Chapter 2 - The Brother Who Was Waiting

Julian Vale locked the hospital room door behind him.
The sound was quiet.
Too quiet.
But somehow, it was louder than the heartbeat monitor beside Adrian’s bed.
I stared at him.
The man standing in front of me was the same person who had held my hand at Adrian’s funeral planning meeting.
The same person who had told me, "You need to accept reality, Emma."
The same person who had looked into my eyes and said my husband was never coming back.
But now I saw something different.
He wasn't shocked.
He wasn't confused.
He wasn't afraid.
He looked like someone who had just walked into a room exactly when he expected to.
Adrian noticed it too.
His grip tightened around my hand.
"Julian..." he whispered.
His voice was weak.
But the fear in his eyes was stronger than his exhaustion.
Julian slowly walked closer.
"Brother."
He smiled.
A smile that didn't reach his eyes.
"I can't believe this."
I moved between them without thinking.
"What are you doing here?"
Julian looked at me.
For a second, his expression changed.
Not sadness.
Not anger.
Something colder.
"Emma, you should step away from the bed."
I didn't move.
"Why?"
His eyes moved toward Adrian.
"Because Adrian has just woken up after nine months. He doesn't understand what's happening."
Adrian let out a small breath.
"I understand enough."
Julian stopped.
The room became completely silent.
Adrian looked at his brother.
"I heard everything."
The color slowly disappeared from Julian's face.
Just for a moment.
But I saw it.
And Adrian saw it too.
"You heard what?" Julian asked carefully.
Adrian tried to sit up, but pain crossed his face.
I immediately helped him.
"Don't move."
His eyes never left Julian.
"The conversations."
Julian said nothing.
"The arguments."
Adrian swallowed.
"The plans."
My heart started racing.
Plans?
What plans?
Julian stepped closer.
"Adrian, you're confused."
"No."
Adrian's voice was weak.
But certain.
"I was trapped inside my own body. I couldn't open my eyes. I couldn't speak. I couldn't move."
His fingers held mine tighter.
"But I heard voices."
I looked at him.
A chill moved through me.
Nine months.
Nine months of silence.
Nine months where everyone believed he was gone.
But he had been there.
Listening.
Watching.
Remembering.
"I heard doctors talking," Adrian continued.
"I heard nurses coming into the room."
His eyes darkened.
"And I heard the person who came here every week to make sure I never woke up."
Julian didn't respond.
That was the answer.
I felt my stomach drop.
"Julian..."
I whispered his name.
He looked at me.
"Don't do this, Emma."
"Do what?"
"Believe him."
His voice became softer.
Almost gentle.
"You have been under incredible stress. Nine months beside this bed. Anyone would start imagining things."
I stared at him.
The worst part was that he sounded believable.
That was what made him dangerous.
Julian had always been the calmer brother.
The reasonable one.
The one people trusted.
While Adrian was intense and direct, Julian knew how to smile.
How to listen.
How to make people feel safe.
But now I saw the truth.
The safest person in the room was the one who had been unconscious.
Adrian looked at me.
"Emma."
I turned toward him.
"Remember the day before the accident?"
I nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"What did I tell you?"
I searched my memory.
The day before everything changed.
The last normal day of my life.
Adrian had been sitting in his office, staring at documents.
He looked tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
I had asked him what was wrong.
He had smiled and told me nothing.
But before I left, he grabbed my hand.
And he said something strange.
"Promise me something."
"What?"
"If anything happens to me, don't trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you."
I had laughed.
I thought he was being dramatic.
I thought he was talking about business.
I thought billionaires always worried about enemies.
But now...
I looked at Julian.
And suddenly I remembered.
Julian was the first person who arrived at the accident scene.
Julian was the one who handled Adrian's company while he was unconscious.
Julian was the one who brought me legal documents to sign.
Julian was the one who told me Adrian would never know I existed.
A cold wave passed through me.
"You knew."
Julian looked at me.
"What?"
"You knew Adrian might wake up."
His face remained calm.
But his silence answered.
Adrian closed his eyes.
"I knew it."
Julian sighed.
A tired expression appeared on his face.
"Adrian, you always had a talent for making things complicated."
I felt my body go still.
That wasn't the voice of a worried brother.
That was the voice of someone who had been caught.
"What did you do?" I asked.
Julian looked at me.
Then at Adrian.
"Do you really want to know?"
Adrian stared at him.
"Yes."
Julian walked to the window.
The city lights reflected across the glass.
"You think this is about money."
Nobody answered.
"You think I wanted your company."
He laughed quietly.
"You never understood."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Then explain."
Julian turned around.
"For thirty years, I lived as Adrian Vale's little brother."
His voice became bitter.
"You got everything."
"The attention."
"The respect."
"The opportunities."
"And I got to stand behind you."
Adrian looked disappointed.
Not angry.
That made it worse.
"Julian..."
"Don't."
Julian raised his hand.
"Don't pretend you cared."
A silence followed.
Then Julian looked at me.
"And you."
I froze.
"What about me?"
"You were never supposed to be part of this."
My heartbeat slowed.
"What does that mean?"
Julian smiled faintly.
"Adrian wasn't supposed to marry you."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"What are you talking about?"
Julian reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
My blood went cold.
Because I recognized it.
It was the same type of envelope I had found hidden in Adrian's office.
The one containing the warning.
Julian placed it on the table.
"You want the truth?"
Adrian stared at it.
"Open it."
I looked at Adrian.
He looked confused.
"What is that?"
Julian answered quietly.
"The reason your wife was never supposed to survive this family."
I felt my breath disappear.
"What?"
Julian looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something close to fear in his eyes.
Not because he was afraid of Adrian.
Because he was afraid of what was inside that envelope.
Adrian reached toward it.
But before his fingers touched the paper, the hospital monitor suddenly began beeping rapidly.
The door handle moved.
Someone was trying to enter.
Julian looked at the locked door.
His expression changed instantly.
"He's here."
Adrian looked at him.
"Who?"
Julian didn't answer.
The door shook again.
Harder.
Then a familiar voice came from the other side.
"Open the door, Julian."
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It belonged to the person who had cried beside Adrian's hospital bed every day.
The person everyone believed was helping us.
Adrian looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
"Emma... why is my mother here?"
