Chapter 13 - The Third Man

The third man was Dr. Samuel Lee.

A retired biomedical engineer.

He had helped Daniel’s father establish the hidden trust and David’s evidence network.

He was still alive.

Daniel found him in Oregon.

Samuel was seventy-six and wanted nothing to do with Kang Meridian.

Until Daniel showed him Noah’s photograph.

Samuel invited them inside.

He told Daniel the final piece.

Daniel’s father had known Vale was corrupt years before his death.

But he lacked evidence.

David supplied it.

Samuel encrypted it.

Grace hid it.

Together they created a system designed to survive all of them.

“What evidence?” Daniel asked.

Samuel pointed toward Noah.

“The drawings.”

Everyone stared.

Samuel explained that the numbers Grace had occasionally hidden behind Noah’s pictures corresponded to fragments of a decryption sequence.

Noah’s wall had accidentally become the safest hiding place imaginable.

Nobody investigating Daniel’s room cared about children’s drawings.

Except Daniel.

They returned to St. Catherine’s.

The hospital had stored every picture.

Daniel arranged them by day.

Numbers appeared.

Samuel entered them.

A final archive opened.

Inside were contracts, recordings, and correspondence proving the entire conspiracy.

But there was something else.

A video from Daniel’s father.

Daniel watched.

His father looked tired.

“If you’re seeing this, I probably failed to tell you the things that mattered while I had time.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I taught you how to win. I should have taught you when winning doesn’t matter.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

His father continued.

“A company can be rebuilt. Money can return. Time cannot.”

Daniel lowered his head.

Noah took his hand.

The final evidence ensured every remaining conspirator was prosecuted.

No hidden mastermind remained.

No unexplained enemy waited.

The war was finally over.

That evening, Daniel returned to the question interrupted by Noah.

Emily stood in the hospital garden.

Noah waited nearby with Walter.

Daniel approached without his cane.

He lowered himself carefully onto one knee.

Emily immediately laughed.

“Can you get back up?”

“That is extremely insulting.”

“It’s medically relevant.”

Daniel opened the ring box.

“No speech this time.”

“Good.”

“Emily Miller, will you marry me?”

“Yes.”

Noah cheered.

Walter applauded.

Daniel stood.

Slowly.

Emily helped him the final inch.

Then kissed him.

Noah groaned.

“Too long.”

Daniel ignored him.

For once, the future felt uncomplicated.

Then Walter approached holding one last sealed envelope.

“I was supposed to give you this when everything was over.”

Daniel frowned.

“From whom?”

Walter looked toward Noah.

“David.”

Emily went still.

The envelope was addressed to her.

She opened it.

Read three lines.

Then covered her mouth.

Daniel touched her arm.

“What does it say?”

Emily looked up with tears streaming down her face.

“My husband knew someone would eventually find us.”

She turned the letter around.

At the bottom, David had written one final request.

And it concerned Daniel.
