Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind the Locked Door

The message on Dominic’s phone stayed visible for only three seconds.

But those three seconds changed everything.

A photograph.

Our house.

Our living room.

Someone standing near the fireplace.

And behind him, a shadow I recognized.

A shadow that belonged to someone Dominic had spent months trying to keep away from me.

I looked at Dominic.

“Who is that?”

He did not answer immediately.

That scared me more than the picture itself.

Dominic Russo was not a man who hesitated.

Not in business meetings.

Not during negotiations.

Not when people tried to intimidate him.

I had seen him face powerful men without blinking.

But now, standing in the middle of a crowded ballroom surrounded by hundreds of people, he looked like a man fighting a memory he never wanted to see again.

“Clara,” he said quietly.

The way he said my name made my stomach tighten.

“Do you trust me?”

I almost laughed.

Because after everything that happened, that question felt impossible.

I had trusted him when he offered me protection.

I had trusted him when he told me the marriage contract was only business.

I had trusted him when he told me I was safe.

But lately, I had started wondering how much of my life I actually knew.

“I need you to answer me first,” I whispered.

His eyes stayed on mine.

“Who is in our house?”

Before he could respond, Victoria stepped closer.

“What happened?”

Dominic ignored her.

That alone told everyone in the room something was wrong.

Victoria was used to being the center of his attention.

Tonight, she was invisible.

Dominic turned to his security team.

“Lock down the hotel.”

The nearest guard immediately moved.

Victoria’s expression changed.

“Dominic, what are you doing?”

He looked at her.

“Leaving.”

The ballroom erupted with whispers.

The man everyone came to impress was walking away.

Not because of a business emergency.

Not because of a deal.

Because someone had threatened his wife.

My wife.

The words sounded strange in my own mind.

Even after eighteen months of marriage, there were moments when I still forgot I was actually that person.

The woman standing beside Dominic Russo.

His wife.

Dominic placed his hand gently against my back.

“Come with me.”

I followed him.

Not because I wasn’t afraid.

Because I was.

But because the look in his eyes told me something worse.

He was afraid too.

And Dominic Russo was almost never afraid.

The car ride home was silent.

Not peaceful.

Silent.

There was a difference.

I sat beside Dominic in the back seat while the city lights passed through the window.

Normally, he would hold my hand.

Tonight, his hands were folded together.

Tight.

Controlled.

Like he was preparing himself for something.

I looked at him.

“Tell me who it is.”

He stared forward.

“Clara.”

“No.”

My voice surprised even me.

“I am tired of being protected from the truth.”

That made him look at me.

For a moment, I saw the man behind the reputation.

Not the businessman.

Not the powerful figure everyone feared.

Just Dominic.

A man who loved someone and was terrified of losing her.

“There was someone before you knew me,” he said.

I waited.

“A man named Adrian Vale.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But Dominic’s expression told me it should.

“He worked with some of my companies years ago.”

“Worked with you?”

“Yes.”

“Then why does he matter?”

Dominic looked away.

“Because he was the reason I learned never to trust everyone who stands beside you.”

The car became quiet again.

I watched him.

“You thought he was dangerous.”

“I knew he was.”

“Then why is he in our house?”

Dominic did not answer.

And that was when I understood.

The picture was not just a threat.

It was a message.

Someone wanted Dominic to know they could reach us.

They wanted him to know they could enter the one place he believed was safe.

Our home.

When we arrived, security vehicles were already outside.

The house was surrounded.

Dominic immediately got out.

I followed.

“No.”

He stopped.

“Clara.”

“I’m coming with you.”

“This is exactly what I was trying to prevent.”

I stepped closer.

“You married me.”

His expression changed.

“You made me part of your life.”

I looked directly at him.

“So stop treating me like someone standing outside it.”

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Dominic nodded once.

“Stay behind me.”

It was not permission.

It was his compromise.

We entered the house.

Everything looked normal.

That was the terrifying part.

The lights were on.

The furniture was untouched.

The fireplace was still burning.

Nothing appeared wrong.

Until Dominic saw something on the table.

A photograph.

He picked it up.

His face changed.

I moved closer.

“What is it?”

He handed it to me.

My blood ran cold.

It was a picture of me.

Taken outside my mother’s care facility.

I was smiling.

Completely unaware.

On the back, someone had written three words.

WE WERE WATCHING.

I felt my hands become cold.

“Dominic…”

He took the picture away immediately.

His jaw tightened.

The security team searched every room.

Nothing.

No broken windows.

No forced doors.

No evidence of anyone entering.

Which meant only one thing.

Whoever did this had a key.

Or someone inside helped them.

Dominic walked toward the hallway.

I followed.

“Where are you going?”

“There is something I need to check.”

He stopped near a door at the end of the hallway.

A door I had never seen opened.

I frowned.

“That room is always locked.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dominic stared at it.

“Because some things should stay buried.”

The answer sent a chill through me.

“Dominic.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a key.

I had never seen it before.

“Why do you have a hidden room in our house?”

He did not respond.

The lock clicked.

The door opened slightly.

A cold draft moved through the hallway.

Inside was darkness.

Dominic stepped forward.

I grabbed his arm.

“Tell me what happened.”

He looked back at me.

And for the first time since I met him, I saw regret.

“I should have told you before.”

My heart sank.

“Before what?”

He looked into the dark room.

“Before you became the target.”

The lights inside flickered on.

The room was not empty.

There were files.

Boxes.

Old photographs.

Documents.

A wall covered with names.

My name was there.

I froze.

“Dominic…”

He walked inside slowly.

“I created this room after Adrian disappeared.”

“Why is my name on that wall?”

He did not answer.

I moved closer.

There were dates.

Locations.

Pictures.

Everything connected to my life.

Places I had been.

People I had met.

Even conversations I thought nobody knew about.

Someone had been watching me for a long time.

I turned toward Dominic.

“You knew?”

His silence was enough.

The pain came before the anger.

“You knew someone was tracking me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You were hiding it from me.”

“I was trying to find who was behind it.”

“And if you never found them?”

His expression broke slightly.

“Then I would make sure they never reached you.”

I wanted to believe him.

I did.

But there was something else.

Something he still wasn’t telling me.

On the wall, underneath my photograph, was another picture.

A woman.

Older.

Standing beside Dominic years ago.

I picked it up.

“Who is she?”

Dominic went completely still.

I looked at the picture.

Then at him.

“Dominic?”

His silence answered before his words did.

“That is Adrian’s sister.”

“Why do you have her picture?”

His eyes lowered.

“Because she disappeared the same night Adrian did.”

A noise came from downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Security reached for their weapons.

Dominic immediately moved in front of me.

Another sound.

A slow step.

Someone walking through the house.

But the security cameras showed nobody entering.

Dominic looked at the monitor.

The screen flickered.

Then one camera turned on by itself.

The hallway camera.

The one facing us.

A figure appeared.

Standing outside the locked room.

Dominic stared at the screen.

His face lost all color.

Because the person on the camera was holding something.

A document.

With Dominic’s signature.

And written across the top were four words:

"YOUR WIFE KNOWS NOTHING."

May you like

The figure slowly lifted his head toward the camera.

Then the house lights went out.
