Chapter 9 - The Last Secret Vincent Had Kept

The man standing outside my apartment held the photograph with both hands.

He looked older than the man in my childhood memories.

His hair was gray.

His face carried years of exhaustion.

But there was no mistake.

I knew him.

Even after twelve years.

Even after every person told me he was gone.

“Dad?”

The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

The man’s eyes filled with tears.

“Emily.”

My knees almost gave out.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not Tyler.

Not Vincent.

Not my mother.

The world had spent twelve years telling me one story.

My father left.

My father disappeared.

My father was gone.

But he was standing in front of me.

Alive.

Breathing.

Looking at me like he had been waiting years to say my name.

I walked forward slowly.

Afraid that if I moved too quickly, he would disappear again.

“Is it really you?”

His face broke.

“Yes.”

I touched his arm.

Warm.

Real.

And then every emotion I had buried for twelve years came back at once.

Anger.

Pain.

Confusion.

Relief.

I stepped back.

“Why?”

My father looked down.

“Emily…”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to just come back.”

The room became silent.

“You don’t get to stand there and act like nothing happened.”

“I know.”

“You missed birthdays.”

His eyes lowered.

“You missed my graduation.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe you abandoned us.”

His face changed.

Like every word hurt.

“I never wanted you to believe that.”

“Then why did you let me?”

Nobody answered.

Not even my father.

That silence hurt.

Because after all these years…

I still didn’t have the one thing I wanted.

An explanation.

Vincent stepped forward.

“Richard.”

My father looked at him.

The two men stared at each other.

There was history there.

Years of secrets.

Years of decisions.

“You kept your promise,” my father said.

Vincent nodded.

“I tried.”

My father looked at me.

“I know.”

I turned toward Vincent.

“You knew?”

His expression changed.

“Not everything.”

“But you knew he was alive?”

“No.”

My father looked at the floor.

“I made sure nobody knew.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

He walked inside slowly.

The apartment door closed behind him.

“Because someone was trying to kill me.”

The words changed the atmosphere instantly.

My mother covered her mouth.

Tyler looked nervous.

“Who?”

My father looked directly at Tyler.

And Tyler froze.

“That’s the question I spent twelve years trying to answer.”

Tyler shook his head.

“You’re blaming me?”

“No.”

My father stepped closer.

“I’m blaming the person who used you.”

Tyler’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

My father looked at the journal.

“You were never the mastermind.”

The room went quiet.

Tyler laughed nervously.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

My father shook his head.

“You were just the person they sent to finish the job.”

My eyes moved between them.

“Who?”

My father didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at my mother.

“I’m sorry.”

My mother started crying.

And that scared me.

Because I knew what that meant.

“Mom?”

She shook her head.

“I didn’t know.”

My father nodded.

“I know.”

“Then who?”

My father reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Another envelope.

Another secret.

He placed it beside the journal.

“This contains the final proof.”

Vincent looked at it.

“What proof?”

“The person who ordered everything.”

My heart started beating faster.

My father looked at me.

“Emily, before you open this, you need to understand something.”

“What?”

“Not everyone who hurt you wanted to destroy you.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means some people made terrible choices because they were afraid.”

I looked at my mother.

Then Vincent.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an excuse.

But I was tired of excuses.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a contract.

A name.

A signature.

I read the first line.

Then my hands went cold.

Because the person behind everything was not Tyler.

Not Tyler’s father.

Not a stranger.

It was someone whose name had been in my life since childhood.

Someone who sat at my family table.

Someone who knew every secret.

I looked up.

“Dad…”

His eyes filled with regret.

“I know.”

Tyler moved closer.

“Who is it?”

Nobody answered.

Because my phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

A photo appeared.

It showed the person who signed the contract.

Standing beside my father.

The date was one day before he disappeared.

My breathing stopped.

Because the person in the photo was not just someone I knew.

It was someone standing in the room with me.

I slowly lifted my eyes.

Everyone followed my gaze.

My mother whispered:

“No…”

The apartment became silent.

My father looked terrified.

Vincent reached for the envelope.

Too late.

The door behind us opened.

And the person from the photograph stepped inside.
