Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Carried My Mother’s Secret

The door handle moved.
Slowly.
Everyone in the room saw it.
Nobody breathed.
Dominic immediately stepped in front of me.
His body became a shield.
The same way it always did.
But this time, I noticed something different.
His hand was not steady.
Dominic Russo was afraid.
Not for himself.
For me.
The handle stopped moving.
For a few seconds, nothing happened.
Then the door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
She looked older than the woman in the photograph.
But the resemblance was impossible to ignore.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same small scar near her eyebrow.
My mother had that scar.
I had spent years looking at old pictures trying to remember every detail of her face.
And now someone standing in front of me carried pieces of her.
The woman looked at me.
Not Dominic.
Me.
“Clara.”
Hearing my name from her mouth felt wrong.
Like hearing a song I thought I had forgotten.
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
But she didn’t move closer.
“I’m someone who should have found you years ago.”
Dominic’s voice was cold.
“Evelyn.”
The woman looked at him.
A strange sadness crossed her face.
“So you finally told her.”
Dominic didn’t answer.
My eyes moved between them.
“You know each other.”
Neither denied it.
That hurt.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
I laughed quietly.
“You both knew.”
The woman looked at me.
“Clara—”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I don’t want another explanation about why people lied to protect me.”
My voice became sharper.
“I want the truth.”
The room became silent.
The woman slowly nodded.
“You deserve that.”
She reached into her coat.
The guards immediately moved.
Dominic lifted his hand.
“Wait.”
The woman pulled out an old envelope.
The paper looked exactly like the one my father sent.
She handed it to me.
“This belonged to your mother.”
My fingers touched the envelope.
And I knew.
Before opening it.
I knew it would change something.
My mother’s handwriting was on the front.
For Clara.
I opened it.
Inside was one page.
Only a few lines.
My dear Clara,
If you are reading this, then the people who tried to erase the truth failed.
I stopped.
My vision blurred.
My mother.
The woman I thought I lost.
The woman who left me with unanswered questions.
She knew.
She knew something like this would happen.
I continued.
Do not hate the people who kept secrets from you.
Some secrets were created because someone wanted to hurt you.
Others were created because someone wanted you alive.
My eyes moved to Dominic.
I didn’t know which category he belonged to.
The next line made my heart stop.
Dominic Russo saved your life once.
But he was not the only one who made a promise to me.
I looked at him.
His expression changed.
“You knew about this letter.”
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I folded the paper.
“You knew.”
“Clara.”
“You knew my mother wrote this.”
“I knew she left something behind.”
“But you didn’t tell me.”
His eyes lowered.
“I didn’t know when to tell you.”
I stared at him.
“You don’t get to decide that.”
The words were quiet.
But they hurt more than shouting.
Dominic accepted them.
Because he knew he deserved them.
Evelyn watched us.
Then she spoke.
“He was trying to protect you.”
I turned.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Her expression softened.
“Because it’s true.”
I looked at her.
“Then why does it feel like everyone was protecting me from the truth instead of protecting me from danger?”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Evelyn sat down slowly.
“I knew your mother.”
“How?”
“She saved my life.”
The room became still.
“Your mother discovered something years ago.”
“The evidence?”
Evelyn nodded.
“She found a network of people who controlled businesses, politicians, and private organizations.”
My expression changed.
“People with power.”
“Yes.”
“And my father?”
Evelyn looked away.
“Your father tried to expose them.”
My hands tightened.
“But everyone told me he abandoned us.”
“That was the story they created.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“My father didn’t leave.”
“No.”
Evelyn looked at me.
“He ran.”
“From who?”
Her answer was immediate.
“From the people who killed your mother.”
The words hit like a physical blow.
I stopped breathing.
Dominic stepped forward.
“Evelyn.”
She looked at him.
“She needs to know.”
I looked at Dominic.
“Did my mother die because of this?”
His silence was painful.
Then he nodded.
“Partly.”
I closed my eyes.
All these years.
All the questions.
All the nights wondering why my family disappeared.
There had always been something bigger.
Something hidden.
I opened my eyes.
“Why me?”
Nobody responded.
I asked again.
“Why are they coming after me?”
Evelyn looked at the photograph she brought.
The childhood picture.
“Because your mother left something for you.”
“What?”
“A record.”
“Of what?”
“The truth.”
Dominic walked toward the desk.
“Where is it?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
“You came here because you know something.”
“I came here because someone found me first.”
That sentence changed the room.
Dominic immediately became alert.
“What do you mean?”
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“They knew I was coming.”
The lights flickered.
Everyone turned.
The security monitors changed.
One by one.
Every camera feed disappeared.
Then one screen turned back on.
A video began playing.
Static.
Then a man appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
My father.
My hand covered my mouth.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Clara.”
My heart broke hearing his voice.
“If you are watching this, then I failed.”
Dominic stepped closer.
The video continued.
“I tried to keep you away from the truth.”
My father looked down.
“But I was wrong.”
A pause.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“The person standing beside you is the reason your mother died.”
The room froze.
My eyes slowly moved toward Dominic.
He looked shocked.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just shocked.
The video continued.
“But he is also the reason you survived.”
I didn’t understand.
Nobody did.
My father looked terrified.
“There is one thing Dominic never told you.”
The screen flickered.
The image distorted.
Then my father whispered:
“He was there the night your mother disappeared.”
The video stopped.
Silence.
Dominic stared at the blank screen.
I stared at him.
Because suddenly, the question was no longer who was trying to hurt me.
The question was whether the man protecting me had been standing beside the person who destroyed my family.
Dominic opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Nobody moved.
Then his expression changed.
A voice came through the speaker.
A voice we all heard.
“Dominic.”
The voice paused.
“Tell Clara the truth.”
Dominic froze.
Because the person on the other end was someone who should never have been able to call.
Someone who had been declared dead five years ago.
May you like
And then the voice said:
“Tell her I was there when you buried her mother.”
