Chapter 6 - The Family That Needed Mariana Gone

Mariana screamed Lucas's name.
She ran.
Down the attic stairs.
Through the corridor.
Past the stunned officers.
Into the kitchen.
Empty.
A dinosaur-shaped cookie sat on the table.
Lucas's blue jacket was gone.
Adrian reached her.
"Where is he?"
Mariana shoved the phone at him.
His face transformed.
Not shock.
Rage.
"Lock the property."
Police moved immediately.
Security footage showed Lucas leaving the kitchen with a woman in a housekeeper's uniform.
The woman wasn't staff.
She wore a hat.
Her face was partly hidden.
But the vehicle waiting outside belonged to Celeste's personal assistant.
Adrian stared at the screen.
"My mother wouldn't hurt him."
Mariana turned on him.
"You don't get to tell me what your mother wouldn't do."
He absorbed it.
"You're right."
Police traced the vehicle.
Abandoned.
Mariana's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Lucas?"
Celeste spoke.
"He's safe."
Mariana's knees weakened.
"Let me hear him."
"Mariana—"
"LET ME HEAR MY SON."
A pause.
Then Lucas.
"Mom?"
She covered her mouth.
"I'm here, baby."
"Grandma says you're coming."
Grandma.
The word almost destroyed her.
"Yes."
"Are you mad?"
"No."
"She gave me juice."
Mariana forced herself to breathe.
"Listen to me. Stay calm. Mommy is coming."
Celeste returned.
"Alone."
"No."
"Then I leave the country with him."
"You won't make it to an airport."
"You underestimate what money can arrange."
Mariana looked at police.
They were tracing.
"Where?"
Celeste gave an address.
An old Blackwood property outside the city.
Then hung up.
Police prepared a tactical response.
Mariana insisted on going.
They refused.
Adrian argued with them.
Rachel argued harder.
Eventually, Mariana was allowed near the property but not inside.
She hated every second.
The old estate had been empty for years.
Police surrounded it.
Mariana received another call.
"Come to the front door."
She moved.
An officer stopped her.
Then Lucas appeared at an upstairs window.
"Mom!"
Mariana's heart shattered.
She stepped forward.
Celeste appeared behind him.
Not touching him.
Not threatening him.
Just standing there.
"Mariana," she called through the open window. "I need to speak to you."
"Let him go."
"I will."
"Now."
"I need you to understand."
"I don't care."
"You will."
Celeste disappeared from the window.
Minutes later, the front door opened.
Lucas ran out.
Mariana broke past the officer.
She caught him.
Held him.
Checked his face.
His arms.
His breathing.
"I'm okay, Mom."
She sobbed into his hair.
Adrian approached slowly.
Lucas saw him.
"Uncle Adrian?"
Adrian stopped.
The word hit him visibly.
"Yeah."
Lucas smiled.
"Grandma said you're my uncle."
Mariana looked toward the house.
Celeste stepped outside with both hands visible.
Police surrounded her.
She wasn't running.
She had never planned to.
She wanted an audience.
Celeste looked at Mariana.
"I wasn't going to take him."
"You kidnapped my son."
"I needed you to come."
"You could have called."
"You wouldn't have listened."
"You're right."
Celeste's face crumpled.
For the first time, Mariana saw the woman beneath the armor.
It didn't erase anything.
But she saw her.
"I loved Daniel," Celeste whispered.
Adrian's voice came from behind Mariana.
"No. You loved controlling him."
Celeste looked at her eldest son.
"I thought I was protecting this family."
"You destroyed it."
"I made mistakes."
Mariana laughed bitterly.
"Mistakes?"
Celeste looked at Lucas.
Mariana moved between them.
"No."
Celeste stopped.
"Don't look at him like he's your absolution."
Tears filled Celeste's eyes.
Mariana continued.
"He isn't here to make you feel better."
Police approached with handcuffs.
Celeste didn't resist.
Before they took her, she looked at Mariana.
"There's something you still don't know."
Mariana almost refused.
Then Celeste said, "Daniel changed his will."
Adrian frowned.
"When?"
"After the accident."
"How?"
"He had a lawyer come to Switzerland."
Rachel stepped forward.
"Which lawyer?"
Celeste gave a name.
"Why wasn't the new will filed?"
"I paid him."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Of course.
"What did the new will say?"
Celeste looked at Mariana.
"Everything went to the child."
Mariana stared.
"Everything?"
"His shares. His trusts. His property."
Adrian whispered, "That would include twelve percent of Blackwood Industries."
Celeste nodded.
Lucas didn't just have an inheritance.
He had ownership.
Mariana almost laughed at the absurdity.
Her son still slept with a stuffed dinosaur missing one eye.
Now adults were discussing corporate shares.
Celeste was taken away.
The investigation exploded.
Thomas Reed entered a cooperation agreement.
Evelyn Price surrendered.
The private maternity investigator identified Celeste as the person who hired her.
Daniel's recording authenticated.
Mariana's conviction was sent for emergency review.
Three weeks later, she entered the same courthouse where she'd once been sentenced.
This time Adrian sat behind her.
Lucas sat beside Rachel.
The prosecutor stood.
"Your Honor, in light of newly discovered evidence demonstrating that Ms. Vega was deliberately framed, the state joins the defense motion to vacate the conviction."
Mariana stopped breathing.
The judge looked at her.
"Ms. Vega, the conviction is vacated."
Tears blurred everything.
"Furthermore, the indictment is dismissed with prejudice."
Done.
One minute.
That was how long it took to erase a legal judgment that had consumed years of her life.
Outside, reporters shouted.
Mariana ignored them.
Lucas ran into her arms.
"Does this mean you're not a bad guy anymore?"
She laughed through tears.
"I was never a bad guy."
"I know."
That mattered more than the judge.
Adrian stood nearby.
He didn't intrude.
Mariana noticed.
She walked toward him.
"Thank you."
"You did this."
"No."
"Daniel did."
She looked down.
Maybe.
Daniel had left the truth behind.
But Mariana had survived long enough to find it.
The civil case followed.
Her wrongful conviction settlement would take time.
Daniel's estate litigation would take longer.
Celeste faced charges involving obstruction, witness tampering, fraud, and kidnapping.
Thomas faced financial and criminal charges.
Evelyn cooperated for reduced sentencing.
For the first time, the powerful people who had treated Mariana's life as expendable were forced to answer questions.
Then Rachel discovered one final problem.
Daniel's revised will.
The attorney Celeste had bribed claimed it had been destroyed.
Without the original, Lucas's inheritance could become a years-long court battle.
Adrian offered to settle immediately.
Mariana refused.
"Why?"
"Because if Daniel wrote something for his son, I want his son to have what Daniel intended. Not what you generously decide."
Adrian nodded.
"Fair."
They searched.
The Swiss facility.
Daniel's medical files.
Attorney archives.
Nothing.
Until Mariana remembered the metal box.
The baby sock.
The recorder.
The letter.
Daniel had hidden important things.
Maybe he'd hidden more.
She returned to the attic.
Alone this time.
She sat where Adrian and Daniel had once hidden during storms.
"Where would you put it?" she whispered.
Her eyes moved over the beams.
The trunks.
The old childhood furniture.
Then she noticed scratches beneath a small wooden desk.
Four letters.
D.B.
Daniel Blackwood.
She crawled underneath.
There was a narrow panel.
She pressed it.
Nothing.
Then harder.
Click.
A compartment opened.
Inside was a sealed legal envelope.
Mariana's hands shook.
She pulled it out.
ORIGINAL LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF DANIEL JAMES BLACKWOOD.
She laughed.
Then cried.
Then held it against her chest.
But another envelope remained inside.
This one wasn't addressed to Mariana.
It was addressed to Lucas.
Mariana opened the compartment wider.
A small note was attached.
TO BE GIVEN TO MY CHILD ON HIS FIFTH BIRTHDAY.
Lucas had turned five three months earlier.
Mariana stared at the envelope.
Then she noticed something else beneath it.
A second document.
A guardianship declaration.
She read the first paragraph.
Her heart stopped.
Daniel had named someone to protect his child if Mariana could not.
The name wasn't Adrian.
It was someone Mariana knew.
May you like
Someone who had disappeared five years ago.
And according to the document, that person had known Lucas existed all along.
