Chapter 10 - The Man Behind the Betrayal

The door opened wider.
Nobody moved.
The man standing there did not look like someone who had been hiding for years.
He looked calm.
Too calm.
He wore a dark suit without a tie, his gray hair perfectly arranged, his expression unreadable.
But I knew that face.
Not because I had met him recently.
Because I had seen him in the photograph.
The photograph that had destroyed everything I believed.
My hand tightened around Vincent’s arm.
“Who is he?” I whispered.
Nobody answered.
My father looked like all the blood had left his body.
My mother covered her mouth.
And Vincent…
Vincent did something I had never seen him do before.
He stepped back.
Not from fear.
From recognition.
The man walked into the apartment slowly and closed the door behind him.
“Emily,” he said.
Hearing my name from his mouth made my stomach turn.
I had never met him.
But he spoke as if he had known me my entire life.
“Don’t look at them,” he continued. “They have been lying to you for years.”
My father finally found his voice.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
The man smiled slightly.
“That’s exactly what you said the night you signed the agreement.”
Silence.
A terrible silence.
My eyes moved between them.
“What agreement?”
Nobody answered.
I looked at Vincent.
He looked at the envelope in his hand.
The same envelope he had almost opened.
The one my father had tried to stop him from seeing.
“What is happening?” I asked.
My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.
The man looked at me.
“Your father didn’t disappear because he was taken.”
My breathing stopped.
“He disappeared because he ran.”
My father stood up.
“Enough.”
The man ignored him.
“He ran after he realized the truth about Tyler Hart.”
The name hit me like a physical blow.
Tyler.
The man who had humiliated me.
The man who had publicly destroyed my confidence.
The man who had almost taken my home.
I felt Vincent’s hand slowly close into a fist.
“You know Tyler?” I asked.
The stranger looked at me.
“I knew him before you did.”
My mother whispered:
“No, please…”
The man turned toward her.
“You knew this day would come.”
My mother looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Because I realized something.
She knew.
My own mother knew there was a secret.
For years.
I felt my chest tighten.
“Mom?”
She closed her eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“Protect me from what?”
She couldn’t answer.
The man stepped closer.
“From the people who made your life a lie.”
Vincent finally spoke.
“Give me the contract.”
The man looked at him.
“So you still don’t know everything.”
Vincent’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?”
The man reached inside his jacket.
Everyone tensed.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a small folder.
Old.
Worn.
The edges were damaged.
He placed it on the table.
“I kept the original.”
My father stared at it.
“No.”
The man looked at him.
“Yes.”
My fingers trembled.
“What is that?”
The man opened the folder.
Inside was a document.
A contract.
The same type of contract connected to the photograph.
But this one had something different.
A name.
A name that made the room freeze.
Tyler Hart.
My stomach dropped.
“He wasn’t just your ex,” the man said.
“He was assigned to you.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
The man continued.
“Tyler didn’t find you by accident.”
My memories started replaying.
The first time Tyler walked into the bakery where I worked.
The way he seemed interested immediately.
The way he knew details about my life.
The way he always asked about my mother’s house.
I thought those things were love.
I thought I was lucky.
But suddenly…
They looked like preparation.
“He was watching you,” the man said.
“For what?”
The man looked at my father.
“Because of what your father owned.”
My father’s face changed.
“I didn’t own anything.”
The man laughed quietly.
“That’s what you told her?”
Vincent grabbed the contract.
His eyes moved quickly across the pages.
Then his expression hardened.
“What is this?”
The man answered.
“The company shares.”
I blinked.
“What company shares?”
My father looked down.
And that was when I knew.
He had been hiding something bigger.
The man pointed at the contract.
“Your father built a company years ago. Before he disappeared. A company worth hundreds of millions.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I would know.”
The man looked at me.
“That was the point.”
The room felt like it was shrinking.
My entire life.
My struggles.
Working double shifts.
Worrying about rent.
Watching my mother count medication money.
All of it.
A lie.
My father stepped forward.
“Emily, listen to me.”
I turned toward him.
For the first time in my life…
I didn’t see my father.
I saw a stranger.
“You knew?”
He said nothing.
That was the answer.
My eyes filled with tears.
“Did you know Tyler was using me?”
His silence became unbearable.
Vincent moved between us.
“Answer her.”
My father looked at Vincent.
“You don’t understand.”
Vincent’s voice was cold.
“Then explain.”
My father collapsed into the chair.
“I was trying to keep her alive.”
The sentence confused me.
“Alive?”
The man standing by the door spoke.
“Because people were willing to destroy anyone who had access to those shares.”
My heart raced.
“Who?”
Nobody answered.
Then the man looked at Vincent.
“Ask him.”
Vincent stared.
“Ask who?”
The man pointed at my father.
“Ask him why he hired someone to follow Emily.”
The apartment went silent again.
I looked at my father.
“What?”
My father’s face changed.
“Emily…”
“No.”
I stepped back.
“Did you?”
He looked away.
That was enough.
My voice cracked.
“You had someone watching me?”
“I was protecting you.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You were controlling me.”
My mother started crying.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“When?”
She couldn’t answer.
The stranger walked toward the table.
“There is more.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course there is.”
He placed another photograph beside the contract.
This one was newer.
My hands went cold.
Because it showed Tyler.
Standing beside someone else.
Someone powerful.
Someone I recognized.
Vincent leaned closer.
His expression changed immediately.
“Impossible.”
I looked at him.
“Who is that?”
Vincent didn’t answer.
The stranger did.
“That is the person who funded Tyler’s entire plan.”
I stared at the photograph.
“Who?”
The man slowly turned it around.
A handwritten note was on the back.
Three words.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew the handwriting.
I had seen it every day growing up.
My father’s handwriting.
The message said:
“Trust nobody.”
I looked at my father.
He looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
Then Vincent’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“Who is it?” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
Because the number displayed on his phone was impossible.
A number that belonged to someone who had been gone for years.
Vincent slowly answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then his eyes lifted toward me.
“Emily…”
I felt my entire body go cold.
“What?”
He lowered the phone.
“The person calling me…”
He swallowed.
“…said they are your real father.”
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because my father was standing right in front of me.
And before anyone could speak again, the lights inside the apartment suddenly went out.
