Chapter 12 - Grace’s Last Secret

Grace didn’t deny buying the chemical.

She denied knowing what it was for.

Vale had ordered it through Kang Meridian’s laboratory division and used her credentials.

The records made her look guilty.

That had been intentional.

But Grace had kept something hidden.

A handwritten note from Daniel’s father.

If anything happens to me, Grace is innocent.

That note cleared the final shadow hanging over her.

Vale’s trial ended six weeks later.

The jury found him guilty on multiple counts.

The conspiracy that had shaped Daniel’s life was finally dismantled.

Daniel expected relief.

Instead, he felt empty.

Emily understood.

“You spent months fighting.”

“What happens when there’s nobody left to fight?”

“You live.”

Daniel looked at her.

“That sounds difficult.”

“It is.”

So he learned.

He returned to work three days a week.

He continued therapy.

He attended Noah’s baseball games.

He learned to cook one acceptable breakfast.

He visited his parents’ graves.

For the first time, he told his father he was angry.

Then he told him he understood.

On Day 180, Daniel walked half a mile.

Noah ran beside him.

“You’re slow.”

“I survived a coma.”

“That was months ago.”

“Children lack empathy.”

“You said excuses are expensive.”

Daniel regretted teaching him that phrase.

At home that evening, Emily found Daniel looking through the original drawings.

Day 1.

Wake up.

Day 12.

Someone visits.

Day 37.

Three hamburgers.

Day 89.

Standing beneath the sun.

Daniel stopped there.

“That one saved me.”

Emily smiled.

“The drawing?”

“The person who drew it.”

Emily sat beside him.

“And you saved him.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Noah already had you.”

“He needed more people who stayed.”

Daniel understood.

Staying.

That was the thing nobody from his old life had done.

He reached into his pocket.

Emily saw the small box.

Her eyes widened.

Daniel immediately said, “Noah designed the proposal.”

“That terrifies me.”

“It should.”

He opened the box.

“I had a speech.”

“What happened?”

“I forgot it.”

Emily laughed through tears.

Daniel looked at her.

“I know what disappearing feels like. I know what waking up alone feels like. And I know what it feels like when someone walks through the door and stays.”

Emily’s smile trembled.

“Emily Miller, will you—”

A crash came from upstairs.

They both jumped.

Noah shouted.

“DON’T FINISH WITHOUT ME!”

Emily burst out laughing.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“This was his plan.”

Noah thundered downstairs carrying something behind his back.

He stopped.

His smile vanished.

“Mom?”

Emily turned.

Noah was holding an old photograph.

He had found it inside Walter’s storage box.

Daniel took it.

The photograph showed David Miller.

Beside him stood Daniel’s father.

And between them was a third man Daniel had never seen before.

On the back, David had written:

IF BOTH OF US DIE, FIND HIM.
