Chapter 10 - The Woman Who Came Back

Lauren disappeared.

Police searched airports, hotels, and properties linked to Vale.

Nothing.

Daniel tried to focus on recovery.

But Lauren knew his habits.

His company.

His home.

And now she knew Emily and Noah mattered to him.

That made her dangerous.

Three days later, a package arrived.

Inside was Daniel’s old engagement ring.

And a flash drive.

Lauren appeared on the recording.

“I took Vale’s money.”

Daniel watched silently.

“But not to help him.”

Lauren explained that she had suspected Vale months before the crash.

She accepted the payment to make him believe she could be bought.

She collected evidence.

Then Marcus discovered what she was doing.

Everything spiraled.

Lauren had lied.

Betrayed Daniel.

Protected herself.

But she had also preserved the only complete ledger connecting Vale to the murders.

“Why escape?” Emily asked.

Daniel didn’t know.

The video answered.

“Because someone inside the prosecutor’s office works for Vale.”

Torres immediately opened an internal investigation.

Lauren provided a location.

She wanted immunity in exchange for the ledger.

Daniel refused to negotiate personally.

That surprised Emily.

“You don’t want answers?”

“I do.”

“Then why?”

“Because answers aren’t worth becoming who I used to be.”

He let the law handle it.

Lauren surrendered.

The ledger was genuine.

Vale’s case became overwhelming.

Lauren received no clean escape from responsibility, but prosecutors credited her cooperation.

For Daniel, that chapter ended without revenge.

He returned to therapy.

One morning he entered Room 307 for a follow-up appointment.

The room was empty.

The drawings had been preserved in a box.

Daniel stood in the doorway using only a cane.

Noah walked beside him.

“Day 110,” Noah announced.

He handed Daniel a new picture.

No cane.

Daniel smiled.

“You’re rushing me again.”

“No.”

Noah pointed.

The drawing showed Daniel standing at a wedding.

Beside Emily.

Daniel nearly dropped it.

“You need boundaries.”

Noah ran away laughing.

Emily arrived.

“What did he do?”

Daniel hid the picture.

“Nothing.”

She tried to grab it.

Daniel raised it over her head.

For a man recovering from spinal trauma, he moved surprisingly fast.

Emily finally saw it.

She became quiet.

Daniel did too.

Neither joked.

“I’m not asking,” he said.

“I know.”

“But someday.”

Emily looked at him.

“Someday sounds good.”

That night, Daniel received another call.

Not threatening.

Not anonymous.

The attorney handling his father’s estate had discovered a sealed instruction attached to the family trust.

It was addressed to Daniel.

The envelope had one condition.

It could only be opened after Daniel had survived an attempt on his life.

The next morning, Margaret brought it.

Daniel broke the seal.

Inside was a letter from his father.

And a second envelope addressed to someone else.

Daniel read the name.

NOAH MILLER.
