Chapter 5 - The Truth Behind Tyler’s Perfect Smile

The whisper came from inside the hidden room.

“Emily…”

I froze.

Not because I was afraid of the voice.

Because I knew it.

Somewhere deep in my memory.

A voice from old photographs.

A voice from childhood.

A voice I thought I would never hear again.

“Dad?”

The word escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

My mother grabbed my arm.

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“Emily, don’t.”

But I was already moving.

The storage door stood half-open.

The room behind it was dark.

Dust covered everything.

Old boxes.

Broken furniture.

Things we had forgotten existed.

But someone had been inside.

Recently.

There were fresh footprints on the floor.

My phone flashlight moved across the room.

Then stopped.

A chair.

A small desk.

A computer.

Someone had built a hidden workspace behind the wall of our apartment.

A place where someone had been watching.

Recording.

Waiting.

My mother stood behind me.

She looked at the room like it was a nightmare returning.

“I told your father to destroy this.”

I turned around.

“What?”

She looked down.

“This room was where he kept everything.”

“Everything?”

“The evidence.”

I stepped inside.

On the desk were dozens of folders.

Old photographs.

Documents.

Hard drives.

My hands moved toward the nearest folder.

The name on it made my chest tighten.

TYLER HART.

I opened it.

Inside were pictures.

Tyler as a teenager.

Tyler with his father.

Tyler entering the same office building where my father used to work.

Then I found a document.

A contract.

My name was on it.

But the signature was wrong.

My stomach turned.

“This is the document.”

My mother looked away.

The fake transfer agreement.

The one Tyler used to steal control over my father’s property.

I kept looking.

There were more papers underneath.

Payments.

Bank transfers.

Messages.

And one number repeated over and over.

$240,000.

I felt sick.

“He planned everything.”

My mother nodded.

“Your father found out years ago.”

“About Tyler?”

“About Tyler’s family.”

I looked at her.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?”

She sat down on the old chair.

“Because he was trying to protect you.”

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept saying that.

Protect you.

Protect you.

Protect you.

But nobody ever asked if I wanted to know the truth.

“My father disappeared because of this?”

My mother was silent.

That was enough.

I picked up another folder.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The handwriting was my father’s.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then something happened before I could explain everything myself.

Trust carefully.

The people closest to you may not be the people protecting you.

My hands shook.

I continued reading.

Vincent knows the truth.

He promised me he would keep you safe.

But there is one thing I never told him.

I never told anyone.

The person who betrayed me was not Tyler’s father.

It was someone inside our family.

I stopped.

Someone inside our family.

I looked at my mother.

She looked away.

“Mom.”

She didn’t answer.

“Who?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.”

I stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I saw the signs. I knew someone was helping them. But your father never told me who.”

“Why?”

“Because he was afraid I would confront them.”

“And?”

“And they would know he had hidden the evidence.”

I looked back at the letter.

My father had known.

He knew someone close to us was involved.

But he never told us who.

A sound came from behind us.

A phone ringing.

Not mine.

Not my mother’s.

The old desk phone.

The one connected to nothing.

We both looked at it.

It rang again.

My mother stepped backward.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“You know who that is.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

But her face said yes.

The phone continued ringing.

Finally, I picked it up.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then breathing.

The same breathing from the private call.

“Emily.”

My heart stopped.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then:

“Your father wanted me to call you when you found the room.”

I held my breath.

“Where is my father?”

The person on the other end didn’t answer.

Instead, they asked:

“Do you still trust your mother?”

I looked at her.

She looked terrified.

“Who are you?”

The line went silent.

Then a voice whispered:

“The person who watched Tyler destroy your life.”

The call ended.

I lowered the phone.

My mother walked toward me.

“Emily…”

I stepped away.

“Is there anything else you haven’t told me?”

Her face broke.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

That sentence changed everything.

Not safe.

Not happy.

Alive.

“What does that mean?”

Before she could answer, my phone buzzed.

A new message.

This time, from Vincent.

I opened it.

There was a picture.

A security camera image.

Taken outside our apartment building.

My blood turned cold.

The image showed Tyler standing in the lobby.

Looking directly at the camera.

Below the picture was one sentence.

"He knows you found the room."

I looked at my mother.

“He’s here.”

She nodded.

“He was always going to come.”

The lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the apartment went dark.

A loud sound came from downstairs.

The building entrance door closing.

My mother grabbed my hand.

“Emily, we need to leave.”

I looked at the hidden room.

At my father’s documents.

At the evidence that could finally explain everything.

“No.”

I picked up the folder.

“I’m done running.”

Then I heard footsteps.

Coming up the stairs.

Slow.

Calm.

Confident.

Someone who wasn’t afraid of being found.

My phone buzzed one final time.

A message from Vincent.

Only three words.

"Don’t open the door."

The footsteps stopped outside our apartment.

The handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

May you like

Then the door opened.

And Tyler Hart walked in holding my father’s missing journal.
