inside our family helped him."

Diane whispered, "Edward..."

The video continued.

"I discovered the betrayal too late."

A photograph appeared.

Diane.

Avery's heart broke.

But Edward continued.

"Diane made mistakes. She trusted Victor once. She regretted it for the rest of her life. She did not betray me."

Diane collapsed into a chair.

Avery stared at her.

Edward continued.

"The betrayal came from someone younger."

Claire whispered, "Who?"

A sound came from upstairs.

Footsteps.

Luca moved toward the stairs.

Avery followed.

At the top was her old childhood room.

The door stood open.

Inside, someone had arranged photographs across the bed.

Every photograph showed Avery.

School.

College.

Her first apartment.

Her job.

Someone had watched her for decades.

Avery found a recent photograph.

Taken three days ago.

She turned it over.

SAFE UNTIL THE WEDDING.

Luca looked toward the closet.

Movement.

He opened it.

Empty.

But the back wall had been cut away.

A narrow staircase descended.

They followed it.

At the bottom was a hidden room.

A woman sat in a chair facing away from them.

Avery stopped.

"Hello?"

The woman slowly stood.

Gray threaded through her dark hair.

She turned.

Avery recognized her instantly.

The woman from the photograph.

Elena Moretti.

Her biological mother.

Alive.

Avery couldn't move.

Elena looked at her daughter for the first time in thirty-two years.

Then she whispered:

"You brought Daniel."

Avery looked at him.

Elena's expression filled with terror.

"Get away from him."

Daniel raised his hands.

"I don't understand."

Elena backed toward the wall.

"His father didn't betray Edward."

Luca frowned.

"Then who did?"

Elena looked directly at Claire.

Avery followed her gaze.

Claire froze.

Elena whispered:

"Victor Mercer was protecting us from the Bennett who did."

Avery's phone vibrated.

One new video.

She opened it.

The footage showed the wedding ballroom earlier that night.

Someone slipping the brass key into Avery's bouquet.

Avery enlarged the face.

Her blood went cold.

It wasn't Diane.

It wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Claire.

May you like

It was the photographer.

And now he was standing directly behind Elena.
