Chapter 7 - The House That Hid the Truth

The front door opened by itself.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody stood near it.

But it opened.

Slowly.

Like someone on the other side had been waiting for us to notice.

Dominic immediately moved in front of me.

Again.

Always.

Even after everything.

Even after the secrets.

Even after I questioned him.

His first instinct was still to protect me.

The security team raised their weapons.

But Dominic lifted his hand.

“Lower them.”

Everyone looked at him.

“Mr. Russo?”

“Lower them.”

His voice left no room for argument.

I stared at the open doorway.

The darkness beyond it felt familiar.

Not because I had seen it before.

Because some part of me had always known something was waiting there.

A missing piece.

A truth.

A wound that never healed.

Then a voice came from outside.

“Clara.”

My entire body froze.

My father.

Not through a phone.

Not through a recording.

In person.

I stepped forward.

Dominic grabbed my arm.

“Wait.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

His eyes were full of fear.

“Because I don’t know if this is a trap.”

I pulled my arm away.

“And I don’t know if I can keep standing here while everyone decides what I’m allowed to know.”

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But I didn’t take them back.

I walked toward the door.

The guards looked at Dominic.

He hesitated.

Only for a second.

Then he followed me.

Because even when I pushed him away, he refused to leave.

Outside stood my father.

Older.

Tired.

Different.

But alive.

The man who had disappeared from every photograph after my childhood.

The man who had been declared dead.

The man who had haunted my memories for years.

He looked at me.

And tears filled his eyes.

“Clara.”

I couldn’t move.

I wanted to hate him.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to ask why he left.

Why he let me believe he was gone.

Why he allowed me to grow up thinking I wasn’t worth staying for.

But when he looked at me, all I saw was the same face from my childhood.

The face I had searched for in every crowd.

“Why?”

It was the only word I could say.

My father lowered his head.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

I laughed.

A painful sound.

“Everyone says that.”

Dominic looked at him.

“This is not the place.”

My father’s eyes moved to Dominic.

And something changed.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Recognition.

“You still protect her.”

Dominic said nothing.

My father looked at me.

“He always did.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

My father stepped closer.

“Your mother trusted him.”

I looked at Dominic.

“And you?”

My father sighed.

“I didn’t.”

The words hit harder than expected.

“Why?”

“Because Dominic made a promise.”

My eyes moved between them.

“What promise?”

My father looked at Dominic.

The silence answered first.

Then Dominic spoke.

“I promised your mother I would protect you.”

My heart tightened.

“But you never told me.”

“I tried.”

“No.”

My voice became quiet.

“You protected me from the truth.”

Dominic looked away.

And I knew.

I was right.

My father reached into his coat.

Dominic immediately became tense.

But my father pulled out a small object.

A memory card.

My breath stopped.

Not because of the object itself.

Because I recognized it.

My mother had one exactly like it.

Years ago.

Before she disappeared.

“What is that?”

My father looked at me.

“The reason your mother died.”

Nobody spoke.

The words felt impossible.

“What’s on it?”

“Everything.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“Where did you get it?”

My father looked at him.

“She gave it to me.”

Dominic froze.

“When?”

“The night she disappeared.”

The room became silent.

I looked at Dominic.

His expression changed.

Because there was something he didn’t know.

My father continued.

“Your mother knew someone close to her was betraying her.”

“Who?”

He looked toward the house.

Toward the ballroom invitation still lying inside.

Toward the life we thought we understood.

“She didn’t know the name.”

“Then how did she know?”

“She found evidence.”

My father held the memory card tighter.

“She found payments.”

“Payments from who?”

His eyes moved toward Dominic.

Not accusing.

Warning.

“From someone inside Dominic’s world.”

I felt my chest tighten.

Again.

Everyone kept circling the same mystery.

Everyone knew pieces.

Nobody knew everything.

“Why didn’t you come back?”

My father looked at me.

The sadness in his eyes almost broke me.

“Because the people who wanted this information buried believed I was dead.”

“And you stayed away?”

“To keep them believing.”

I shook my head.

“You let me mourn you.”

“I know.”

“You let me think I wasn’t important enough.”

His face broke.

“I thought if you hated me, you would survive.”

The answer hurt.

Because it sounded like something Dominic would say.

Something someone says when they believe pain is better than danger.

I looked at both men.

Two people who claimed to love me.

Two people who made decisions for me.

Two people who forgot I was allowed to choose.

Then my father looked at Dominic.

“She knows about Victoria.”

Dominic’s face changed.

“What?”

My father nodded.

“She knows Victoria was involved.”

I turned.

“You knew?”

Dominic immediately answered.

“No.”

But my father interrupted.

“She was there that night.”

My stomach dropped.

“The night my mother disappeared?”

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

My phone vibrated.

Everyone looked.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A picture.

Victoria.

Standing in the same house.

Years younger.

Beside my mother.

Both of them looking at the camera.

Underneath the photo was a message.

YOUR MOTHER TRUSTED THE WRONG WOMAN.

I looked up.

“Dominic.”

He stepped closer.

I showed him.

His expression changed.

But this time, not from surprise.

From realization.

“She lied.”

“Who?”

He stared at the picture.

“Victoria.”

My father looked at him.

“You finally see it.”

Dominic ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Clara, you need to leave.”

The urgency in his voice scared me.

“Why?”

“Because if she knows you have this…”

He looked at the memory card in my father’s hand.

“She will come for it.”

As if his words summoned her, the lights outside the house suddenly went out.

All of them.

Every security light.

Every camera.

Everything.

The guards moved instantly.

Dominic grabbed my hand.

“Stay with me.”

A sound came from inside the house.

A door closing.

Slowly.

Everyone turned.

Because nobody was inside.

Nobody except—

The security monitor flickered back on.

A single camera appeared.

The hidden room.

The room where Dominic kept all the secrets.

A figure stood inside.

Looking directly into the camera.

Holding a folder.

My father stepped closer to the screen.

And whispered:

“No…”

I looked at him.

“Who is that?”

His face went pale.

Because the person standing inside the room was someone we all thought had disappeared five years ago.

May you like

And the folder in their hand had one word written across it:

CLARA.
